I made good on my recent plan to surprise-release Diwa & Kaffi on July 1! Here's the link:

https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1412637

So how did it feel to pull it all together in record time? Really great, actually! Even with the trouble I had getting the photo editing software to behave for the cover, I'm happy with the result! I'd finished revision on it some time ago so most of the work was just on the cover and the formatting. The latter only took a few hours at most.

I've definitely missed releasing new e-books on a yearly basis. I'm still happy that I took a few years off for personal reasons, but I'm glad to be back. And if this one does well maybe I'll pick up one of my backburner projects to work on while I work on MU4 so I can get back into the habit again!

So this past Friday we had a surprise drop of the brand spankin' new album by Sigur Rós, who haven't released a studio album since...Kveikur back in 2013?? On Thursday they just popped in on their Instagram feed and say "hey gang, our new album ÁTTA is out tomorrow, have at it" and of course us fans were like WOOOOOO and downloaded/ordered toot sweet.

Meanwhile on that very same day, I'd gotten an email from Smashwords informing me that their annual July sale was coming and if I'd be interested in signing up for it? Of course I always do, considering that I always get new readers out of it, even if I don't make a dime because I offer them for free during those sales. [Side note: It seems that In My Blue World is my best 'seller', and I'm cool with that too.]

So I start thinking: what if I do a surprise drop of Diwa & Kaffi?

I mean, it's been ready for a couple of years now. The only reason I never released it is because of the pandemic and that I'd been wanting to commission someone to do the cover art but never quite got around to it. It's not doing anyone any good just sitting there on my hard drive, available to no one but myself, yeah?

So this means two things: One, I'm planning -- hoping -- to create my own 'temporary' cover and have it prepped and ready to go by 1 July, which menas...a little less than two weeks. Two, that the book will be formatted and ready for release on the same day. I'm pretty sure I can pull it off, considering I'd completed all revision on the book some months ago, and these two steps I can easily do in the course of a few days before or after work.

I'm really looking forward to this, and I hope you enjoy it too, because I'm super proud of this particular novel!

The start of a revision process always feels like it takes forever, doesn't it?  I still feel like I haven't even made a dent on In My Blue World, even though I've been giving it a hard push over this last week.  But considering that I'm now looking at the story as a whole instead of a series of 750Words sessions, I still don't have a sense of how long this story actually is.  I know it's novel length, but I don't know the word count.  [On the plus side, I've already strung together about 15k words, so I think I'm still on schedule.]  My process here is that I've been copying a handful of those 750Words sessions and stringing them together in chapter form until I have about 15-20 pages to work with.  It's working so far!

I spent a few hours yesterday fiddling with the book cover lat night, and I think I'm getting close with it.  Bought the usage rights for the picture, played around with the filters, and made another attempt at the text.  It still needs work, but it's getting there!  Thanks to my friend and ex-roommate Bunny for teaching me a few nifty Photoshop tricks this morning that I can use for it! :)  The plan here is to get the cover finished so I can create postcards in time for Worldcon.

So yeah, the first week of Revision Month seems to be going pretty well.  Slow, but in the right direction!

As expected, though, I've been ridiculously busy.  I'm also putting in time for the Apartment Complex story and other things, all while trying not to hide from the world.  It's tricky, but I'm managing it so far!

Have a good weekend, everyone! :)

Late last night, just as I was finishing up my writing session for the Apartment Complex story, I may have actually had a few breakthroughs!  Which is a great thing, considering how much of a pain in the ass it's been.

First, the title: I've FINALLY come up with one.  It's the word for 'bonded friend' in the tintrite language (the tintrite -- pronounced TIN-treet -- are the four-legged dragonlike beings in the story, and Kaffi, one of the main characters, is one).  Right now it's "abidamé" (AH-bih-DAH-may) but I'm going to play around with it a bit until I've nailed the spelling and the pronunciation.  When I come up with this sort of thing I always do a lot of tweaking and double-checking Google Translate and all, just to make sure it doesn't translate to something odd elsewhere.  Once I get this title solid, I'll stop calling it the AC.  Heh.

