Whoops! Almost forgot to update here two weekends in a row! I gave myself a pass last weekend considering we'd spent the entire time in Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands. All told I think we hit about a dozen or so bands and walked about thirteen miles, and then took Monday off to rest and recuperate. It was fun, but it was EXHAUSTING. And, as I'd said last week on my music blog, I think we're calling it done with music festivals for now. We still enjoyed OL, but we felt it's kind of at the point where it's kind of huge now -- not yet Coachella-sized, thankfully, and I don't think our neighborhoods would want that -- and it's just getting too tiring and maybe even irritating.

In other news: I have now made Novel Projects A, B and C public! Per my WtBT post from the other day:

The one I’ve been referring to as Project A is currently entitled Queen Ophelia. It’s a story about a man who, upon his father’s death, finds that his estranged mother is not the human he was told she’d been: she is in fact a part-demon part-fae queen of a world filled with magic and war. He learns that he has not only inherited her magical blood but must help her defeat an unexpected enemy. During his adventures and travels, he learns more about the demon and fae world than he’d ever expected. This one’s theme is all about finding comfort and acceptance in others, and accepting oneself. This one was inspired by a dream I’d had in May, wrote out the entire outline that next morning, and have been writing on the 750 Words site since September. [Surprisingly, this one does not have a playlist. I may need to rectify that.]

Project B, meanwhile, is currently entitled Theadia, and it’s a story that popped into my head during my last days at the Former Day Job. It’s about two young women coders living on a space waystation who become embroiled in a border war, useless upper management and terrible engineering. As I’d said yesterday on my Twitter feed: “the source of conflict isn’t just an antagonistic world threat. It also includes the conflict of active avoidance: the ‘not my job’, the ‘it has to be this way because reasons’ and ‘it’s too expensive to make better’. [The main characters] refuse to fall into that avoidance trap. Winning because they stepped up, not because they’re superpowered or invincible.” It’s super geeky fun and doesn’t take itself entirely seriously, but it’s right up there with IMBW as one of the most enjoyable stories I’ve written. Oh, and this is the one that features the Maine coon cat, Grizelda!

[There is indeed a Project C, and it’s what I’ve been referring to as MU4, aka the fourth book in the Mendaihu Universe. I’m taking my own sweet time with this one because there’s a ton to do. Suffice it to say, the story takes place in Bridgetown seventy years after the trilogy, and focuses on how belief systems change and evolve, for better or for worse, and how different they become the further they get from their creators’ original plans and intentions. And yes, a few Trilogy characters do show up!]

[Huh. Had no idea I could insert different fonts here. Cool!]

Anyway...other than that, things are flowing normally, not much to report. Keeping busy is all.

Hope everyone has a lovely week!

Huh. Who knew that a) putting attainable plans into action and b) finding that sweet-spot level of productivity that c) isn't just me trying too hard and overworking myself and d) keeps me just enough from distraction would actually, y'know, work? Heh.

It's been a surprisingly productive week here in Spare Oom. I got more submission work completed (including a complete query/synopsis package for In My Blue World and a few submission emails), finished off the synopsis for Waystation Project, made a to-do short story list for College Campus Project, continued rereading and synopsis for MU4 Project, and somehow decided that maybe playing out a synopsis for In My Blue World Sequel Project wouldn't be a bad idea either. Oh, and maybe Best Laid Plans for Oh Hey Remember That One Project I Keep Untrunking Well Maybe It Still Needs A Crapton More Work So I'll Put That One Aside So Forget I Said Anything Project has been put aside.

So in short, I put aside the Ooh Shiny Best Laid Plans Project that should maybe stay trunked (and locked, let's be honest) but opened up a Pandora's Box of SO MANY OTHER PROJECTS in its place. And I don't actually mind this, as this is the level I want and need to be at, where I'm most comfortable creatively. (Side note, I still have that other synopsis I wrote a few weeks back of a completely new story based on a dream I'd had, so we'll add that to the list.)

ANYWAY. Other than that, I've also been busy elsewhere as well. I've been doing a bit of drawing in the afternoons and picking up my guitar to play along to a few songs at least once a day. I've been good with my daily stretches. And I've been keeping up with the blogs. Keeping super busy but a GOOD kind of busy!

My schedule may be a bit wonky starting next Sunday, however, as A is on vacation and we'll be traveling for a few days (for the first time in over a year), but I'm sure I'll continue to keep myself busy and up to date. We'll see where this all leads us...!

SO! Things have been happening. This past Thursday and Friday I had two interviews with A's company (different department so no issues here to worry about). I think they went reasonably well, considering that I'm always terrible at job interviews. I blather and sometimes lose my train of thought, especially if there's a multi-tiered question given to me. It has nothing to do with my work ethic and processes in general, I'm just not always good at riffing when I don't know the question beforehand, and no amount of preparation or practice will help me. It's just how my Thinking Versus Speaking Brain works. So hopefully I didn't make that much of a fool of myself...!

Anyway....! We'll see how this goes. Meanwhile, I've been making good on the synopsis writing that I talked about last Sunday, as I'm working out both Current WIPs. This is precisely what each of them needed, so now I'm not flailing or getting frustrated. I've gotten as far as End of Act I on one of them and almost ready to get into the main part of Act I on the other. So how far am I going to go with them? Good question. I think for the shorter project I'll go to the finish and for the longer one I'll go as far as need be until I feel I can get back to the main writing of it. The longer one has a lot of outtakes and notes that I've come up with over the last couple of years so I have a lot to work with, whereas the shorter one is newer and thus needs a lot more prep.

