[Pasted from my Welcome to Bridgetown site]

It’s been a wild ride of just over fifteen years here in Spare Oom. All those hours working remotely for the Former Day Job. All that music streamed, downloaded, listened to, cataloged and shared. Cats coming in to visit, play and nap. Books read. Characters and maps drawn. Word seeks completed. Guitars played and playing styles honed and songs written. Views of the Golden Gate Bridge to gaze at when I needed a mental break from it all.

All those words churned out on the 750Words site. Numerous blog entries on two separate sites. Personal journal entries scribbled into notebooks. Trunked ideas gathering dust in my Dropbox. The moment I finally finished the Bridgetown Trilogy after a multi-year hiatus. The decision to self-publish my work. Learning how to properly edit my own work. Learning how to create e-book covers. Seven completed and self-published novels. And another one started and eventually making its way to publication.

Some days I felt like I was wasting time and getting nothing done, other days I felt like I was kicking ass.

It’s been an interesting time here, and now it’s time to shut down the PC and pack it up along with all the externals and other hardware, because it’s heading over to the new place tomorrow morning.

See you on the flip side.

A has two work-related trips this week and next, which means I'll be flying solo for a few days. No big deal, but of course I'm going to be worried about the two kitties while I'm at work! They'll be fine, though...whenever the both of us are away for a couple of hours, the most they get up to is snacking on kibble and napping in various parts of the house. [The only door we'll close is to the main bathroom, as Cali has occasionallly been known to somehow get herself stuck in the shower stall, heh.]

Thankfully the Day Job has always been flexible so I can drive A to and from the airport when needed!

If you haven't heard elsewhere already, as of 1 April I have now officially started the complete rewrite of Theadia! The tl;dr here is that I'm approaching it the same way I did in rewriting The Phoenix Effect as the Bridgetown Trilogy way back in the day because I feel its current version doesn't do the story justice. Will this too be a trilogy? A duology? A really long single book? Stay tuned!

But yeah, that's been on my mind these last couple of days, and I'm excited about that. I've been ensuring I have a good stretch of time to focus solely on it, just like before. It's kind of an exercise to see if the process that was so successful previously could be repeated here, I suppose. Right now there hasn't been all that much divergence other than rephrasing a few passages and pulling out some of the chaff, but I'm fully expecting that to happen soon enough, once I start elaborating on some of the subplots and introducing more of the characters.

Other than that, I have today off, so I'm hoping to get a lot done after I do some of my morning errands like playing with the cats and grocery shopping!

Our weeklong vacation has been very relaxing and enjoyable so far. We spent the last three days up in Bodega Bay just enjoying the scenery, the wildlife, and the blessed silence, but we are now back in the city and plan to do not much of anything except maybe do a bit of shopping and go to the zoo at some point. Can't complain! I do plan on getting a few other things done on the interim considering I have all the time for it.

Also happy that I'm catching up on sleep. The last several weeks have been kind of wonky, between waking up at 4am some days and working until 8pm other days, partly due to a few people being out on leave, but hopefully that'll change soon upon their return. One of my coworkers gladly watched/fed/played with our cats in our absence, and they've updated me on what's going on at the shop (which, apparently, not much of anything new other than a few grumpy people and another person unsurprisingly calling out AGAIN). I'll be honest, I'm glad I now work at a place where I can return after a vacation and not have to worry about spending the next two weeks cleaning up the fallout of any email inboxes!

Meanwhile, today's vacation excitement is to take the bus downtown to explore the brand new IKEA store. Heh.

In preparation for our mini-vacation starting tomorrow, we've spent most of today so far (after a tasty brunch at Joe's Coffee Shop) cleaning the apartment. This would include: using the Uproot Clean rake on the two rugs in the living room, a major scrub-down of the shower, washing of bedsheets and blankets, floor mopping, and vacuuming. [I will be starting in on that final one once I catch my breath.]

And who, you ask, will be watching over our cats in our absence? One of my coworkers will be cat-sitting! They have experience and have confirmed their work schedule fits perfectly on the days we need. They'll be staying here so we're just making sure everything is clean and in working order.

And in between all that, I am of course also doing my weekly PC cleaning, of which I am about two weeks behind on. I'm not too worried considering I've had this new computer for about a month now, but it doesn't hurt to chase out those pesky bugs and fix those weak spots. Thankfully I have not had any PC issues so far other than the occasional internet drop-out (which I've mentioned here before), so it's always good to ensure it doesn't happen anyway!

Am now all sweaty and a bit tired, but it's worth it.

