Another nice but somewhat cool Sunday sees us taking a walk to our garden plot to make sure everything looks good after Friday/Saturday's rain, and yes! It not only looks healthy, some of our greens are actually VERY happy to be there! There's already major growth on the red lettuce and two of the tomato plants, and we only had to deadhead maybe one or two flowers that were already dying back. Quite proud of ourselves for doing pretty well first time out in ages!

After that we picked up a couple of peppermint mochas at one of our favorite coffee shops near Golden Gate Park (Rise & Grind on 8th) then walked back to Clement to do some shopping at the farmers' market. Lots of greens and citrus picked up, plus I was also able to speak to the person at the Rize Up bakery stand to let them know we're selling a ton of their bread at my shop and it's very popular. (We also got cookies from them, which I have not yet eaten, heh.) After a brunch burger n' beer at our usual haunt (the Richmond Republic) we headed back home to chill, relax and stream Time Team Specials on YouTube.

And speaking of plants, I'm trying to be better at taking care of the plants here in Spare Oom. They're all high up on bookshelves now to be out of kitty range, but in the process I've forgotten to water them every now and again. I just had to toss one of them as it was dead and shriveled up -- I think it was at the end of its cycle anyway -- but the rest aren't looking too bad, maybe just a bit droopy. I try to remember to water them every Sunday, the same day I usually run my PC cleaners and update this here site.

Alas, I skipped working on Theadia last night for various reasons, so I'll need to catch up tonight!

Sunday fun

First off, I'm quite happy that I was able to sleep in this morning, especially after changing the clocks last night. I've been waking up early even on my days off lately (I just have a lot I want to do), but today was a good sleeping-in day. The cats felt otherwise and started climbing all over us when it was clear we weren't up with the sun to feed them, but they forgave us after I filled their kibble dishes.

We made our way up to Petaluma this afternoon to have lunch at a lovely Swedish restaurant downtown, in which I ate an extremely tasty, filling and messy lamb wrap. We got coffee and walked around a bit afterwards, which of course meant stopping at Copperfield's Books, where I finally picked up the new Bob Stanley bio about The Bee Gees. (He's an excellent music writer and I highly recommend his work.)  We were home by late afternoon, and are now chilling with the cats and watching our latest bingewatch, Murder She Wrote. [Noted: I'd forgotten how corny it could be and how star-studded it was, but I'm also impressed that they make an effort to use Maine accents!]

Now? Just catching up on blogging and daily words. I have a slightly longer work week coming up, though they're almost all opens which I love.

Before my PC went all funky last month, I had a really good habit of running various cleaning apps on Sunday afternoons just to keep it in tip-top shape. (And considering I did that with my old PC and it still runs fine after four years, that's saying something.) Unfortunately I've been distracted by other things on the weekends so I've been missing it for weeks at a time.

Which is not as bad as something else I'd do on Sundays, which is water the plants in Spare Oom. I was reminded by A some weeks ago that I really needed to do that as some of them were looking extremely wilty. I am now back in the habit of watering the plants, running the PC cleaners, and doing any other around-the-house stuff that needs doing. I'd have done laundry today as well, but a) I'd forgotten to ask A to pick up quarters (which I can get at work tomorrow) and b) we spent most of today in the East Bay shopping at Ikea and elsewhere in Emeryville.

In the meantime, I've also done some much-needed dusting and putting away of things, so all I need to do now is prep a few blog entries for the week and maybe get a bit of revision work done as well.

For those playing along, I've been in Massachusetts for the last five days and just came back home to SF late last night. I am physically and emotionally exhausted and I called out from the Day Job today to recharge.

My father's calling hours were very well attended by at least 50-60 people -- relatives, friends, neighbors, coffee buddies, even an Elvis impersonator he knew -- and it was great to see so many of them. Quite a few I had to ask their name as I'd known of them but had never met them in person. It was also great to see a bunch of the old neighborhood gang paying respects. Most of the trip itself was just visiting my family, who are holding up well. And when I was back at my hotel, I mainly spent most of the time getting caught up on novel revision.