Second, the style:  I finished a new chapter last night that I think really works well.  There's no dialogue but it's all from Kaffi's introspective point of view, of a day in his teenage life hanging out with is best friend Diwa all day long.  When I finally finished it, I realized that I'd finally found the style this book needs.  Amusingly enough, it's the same style as my trilogy!  Which means I have a lot of work ahead of me. Good work, though.  Positive, forward-moving work!  Let me tell you, it's like a weight off my back, now that I've straightened that out!  Sheesh.  :p

Meanwhile, I'm still writing In My Blue World entirely on 750Words.  I'm finding that site is perfect for me to write in a short, crisp style.  It worked wonders for Meet the Lidwells, so I'm going to continue with this format for my shorter, tighter works.  I'm planning on writing pretty much the entire rough first draft first before I print it out and work on a revision/rewrite.  Also, chances are pretty good that this one's going to cross the finish line before the other one, so I'm going to plan on doing some pre-release work on this one as well.  If I have it done or close to done by the time Worldcon comes around, I'll maybe create some bookmarks or some postcards.  Which means I'll also need to work on a cover!  I'm up in the air on this one...not sure if I'm going to go the Shutterstock way or if I'll see if I can commission someone. We shall see.  I need to write the thing first!  Heh.

Things are indeed looking up.

Hope everyone has a great rest of the week!

Weekend? What is this 'weekend' you speak of?

*whew* What a busy couple of weeks! Sunday night going to the symphony then waking up stupid:early AM to jump on a plane to Hawaii for a week. A relaxing 5.5 days in sunny (and occasionally rainy) climes to get back late Saturday night...only to wake up early on Sunday to meet up with a few east coast friends in town for their vacation. Then back to the Day Jobbery on Monday. And with one major (but thankfully fixable) screwup, Emm and coworker have just been dropped off at SFO to head out to Manila again.

So yeah...lots of great times had over the past few weeks, but MAN OH MAN was it jam-packed! I do not want to do anything at all this weekend. Maybe some grocery shopping, but that's about it.

Well. Me being me, left to my own devices on a weekend, I will most likely be staying in Spare Oom and cranking out more pages for the final wrap-up of The Persistence of Memories.

Oh yeah! Not sure if you saw my cover mock-up that I posted elsewhere online a few days ago, but if not, here you go:

I think this one fits the theme of the book quite nicely! I knew I wanted a night image, or at least an earth/space one, given that I wanted stars visible. I downloaded the hi-res/no watermark picture from Shutterstock (same as last time) and will be using the same software as before. I'm aiming for a mid-April release for TPoM, so I will let you all know as soon as I have a hard date planned.

In fact, April is looking to be the first of a few busy spring/summer months for me. I have a lot of fun things planned for my blogs as well as other projects. Will let you know more when we get closer to the dates!

On that note, going to sit back, relax, and...not do much at all, really. :)

Hey kids! Here's two covers I tried out for Book II. Same as always, photos from Shutterstock and editing via PicMonkey. They're pretty rough, so these are definitely not the final covers...just tryouts.  The left one retains the cityscape theme while hinting at the rest of the universe being close by (thus the city being so far down in the picture), while the right one actually ties in with a very important scene with Caren.  Let me know what you think!

After a slight bump in the road, in which I had to call Shutterstock to get them to process my payment correctly, I purchased a package of 5 downloads (which is good, considering I can use the others for books 2 and 3) and commenced playing with both Photoshop and PicMonkey to get what I wanted. I also consulted A. for her input on the visuals, asking what seemed to work best for a reader like herself.

The picture was taken by Tommy Zhang. :)

The funny thing is that I'd used Photoshop only for the cropping, as I was less than happy with the fonts they had available. And since I needed to work within the submission parameters most want, I had to make sure I had the right ratio. Which meant eyeing it because I can't do ratio math to save my life, measuring the picture using an actual ruler against my monitor (LIKE A BOSS) and considering it done. It's as close to the 1:1.33 ratio as I could get it.

As for the fonts, I used PicMonkey.com (thanks to Meagan for the suggestion!), which is what I'd used for the original outtakes. Goddess knows I did not want to use the Papyrus font (aka the pseudo-Celtic Wiccan font you see on all the New Age books), nor did I want to use the same science fiction fonts everywhere else. Something just that bit unique, but not overly so. The title is Geo Sans Light (bolded), and the subtitle and author name are both De Walpergen Pica.

So, total cost today? Just $41 for the five download credits on Shutterstock. I already own Photoshop, and used the free level of PicMonkey. Not bad at all.

Next up: Continuing the work on the final line edit, and uploading. :)