This is the second week in a row that I've got Sunday and Monday off followed by working two midshifts on Tuesday and Wednesday, then three opens of varying lengths for the rest of the week. It's a bit exhausting by the end of the week, but it's not that bad because I get Sunday to do stuff with A and catch up on other things on Monday.

So what did we do today? We drove up to the Petaluma to have lunch with A's brother (and drop off a set of our house keys, something we'd been meaning to do for a while) and did a bit of shopping as well. I was hoping to go to Tall Toad Music downtown to buy some guitar strings for my acoustic but by the time we finished at Target it was getting late, it was far too hot and I just wanted to head home. A and I are so used to the constant 50s-60s and fog these last couple of weeks that going outside in the hot sun was not all that fun.

What was fun was that we finally went to the premium outlet center up there and got some super sweet clothing deals. I am now flush in tees and collared shirts for work and also picked up a pair of nice shoes for super cheap. They also have a place there that's a combination used book nook and cat adoption center, so you can chill out and just play with the kitties there for a bit. They'd just let them out onto the floor when we walked by and got to watch a bit of kitty silliness through the front windows, heh.

[Speaking of cats, that's part of the reason we wanted to drop off the keys -- though we have a cat sitter for our upcoming trip, we felt it might be good for our relatives to have a set in case we're away again, or for emergency purposes. But mainly to ensure that Juli and Cali are well looked after, of course!]

And now I get to chill for the rest of the evening...

Yes it is! it's weird when I *do* have a Sunday off because I'm so used to my occasionally oddball work schedule that midweek feels like a Monday, heh. And I have tomorrow off, yay! Which means I get another 'get caught up' day! Woo!

Anyway -- a coworker of mine is going to be stopping by very soon to visit our two cats as we're hiring them for cat sitting when we take a mini-trip in early September. They've got pet-sitting experience and we get along swimmingly (and amusingly I often forget I'm basically their parents' age) and live just up the road so it won't be that much of a problem either way. This is the first time we'll be away from the cats for more than a few hours so this is going to feel a bit weird, but the fuzzbutts will be in good hands.

Meanwhile, one of our elderly neighbors passed away some weeks ago and they've been slowly emptying out the apartment. He was one of this building's longest tenants for quite a few decades, and sadly was a bit of a hoarder (super nice guy, though, and one of the first people I met when we moved in) so there's been a slowly growing pile of all kinds of things out front that will probably need more than one dumpster to get it all out and away. There's also most likely going to be a few months' worth of remodel/reno while they're at it. This added to the downstairs neighbors moving out, the southern lightwell and the garage getting some repairs, and an upcoming street drain excavation and fix, I kind of feel bad for our landlady (another super nice person, and we're on her Good List!), but it's gotta be done!

And that's what's going on here in foggy and wet Richmond District these days...

This past week at work was exhausting and a bit weird due to people calling out and things not going as planned, but yesterday it ended quite nicely with me almost completely avoiding the registers by way of finishing up several small work-related errands I'd been putting off. I got most of them completed with few issues and spent the rest of the day relaxing! Thankfully my schedule is even more back to normal this coming week with only one mid-shift and no closes. Yay!  Oh-- and I may be in the running for becoming the new liquor manager for the store...? Still not sure where I stand with it as the posting schedule got kind of effed up, but the talk around the shop is hinting that I *might* be in the lead? Who knows? More to come as this unfolds...

Today we were originally going to go to Crissy Field but the fog had come in over the mouth of the Bay, so we nixed that as it would probably be a bit cold and unexciting. So we ended up walking up to the farmer's market to buy fruits and have lunch at one of our favorite taquerias. I was still a bit tired during the walk home but managed it without wimping out and catching the bus, heh.

Anything else to report...? No, not really. Although I need to talk with my coworker this week to plan out their cat-sitting for us. We're letting them stay over while this happens so that's fine, but I'll need to make sure everything is good to go, they get paid, and have some extra keys made for them to use during that time.

Hope everyone has a good week!

The renovation guys are up on the roof this morning again, and though I'm not entirely sure what they're up to, I'm thinking that it might be that they're redoing the drainage on the southern side of the building as it would always pool and not drain properly. I would not be surprised if there was a bit of water damage up there.

Meanwhile, I haven't heard anything about new rear windows as of yet, but I have confirmed with the landlady that we are getting them! All I ask is that they let us know ahead of time when they're going to do ours, so we can corral the cats and keep them from escaping. Oh, and move things out of the way, heh.

In writing news, I hit 1108 words on MU4 yesterday! Yay! That's the most I've done in one sitting for this particular project, and I'm quite happy about it. This is what happens when I have a day off and not distract myself with the internets! Heh.