How do I feel? Well, as said, I'm exhausted. Not in a bad way, just drained from having to go through that as well as having to deal with several hours of crappy New England winter weather that I haven't dealt with for almost two decades. It took a lot of will power to get through it all. There's also the fact that I've been surrounded by several people in a short amount of time so I really should take a Covid test at some point today.

I should be better today if I take it slowly today. I have nothing planned other than laundry.

...the usual, I guess? This time out we walked up to Hamburger Haven, a literal greasy spoon up the way on Clement (it's been around since 1968 and very much looks it, decor-wise, even though there had been reno done during the pandemic) for a tasty and messy brunch. On the way back we walked through Mountain Lake Park, a tiny little triangle within the Presidio where we often see very happy dogs being walked, then after a quick stop at one of the corner stores we headed home.

Speaking of said store, this one, on the corner of California and 22nd, very much seems to be in its death throes and just selling off its remaining stock at this point. It's very empty and sad-looking, and I do hope that it gets a new owner at some point because it's been a great place otherwise. There's two coffee shops on the block that are thriving really well (and that one laundromat I go to because it's the best one in the hood), so I'd be shocked if it doesn't turn over sometime in the new year. I certainly hope it does, because I'd always zip over there for a soda and a snack whenever I was at the laundromat.

In other news, the huge APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) convention is in the city this coming week, so of course all sorts of nonsense will be happening with several streets closed off and busses rerouted. And apparently something is happening up the street on the 16th at the Legion of Honor Museum and the street my store is on may be closed off to traffic for the day. I'm working that morning, so I'm still not entirely sure what the setup is or if we'll be closing down the parking lot or what, but we shall see. Thankfully it's a short day for me so as soon as I'm off the clock I'm heading home!

Hope everyone has a good week ahead!

The head bookkeeper has taken an extended weekend to house sit (somewhere in the mountains, so I've been told) which means I've been doing 5:30 opens for the last couple of days. Surprisingly I'm not exhausted, but merely sleepy. Even yesterday, when I pulled a very heavy u-boat of bag bundles across the entire store to the front then emptied a full pallet of bagged ice in the walk-in freezer soon after? I wasn't all that tired. A good sign that I'm in much better shape than I thought, I guess? Either way, I have one more open and then a midshift, and then I have Wednesday off. Hopefully I won't be too drained by then. I'm thinking I should get back to doing the outside breaks again. I stopped last week due to the bad air quality (smoke from Oregon and far north CA), but it's gotten a little better again, so there's no reason not to. As long as the weather is with me!

Having good vibes about the work I'm doing on Queen Ophelia's War, even if it has been just a few paragraphs and sentences here and there. I know I have a few rough spots that are going to need a hell of a lot of work, but I'm not going to worry about it because once I get past those two or three problem scenes the rest is relatively smooth sailing. I'd also like to get back to MU4 as well, but one thing at a time for the moment.

Not much else to report, considering it's been a work-home-write-sleep cycle for the last several days. Looking forward to the next few days off, where I may do something crazy like laundry or grocery shopping! Heh.
jon_chaisson: (Default)
This is the second week in a row that I've got Sunday and Monday off followed by working two midshifts on Tuesday and Wednesday, then three opens of varying lengths for the rest of the week. It's a bit exhausting by the end of the week, but it's not that bad because I get Sunday to do stuff with A and catch up on other things on Monday.

So what did we do today? We drove up to the Petaluma to have lunch with A's brother (and drop off a set of our house keys, something we'd been meaning to do for a while) and did a bit of shopping as well. I was hoping to go to Tall Toad Music downtown to buy some guitar strings for my acoustic but by the time we finished at Target it was getting late, it was far too hot and I just wanted to head home. A and I are so used to the constant 50s-60s and fog these last couple of weeks that going outside in the hot sun was not all that fun.