Other than that, not much else to report...I have an eye appointment on Thursday (I'm terrible at timely checkups, though my eyesight is pretty much still the same) and A gets vaccine shot #2 on Friday. And that's pretty much it!

Hope everyone has a good week!

I feel kind of annoyed that I'm not getting nearly as much work done as I really should. I know for a fact that I'm still spending a bit too much time dawdling and delaying when I should be writing. Before I started on these two projects, I was still extremely unsure as to where I was going with them (and from past experience, writing without at least some destination in mind tends to produce a lot of pointless drivel in my experience). That's definitely not the situation with both of these projects now. I'm getting maybe about 600 words a day done for each, when I know I could get at least a few hundred more if I put my mind to it. I definitely need to accelerate here. I'm not asking for 2k each per day (though I could probably do that every now and again if I prepped myself?), I'm just looking to bring it up to maybe 1k each for now. Pretty sure I can still hit that in the time I have.

I've been thinking more about self-publishing Diwa & Kaffi lately. As much as I would love to see a much wider audience for it, I think it's probably still a bit too unique to be a good First Novel, unless I pour a hell of a lot more Salesperson Power into it, which I really do not have. More to the point, that particular novel is one that I think needs a specific outlet and a specific brand (ugh hate that word) and I think I can deliver it (ugh hate that phrase). Which means I need to commission a cover. I have a few online artists in mind that I think could nail the mood and the image of what I'd like to use. I'd need to reach out to them and ask for rates.

I'm also thinking of looking into using Barnes & Nobel this time out for self-publishing...I need to do more research and pro/con for it, but I've never had all that much luck with Createspace for the physical copies. We shall see.

Meanwhile, A is taking a few days off this coming week so we'll be doing some local fun stuff: heading to the deYoung to see a few art exhibits and have a walk around (which we haven't done in ages), and head to the SF Zoo as well. It's our own local vacation considering we don't have too much else to do at the moment. Some stores and restaurants are opening up again, but we're not going to be in line for indoor dining just yet, not from past experience. I do kind of miss our vacations, though!

A reminded me that it's been a year since our last trip, which happened to be our visit to MA. I just remember it was COLD AF a few of those days, and all I had was a lightish coat and a scarf, hat and mitts. I do miss our yearly visits to the UK and the occasional one to Hawaii! We're not planning on heading anywhere soon (again -- obvious reasons), but it'll be nice once we can do so again.

Hope everyone has a good week!

So it's officially been two weeks since I left the former Day Job, considering I ended my run on Tuesday the 31st. It's felt like a two-week staycation, to be honest...I kept myself busy doing errands and sneaking a bit of exercises in there, but I also spent a lot of time unplugging from that particular rat race. If I'm going to get back into the workforce, I want to have a clear mind and a much healthier sense of dedication to it. I'm pretty sure that wherever I go, it won't be nearly as stressful as high level business banking with consistently tetchy systems, that's for sure. I don't think I'll be doing that again.

But yeah...it's been a two-week vacation of not entirely making good on my Grand Best Laid Plans. It frustrates me, sure, but I think those days were needed. Now it's time for me to roll up the sleeves and get back to work. I'm finishing up the Diwa & Kaffi post-production and hope to get it ready for submission in the next few days. I also plan on doing more work on the Next Possible Writing Projects as well.

Let's get moving again.

Meet the Lidwells:  The revision for this one is going a hell of a lot faster than I expected!  I know it's mostly due to the fact that I'm not carving up and rewriting big chunks of bad writing this time out.  But I'm already right about at the halfway point, which surprises me anyway!  The most work I've had to do so far is extend an important scene (I felt it wrapped far too quickly and didn't completely make its point), change a character's first name, and some minor continuity cleanup.  Other than that, I've just been cleaning up the dialogue.  I'm hoping to get this one done by the end of the month.  At that time I'll finally get the cover nailed down and the book will be ready for uploading to Smashwords and elsewhere! :)

The Apartment Complex Story (as yet untitled): In case you're not on Twitter, I made it official: the outlining has commenced for the next project!  What I'm doing here is nailing down all the plot points that I'd come up with already on 750Words and putting them in some semblance of order on the index card outline.  Once that's done, then I can expand on it, insert subplots and other bits of info and whatnot.  Then I can start on the writing proper!  I'm still up in the air on the writing...I'm half tempted to write this one longhand, but we shall see.  As for the title...this has to be a first.  I usually have some kind of title for my project, even if it's a stolen song title as a placeholder!  I've a feeling this one's not going to come to me until pretty late in the game, once I've already written most of it.  [Side note: I also have ideas for the cover, which include possibly hiring out an artist for the first time; I know exactly what I want it to look like, but it's going to need a pro.  Specifically I want it to have a manga-like cover, so I'm looking around at a few webcomic artists I follow whose style will fit.  It'll cost me, but it'll definitely be worth it.]

I've been trying to actively limit my time online lately, because passively trying to do so doesn't seem to be working all that well.  Which basically means I need to make myself busy.  If my Day Job has me by the neck, then hey, there you go, but...I'm talking during slow times.  This is partly why I started the AC outlining earlier than I'd planned.  I need a distraction to keep me from the distractions!

Anyhoo.   Keeping busy, doing lots of writing.  Things are going well. :)