As they often say, weather in San Francisco really depends on which neighborhood you happen to be in. Out here in the Richmond it tends to be a bit cooler than downtown, though downtown can be a bit windy from the crosswinds coming off the Bay. The fog bank always seems to stop somewhere around Presidio Avenue near the JCC before it eventually retreats or burns off by midafternoon. Today my neighborhood had a nice thick fog layer going, but now it's only lingering over the mouth of the Bay, right at the GG Bridge, and the rest of the sky is clear. And it's warmer than yesterday! Not bad for a day off if I say so myself...

Which reminds me: I've been told by our landlady that we'll be getting new rear windows sometime in the next couple of weeks! Which is great because they're both a bit worn out and possibly touched with a bit of water damage on the sills. We of course plan on getting screens for these new windows so we can enjoy the cool air during warm days while the kitties can still perch up there and watch the birds. Looking forward to better working windows!

Last week was a mixed blessing: it was all opening shifts, which I love...but I found myself exhausted by the end of it. Part of it was due to being short-staffed at work (two people calling out sick on certain days, slim schedule on others), and part of it was an uptick of customers. Which is fine, except that quite often it was either one-at-a-time (another appears in line just as I'm finishing up with someone) or dead-dead-dead-NINEATONCE surges. And one of the days I pretty much ran the entire front end on my own with only occasional help. This week's upcoming schedule is a bit odd in that I have three mid-shifts in a row followed by two opens, all in a row. I'm hoping it won't be too overwhelming.

Meanwhile, today was one of those Best Laid Plans days in which we came back from brunch to learn that one of our hot water tanks in the basement broke somehow and a replacement would be coming...maybe tomorrow or Tuesday?...which means getting laundry done was nixed. Which also turned into an afternoon of laziness in which I didn't even get around to vacuuming the apartment. D'OH! Oh well. I have tomorrow off so I'll take our stuff to my favorite laundromat down the street midmorning, then hopefully I can get some of the house cleaning done afterwards!

Oh! And I brought both cats to the vet this past Thursday. Just a general wellness checkup / vaccine update, and I'm quite happy to say that both Cali and Jules received a clean bill of health! The only drama there was getting Cali in the cat carrier, which eventually included me throwing my sweater over her, dropping her in the carrier and then pulling my sweater out. She was NOT happy about that...but they've since forgiven me and are both doing just fine.

Hope everyone has a nice week ahead!

Finally made good on my promise to get my haircut today at the finally-reopened Supercuts on Fillmore. It's still long, just past shoulder length, but the dead- and split-ends are finally gone! I'm cursed with having extremely straight and fine hair so I can't really shape it in any way as gravity will eventually take over. On the other hand, I'm blessed with a full head of it even at my age, so I'm fine with that trade-off. Still, I spent a bit of change getting a trim and some spray that will hopefully keep it healthy.

And while I was out, I went to the vet's office across the street from the Supercuts to set up an appointment later this week to get a wellness check done for Jules and Cali. They're not going to be happy about it, but it's gotta be done sooner or later. As I write this they're both here in Spare Oom having their afternoon naps, unaware of their fate a few days from now...heh.

Anything else? I'm still behind on getting work done on MU4, but I'm slowly catching up. Just have to stop screwing around and get to work!

...has been interesting so far. The Bay Area has been getting hit with multiple weird storm fronts these last few days so there's been hella rain (as they say in the local parlance) and hella wind to go along with it. We're fine here at home, safe on the top floor with a non-leaking roof above us and no sub-basement levels (our garage is on ground level), but we've seen some trees and branches down and a bit of flooding and washouts in the neighborhood. The first hit us late Tuesday night and apparently after I left work at 1:30 there was a mad rush of panic buying that lasted for about six hours, followed by a few days of rather quiet retail work. On a side note, the cats are fine but a tad confused by all the noise going on outside, especially all that pitterpat on the bathroom skylights.

I've been rereading A Division of Souls these last couple of days in preparation for writing MU4 as well as making a few mental notes for the Great Trilogy Remastering as well. I think it still holds up amazingly well, not to mention I'm still a bit blown away at the level of detail I put into it, and I think most of the Remastering will end up being a general fix-up of formatting errors, making a few better word choices and a bit of grammatical spot-cleaning. I'm also having fun revisiting a few of my favorite scenes! I'm really looking forward to both the Remaster and the new project!

Hope everyone's having a great new year so far!
jon_chaisson: (Default)
It's wintertime here in the Bay Area, which means overcast and overly humid days and temps that don't quite break the mid 50s. It's not the bitterly cold and snowy New England winter of my youth, sure, but it's got its own miserableness. The humidity (along with whatever happens to be blooming this time of year) starts kicking off my allergies giving me a migraine, and every room in the house is chilly. And given where I work, I have my coat on all the time as it's always a chilly mid-50s inside as well.