What was fun was that we finally went to the premium outlet center up there and got some super sweet clothing deals. I am now flush in tees and collared shirts for work and also picked up a pair of nice shoes for super cheap. They also have a place there that's a combination used book nook and cat adoption center, so you can chill out and just play with the kitties there for a bit. They'd just let them out onto the floor when we walked by and got to watch a bit of kitty silliness through the front windows, heh.

[Speaking of cats, that's part of the reason we wanted to drop off the keys -- though we have a cat sitter for our upcoming trip, we felt it might be good for our relatives to have a set in case we're away again, or for emergency purposes. But mainly to ensure that Juli and Cali are well looked after, of course!]

And now I get to chill for the rest of the evening...
jon_chaisson: (Default)
This past week at work was exhausting and a bit weird due to people calling out and things not going as planned, but yesterday it ended quite nicely with me almost completely avoiding the registers by way of finishing up several small work-related errands I'd been putting off. I got most of them completed with few issues and spent the rest of the day relaxing! Thankfully my schedule is even more back to normal this coming week with only one mid-shift and no closes. Yay!  Oh-- and I may be in the running for becoming the new liquor manager for the store...? Still not sure where I stand with it as the posting schedule got kind of effed up, but the talk around the shop is hinting that I *might* be in the lead? Who knows? More to come as this unfolds...

Today we were originally going to go to Crissy Field but the fog had come in over the mouth of the Bay, so we nixed that as it would probably be a bit cold and unexciting. So we ended up walking up to the farmer's market to buy fruits and have lunch at one of our favorite taquerias. I was still a bit tired during the walk home but managed it without wimping out and catching the bus, heh.

Anything else to report...? No, not really. Although I need to talk with my coworker this week to plan out their cat-sitting for us. We're letting them stay over while this happens so that's fine, but I'll need to make sure everything is good to go, they get paid, and have some extra keys made for them to use during that time.

Hope everyone has a good week!

The day job has cut everyone's hours a bit just as they did last year, considering that summer is often the slowest time of the year for the shop. I'm currently hovering somewhere around 32 hours a week which to me is fine -- I'd told them I'd wanted to hover around 32 to 38 per week when I started. We've also lost a few people -- two recently gave their two-weeks-notice, one went on a two-week vacation, and one broke their ankle and won't be back until mid-September -- and it does make for some thin days here and there, but we make do when and where we can. Unfortunately this meant that for a few days this month I had to close, which was NOT fun, as we close at 11pm. OOF. I'm usually already in bed and sleeping by that time! Still, it seems to have balanced out as the only odd hours I'm doing now is the 11:30 to 8pm midshifts one or two days a week to fill in on another person's days off. I'm not the biggest fan of that shift but its not entirely hellish...just exhausting sometimes. I'm not holding my breath...but I am hoping that my boss has the scheduling a bit more under control so it's not so out of whack. And that I can take Sundays off!

Speaking of which, I did in fact get today off, and we took the bus up to Japantown for a sushi lunch, some manga and Pusheen plushie purchasing, and a bit of walking as well. All this while the SF Marathon is going on just a few blocks away from our apartment! The bus schedules were a bit wonky but not completely out of commission, so that wasn't a problem. It's been a very nice couple of days recently so I'm quite happy we were able to get out and frolic!

Hope everyone has a lovely week!

jon_chaisson: (Default)
Woo, I had today off! I've had to work Sundays for the last couple of weeks due to people being out and while I'm not actually doing extra hours, it is kind of screwing with my personal time. Thankfully that person is now back from their vacation and things are sort of back to normal. [Unfortunately a different coworker seems to have fractured their ankle via an episode of inebriation, so my hours are still a tiny bit wonky. Not as frustrating, but just a bit off.]

