You know, I used to like the Strokes, until I noticed:

--there's no bass in Julian Casablanca's vocals. It's all treble.
--Dudes, the 70s NYC junkie look went out in the mid-70s.
--[livejournal.com profile] emmalyon and [livejournal.com profile] lynxreign pointed out that they're a "C+ band". In other words, they're doing the minimum, but not trying any harder. I think this video is testament to that. ;)

That said, however...DJ Freelance Hellraiser did a brilliant job back in '02 mixing their also half-assed "Hard to Explain" with Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" for one of the best mashups EVER.

You know it isn't the best thing you've ever eating, but somehow it's classic, somehow it's exactly what you want. This is generally how I judge music, to be honest. The concept may not translate to another set of ears.

I totally understand where you're coming from, and I'll be the first to admit that I have very contradictory tastes in music. After all, I embedded an NSYNC song and posted a link to the Spice Girls a few days back. ;)

There's also the issue that I may be taking this meme a bit too seriously--I don't know of any band/song/album/etc that I "hate"--that is, something I can't stand to the point of needing to throw the radio out the window before I hear another note.* I chose to use the word "hate" in this particular meme to mean a band/song/album/etc that really does nothing for me at all, or used to and doesn't anymore.

With the Strokes, I don't exactly hate them, and I'll listen to them when they're on the radio, just like the White Stripes, because the songs are okay, but I don't hold them in the same regard as I used to. I don't hate them, and I don't actively dislike them...they just don't do anything for me anymore, simple as that. ;)

* - The only exception to this was hearing Billy Joel's "Piano Man" on the local classic rock station at work EVERY FRIKKIN' DAY for three months straight without fail. I've since recovered, and can hear it now, as long as I wait another six months for another listen. ;)

And I still hold the fact that the vocal mix grates on me because there's no low end to it at all. Again, don't *hate* it, it just hurts my ears. The Chili Peppers' Californication, while a great album, has the same problem for me--very trebley to the point of distraction. ;)
