Okay, so this month's mass downloading from eMusic? Most of the early albums of Yes! I'm surprised I don't have more of their stuff. Say what you will about overblown 70s prog-rock, I have a soft spot for it and these guys are fun to listen to. :)

ITEM: I need to update my current default LJ icon. Obviously Arkham West no longer looks out over the corner of Bay and Stockton. I'll miss the view...but at the same time, I think it's good that I'll have less distraction. The new writing nook isn't much to sing about just yet, since we've only just plugged in a few days ago.

ITEM: Speaking of plugging in...first two days of working at home not too bad. Again, not as much distraction from outside, a LOT less ambient noise, and a better connection adds to that. Now if only my workplace would hurry up and upgrade the server so it's not lagging both here AND at work...

ITEM: I strangely feel the need to pick up where I left off re: The Process of Belief. Now that we're somewhat settled to a degree, I think I may dig out the notes I'd taken and do a bit of writing tonight! Haven't written for a few weeks do the move, so perhaps it's time to start up again...

ITEM: Note to self--if I'm ever going to get anything done writingwise, I've got to stop with the life-altering events like moving and major vacations. :p

ITEM: This damn cold is sort of going away...I hope. It depends on the time of day. Sometimes I'm stuffed up, other times I'm hacking up a lung...and other times I'm totally fine with just a case of minor sniffles. Razzafrazzin' allergies. X(

ITEM: We get to work so early that I really should take advantage of that and do some longhand writing.

ITEM: Still loving that new Editors album. Also? Need to download the Great Northern songs from eMusic, as I found they're on there! :)

ITEM: Did I say that I LOVE how quiet it is in our new neighborhood? That we don't have to crank up our TV or hear skateboarders heading down the street at 2am or worry about rattling windows or idiots throwing shoes through them on Friday nights?

ITEM: fnord.

ITEM: new tag--richmond sf! :)

Yeah, Whatever by Moev:

I remember this one from back in the days when I listened to WAMH, but I could never find it anywhere--back then, I seem to remember that no one ever seemed to want to carry anything on the Nettwerk label. Back in the day when I listened to WAMH, they played the track "Wanting" a lot, and the only place I had it was on one of my radio tapes from back in the day.

This is a surprisingly good, if a bit dated, album for the time it came out (1989). And it reminds me of the best parts of the following albums:
--Front 242, Front by Front (for its industrial funk and low-pitched vocals)
--New Order, Brotherhood (especially with the bass solo on "Wanting")
--PiL, Happy? (for its late 80s alt.funk)
--Xymox, Twist of Shadows (for its atmospheric and dancy goth feel)

But a LOT of Front 242. "Crucify Me" could easily have been by them. And thinking about it, a lot of Nettwerk's stuff at that time (read: Severed Heads, Skinny Puppy, among others) was very dancy industrial funk, so it only makes sense.

4 out of 5, and I think I need to download more of them.

A Secret Wish by Propaganda:

I'm actually kind of surprised I never had this on vinyl. I used to see it everywhere in the dollar bins back in the day. I guess it's one of those albums where I knew of the band, but never really knew any of their songs...that is, until I heard "Duel" just this afternoon and thought OMG...WFNX used to play this ALL the time!! and realized I did in fact know their stuff. Again, kinda dated, very 80s UK techno/industrial in line with Art of Noise (though not as sample-heavy), with a touch of the UK soul of Yaz(oo), but very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 again, simply for retro's sake! :p

A Split Second by A Split Second:

Ooh, yeah. Not nearly as good as I'd hoped. Think Ministry before they went hardcore, Adrian Sherwood if he only released demos, Skinny Puppy at their happiest, Front 242 at their most lackluster, and all scrambled together with very dated synth instruments. I will give them props for using a Wilhelm Scream on "On Command", an otherwise 'meh' track. "Scandanavian Bellydance" is pretty good as background music, but nothing big. I'll keep just for posterity, and something to throw on if I'm feeling in a retro mood, but it's definitely not the best thing I've heard in the genre.

3 out of 5...not nearly as industrial as I'd hoped.

Distressed Gentlefolk by The Jazz Butcher:

Hmm. Did I download the Woodentops' Giant by mistake? ;)

Not that that's a bad thing...this is a great acoustic album that came out about the same time as Love & Rockets' Express--in fact, on the same label, Big Time--and on par with that great Woodentops album. I consider this one that I got into in college, due to the fact my freshman year roommate had it on cd. Again, a band I'd heard of, but hadn't heard. I quite like it, actually!

3.5 out of 5...not exactly memorable for me, but I really enjoy it!

Jamboree by Beat Happening:

I tell you, Sonic Youth created one giant musical Ponzi Scheme and they're just reaping in the accolades without having to release an album every five seconds like Bob Pollard. BH owes SY some of it (I think they owe Yo La Tengo and the Violent Femmes a bit as well), but at the same time, BH is owed by about 5.4 million other 3-piece post-punk lo-fi bands.

That said, I'd completely forgotten about "Indian Summer" until I heard it just now. Not a bad track, that. It's goofy, very off the cuff, and I'm extremely amused by the occasional mumbled line as if he'd forgotten what he was supposed to sing. It took me a bit to get used to this album, but I've a feeling it'll definitely grow on me.

4 out of 5...simply because if they can release this stuff, so can the Flying Bohemians! ;)

ETA: "I love you like a chocolate steak"?? oookay...

Hey all!

I need suggestions for stuff to download from eMusic.

Yes, [livejournal.com profile] maps_or_guitars, I'm looking in your direction, but anyone can join in.

Thing is, I'm looking for old stuff. Not suggestions for new bands, as I usually get my fix on that from other sources. What I'm looking for is old-school college radio stuff that I grew up with, stuff you'd hear on WAMH or WMUA or whatever college station you listened to back in the 80s (and maybe into the very early 90s, but I'm focusing on the 80s mostly), stuff that's obscure but classic, stuff that's necessary to someone's collection.

Bands from any genre, but I'm leaning towards "college rock" of the day. I was obsessed with The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, New Order, Wire, and anything from 4AD from that period, so I think that kinda gives you a bit of a clue as to what I like...but I also like Swans, The Fall, Severed Heads, the early German industrial of the day, and a lot of the less-poppy bands as well, so I'm open to anything.

Give me suggestions! I've got a connoisseur rank on eMusic (that is, I can--and easily do most times--download 100 songs per month), so albums as well as tracks are worth it. I'm sure I'll already have some suggestions that come my way

Of course, if it's not on eMusic, suggest it anyway--I want to see if I can find some of this stuff online or in the bins at Amoeba!