Meanwhile, the new PC is up and running at top speed, which means I really should get back to my writing work. I've been very bad at following through lately, but now there's no real reason not to jump back in. I'm still up in the air:
--Do I finish off and revise the Queen Ophelia project? It's about 95% done but needs a lot of work.
--Do I finish off and revise Theadia? It too is about 95% done and also needs a lot of work.
--Do I outline and start the sequel to In My Blue World? It's my best seller and I'm sure readers will enjoy another episode of Meeks Sisters Adventures.
--Do I outline and start the romcom idea I've had in my head for the last year or so? I have a rough outline but it needs a lot of work, plus I need to work at getting my brain back into that style.
All this is while I'll be working on MU4 project, which I know will be a long-term one that may not see the light of day until sometime next year. I'm taking my time on that one.
What I'm doing now is reading what I have of all of them so far, to see what resonates with me the most. We shall see soon enough.

In the meantime, we've just gotten back from a five-mile walk around the neighborhood and I now have to do the laundry, so I'm going to relax a bit before I decide on anything!
jon_chaisson: (Default)
OOF. My fellow bookkeeper forgot to tell me he was taking today off so I had to wake up at stupid:early AM three days in a row to open the store. Thankfully Sundays are slow and I had some low-key paperwork and filing that kept me busy (and "busy", as in "imma sit down and not work the register for an hour or so now, thx"). Got home a short time ago and I have tomorrow off. Also thankful that I only have one midshift this week. The downside is I'm doing an opener shift the next day so I might not be completely awake, but again -- day off after that day as well!

So what am I doing tomorrow? Well, aside from chilling for a bit, I might head to Japantown in the afternoon. I'm debating whether or not to go see the new Spiderverse movie while I'm there...we'll see what kind of mood I'm in tomorrow morning. Either way, it's been a while since I've visited and I need to get my manga fix again. I'm torn between having lunch at Izumiya (okonomiyaki) or Izumi Kaiten (conveyor belt sushi), as I've been having a hankering for both lately!

Anyhoo...going to take this downtime to get caught up again!
jon_chaisson: (Default)
Aaaaah. I have not slept until 8am in AGES. Mind you, we did get awakened by Jules and Cali jumping on our bed for pettins, attention and morning kibble but it felt REALLY good to turn over and fall back asleep. I really needed that.

Yesterday we went to the de Young Museum to see the Ansel Adams show and it was quite lovely. It's one thing to see his black and white pictures of Yosemite on the ubiquitous calendars in a book store...but it's quite another to see original large prints and even a few of them superimposed on currently-shot panoramas! And I only recently found out that he literally grew up at the end of my street, and the house is still there!

Today we don't have much planned other than to go see Mary Poppins at the 4 Star around the corner, do some laundry and for me to call my mom and wish her a happy mother's day. Like I said, I haven't had a truly relaxing day in quite some time so I'm just going to embrace it. :)

jon_chaisson: (Default)
Yay, I have Sunday off for the first time in weeks! Yay, it's a lovely day with nary a cloud and no chilly crosswinds blowing down the Avenues! I wanted to go to the farmer's market at the other end of Clement as we hadn't gone in months, so we did! It's still kind of early in the season so it's not completely in full swing, but we bought a half-flat of strawberries for snacking, breakfast and ice cream making purposes, along with new tomato plants for the kitchen window (in which we are hoping that Jules does not notice them and/or think they're food). I stopped by the pet groomer's up the street to say thanks to the cat adoption team where we got Jules & Cali and donated a pack of cat treats. Carrying a half-flat of strawberries (six small baskets) plus two seedlings is kind of awkward, so we took the bus home. Nothing too exciting, but it felt really good to get out for a walk and see what's in season!

I spent the afternoon cleaning and vacuuming, and was actually surprised there were only four cat toys (read: crumpled-up paper balls) under the couch this time! The kitties do NOT like the mysterious tall and thin growling monster and hid in the kitchen with A until I was finished. I gave them treats afterwards to calm them down.