Our two cats seem not to mind, though. They're silly as always, washing-up sessions devolving into playfighting and chasing each other through the apartment. Cali's a terror and has already damaged one of the cat tree posts and at least two of their toys -- she'd make a great mouser. Jules is more laid back and chill and takes her own time to sort things out, which makes her slow to play with but super smart and wily in other areas. She'll bat Cali with a few hilarious cheap-shots just when you think they're done wrestling. At the end of the night however, once they finally chill down, they'll join us on the bed (or go under it) for a nap.

At least I don't have to shovel any snow or drive in it! :)

I've got a two-day weekend here (off today and tomorrow) so I get to a) sleep in despite being woken up by cats, and b) catch up on things without much interruption or lack of time. A's parents will be coming in early this afternoon for lunch which means that I spent most of this morning post-coffee with vacuuming and tidying up (see: cats again).

In the meantime, I'm sneaking this entry in while A finishes cooking before I finish cleaning/bringing down the trash/etc and doing my weekly PC cleaning.

I'll be honest, I've been feeling kind of guilty for not being all that productive with the writing, but I've told myself not to be swayed by that. I'm allowed a few off days, especially at the end of the year! Besides, I'll most likely be catching up on the blogging later tonight after A's parents head out. I just have to remember, it's not about feeling guilty for not writing...it's about preparing myself for the next writing project phase!

jon_chaisson: (Default)
Having two young cats in the apartment has been a bit of a learning curve for both kitties and owners, but we're all doing okay. Jules and Cali have come to a tentative sisterly agreement that they'll keep each other company, share the food dish, and take turns being the Occasional Annoying Sibling. Nothing is broken, scratched, fallen over or destroyed (yet) so that's a good sign. The fosters did a great job teaching them!

It's also Q4 time again, so the Day Job has seen an uptick of customer flow. From what I hear from the managers, we're doing amazingly well for a small store (we're half the size of most others) and our neighborhood loves us. Sure, we get the occasional Grumpy Gus that finds fault in the smallest things but they're very much in the minority. And our shoplifting issue has lessened considerably since we started hiring security! And as I mentioned at the writing blog, our bosses frown on forced overtime thanks to our union, so it's not as if I'm getting my ass handed to me on a ten-hour shift like I used to at Yankee. Props to the head manager as well for doing a great job with the scheduling as well! We'll still have the occasional short-staffed day, but those are increasingly few and far between as we hire more workers.

I'm trying to get caught up with my writing duties today and doing a pretty good job of it, so I can't complain!
jon_chaisson: (Default)
...and all sorts of silly nonsense has already taken place. Jules is about six months old and full of energy, extremely curious and even a bit silly at times. The first day and evening was a mix of ...where am I? and yay look at all this stuff I can explore! She hasn't quite figured out that we sleep at night and wakes us up around 2am demanding playtime, so that's something we'll need to train her on. But yeah...looks like she's going to fit in just fine!

Her sister California (I've been calling her Cali but she may have a different name, we shall see) is currently healing at a foster home after being spayed so we're not entirely sure when she'll come, but hopefully within the next week or so! It'll be good to have two of them here so they can entertain each other when need be!

In which I come back from a four-day respite up north (Mendocino) to work four days in a row doing evening shifts. I don't mind them, except for the fact that I walk in experiencing the tail end of the lunch rush, followed by maybe an hour of downtime, then around three hours of the post-work-commute rush, so by the time 8pm rolls around I am wiped. Thankfully next week's schedule is up and it's all mornings, which I prefer!! Those are usually dead quiet from 6-8am and I'm done just about the end of the lunch rush. Then I get to go home and write!

Speaking of the respite, it was quite a relaxing visit up north, even though the drive there itself (around 150 miles) is quite the slog with no really easy way to get there. Most of it is up 101 and that's fine, but I can either turn onto 128 which will take me through narrow-road wine country and redwood forest which is nice but offers few pit stops, or I can turn at 20 further north and take the twisty-turny-up-and-over-the-mountain-road which is also nice but exhausting. Despite all that, we only experienced about 10 minutes of fireworks, had breakfast delivered to us each morning, and even got to visit the bookstore cat (whose name is of course the Great Catsby). The weather was cooler and there was a distinct lack of allergens and pollen in the air, much to our relief. Plenty of pictures were taken!

Up and coming: we will be seeing Motion City Soundtrack again in Berkeley -- the same band we saw just before the pandemic started -- on Sunday, and next Saturday we'll be seeing the Airborne Toxic Event with the SF Symphony! Looking forward to both shows!