And yay, I have tomorrow off as well! I do need to call the Honda garage to set up a time for the recall thing -- I think it's a small computer update thing by the looks of it -- but other than that, I'm probably just going to chill, do the laundry and maybe some more cleaning. And WRITE, because I've been lazy these last few days!!
jon_chaisson: (Default)
Last week was a mixed blessing: it was all opening shifts, which I love...but I found myself exhausted by the end of it. Part of it was due to being short-staffed at work (two people calling out sick on certain days, slim schedule on others), and part of it was an uptick of customers. Which is fine, except that quite often it was either one-at-a-time (another appears in line just as I'm finishing up with someone) or dead-dead-dead-NINEATONCE surges. And one of the days I pretty much ran the entire front end on my own with only occasional help. This week's upcoming schedule is a bit odd in that I have three mid-shifts in a row followed by two opens, all in a row. I'm hoping it won't be too overwhelming.

Meanwhile, today was one of those Best Laid Plans days in which we came back from brunch to learn that one of our hot water tanks in the basement broke somehow and a replacement would be coming...maybe tomorrow or Tuesday?...which means getting laundry done was nixed. Which also turned into an afternoon of laziness in which I didn't even get around to vacuuming the apartment. D'OH! Oh well. I have tomorrow off so I'll take our stuff to my favorite laundromat down the street midmorning, then hopefully I can get some of the house cleaning done afterwards!

Oh! And I brought both cats to the vet this past Thursday. Just a general wellness checkup / vaccine update, and I'm quite happy to say that both Cali and Jules received a clean bill of health! The only drama there was getting Cali in the cat carrier, which eventually included me throwing my sweater over her, dropping her in the carrier and then pulling my sweater out. She was NOT happy about that...but they've since forgiven me and are both doing just fine.

Hope everyone has a nice week ahead!
jon_chaisson: (Default)
Well, shortish at any rate. I've been working Saturday mornings at the shop (part of my bookkeeping duties) but it gets me out at 1pm so I still have the rest of the day to do whatever, even if it's doing errands and whatnot. And considering that our building's washing machine is still not working correctly (it should be fixed this Thursday, last I heard), I spent part of this morning kicking back at the laundromat to do our laundry while A stayed at home to make apple sauce and wait for a package from IKEA. Which alas contained broken items, but they should hopefully be sending replacements soon.

What about the writing, though? Yeah, I've been kind of distracted by other things this past week and hardly got anything done other than some cutting and pasting, but I'm hoping I can rectify that this coming week. Granted, part of last week's schedule contained three midday shifts that didn't provide all that much time for me to work on MU4, but this week's is much better, with only one midday shift and the rest all mornings.

Still, I need to get my butt in gear, because this novel ain't going anywhere without me putting in the work!

Road trip

Feb. 12th, 2023 07:10 pm
jon_chaisson: (Default)
Today we drove down to the IKEA in Palo Alto for various home-related things. The weather was quite nice for the most part and we haven't done any major road trips lately, so why not? We may have spent a bit more than expected, but it was worth it. One of the major things was to get new dishes, as we've had our old fiesta ware once since we moved out here in 2005 and they're getting quite worn. We also got a duvet cover in the hopes that this will keep Certain Destructive Kitties from further destroying our comforter, and a few storage bins for the kitchen and Spare Oom. [I bought a standalone wire mesh storage thingie that I can put under my desk as I have lots of space under there. I figure that'll clear up the desk space a bit as well.] On the drive back we took the main surface roads instead and though it took a good hour and a half or so, it was worth it!

Meanwhile, I have been told by the landlady that our washing machine is borked (I think the agitator is broken as it popped out of place when I was using it the other day) but it won't be fixe for another week due to the usual repair team being booked up. Which means that I'll be spending tomorrow morning (I have tomorrow off) heading over to our local laundromat again. The good thing is that I can use multiple machines and it'll take much less time, so if I do it in the morning I'll be back before lunch. Which means I'll have to think of a few writing-related things to do while I'm at the laundromat instead of goofing off online. I'm all caught up with the Trilogy reread, so maybe I'll read What I Have So Far of MU4 instead...? Or maybe go over what notes I have so far? We shall see.

Of course, this also means tomorrow will also be partially spent putting the two IKEA items that need building. That shouldn't take long, however...!

Weekending

Feb. 5th, 2023 07:34 pm
jon_chaisson: (Default)
So this week I got a 'workiversary' cake at the shop, celebrating one year since my hire date. It's a simple petite white cake with white frosting and very tasty. Our bakery makes some really good cakes, y'know. So much so that I'm amazed I'm not putting on weight from the occasional slice-buying for lunch. Still...has it been a year already?? I started mid-March of 2022, but apparently my hire date was late February -- I do remember my boss saying he'd been backlogged with eight bazillion different things going on, and I've since learned that he does appreciate the occasional reminder when needed. Anyway, we are having cake for our dessert these last few days and I am happy for it.

In other news, we went to Japantown today and finally stopped at the bullet-train sushi bar across the street from the Japantown Mall, and we were not let down! We both realized that this was definitely a place to bring visiting friends and family that enjoy sushi! We did of course stop at Kinokuniya so I could pick up my manga stash, which I shall start reading soon enough.

Oh -- did I mention we got new pillows? We finally came to the conclusion that our cheap and deflated BedBath&Beyond-bought pillows have just about had it and it was time to admit that maybe we should spend a bit of money to get something that's comfortable and supportive. I seem to have slept very soundly last night, so that's definitely a good sign.

Writingwise I'm a few days behind on MU4 and 750Words due to work and other IRL things, but I'm not going to let that bother me. In fact the days off have given me time to think about a few important character-related things that I shall implement very soon. Looking forward to working on them!

Hope everyone has a good (and much warmer) week!

At the moment the Day Job has settled into a schedule that allows me Saturday afternoons off as well as the entirety of Sunday, so we've made our weekend plans accordingly. And given that we've been lucky with the weather for the most part, we've been out and about! Yesterday we made our way over to the Botanical Garden as the magnolias are just about to bloom (it's still a bit early so not all of them were out yet) then stopped at the Richmond Republic (one of our favorite local alehouses) for dinner. And today we visited the Haight for the first time in ages, checking out some of the nicer houses off the main drag and visiting some of our favorite stores as well.

It's still a bit cold and it rained late in the afternoon today, but it does feel really good to get out again!
jon_chaisson: (Default)
And did I get any work done today? NOPE! Not a sausage. That's okay, though. I got to see Kiki's Delivery Service at the Balboa and had an extremely sugary slice of birthday cake and an extremely greasy burrito with chorizo for dinner. And the weather was just lovely! I'd already gotten my birthday present from A earlier in the month (the Revolver Super Deluxe box set, yay!) so today was just a 'let's just have a fun and relaxing day off' sort of day.

Meanwhile, I have a few things on my mind aside from my work on MU4 so that's also why I've been MIA online lately. Nothing terrible, just decisions to be made and steps to be taken is all.

Hope everyone has a lovely week!

jon_chaisson: (Default)
I've got a two-day weekend here (off today and tomorrow) so I get to a) sleep in despite being woken up by cats, and b) catch up on things without much interruption or lack of time. A's parents will be coming in early this afternoon for lunch which means that I spent most of this morning post-coffee with vacuuming and tidying up (see: cats again).

In the meantime, I'm sneaking this entry in while A finishes cooking before I finish cleaning/bringing down the trash/etc and doing my weekly PC cleaning.

I'll be honest, I've been feeling kind of guilty for not being all that productive with the writing, but I've told myself not to be swayed by that. I'm allowed a few off days, especially at the end of the year! Besides, I'll most likely be catching up on the blogging later tonight after A's parents head out. I just have to remember, it's not about feeling guilty for not writing...it's about preparing myself for the next writing project phase!
