I have informed [livejournal.com profile] emmalyon that I would like to try my attempt at making my own Irish Coffees. This sudden urge came from two places--one, from going to Tiernan's today and listening to a lot of reels and jigs on the stereo, and seeing a Modern Marvels episode about whiskey. Having never attempted it before, this is going to be like my Cap n' Cokes--a lot of trial and error, and my tastes are probably a lot, er, stronger than they should be when it comes to liquor.

So! That being said, I'd like to go with the creamier Irish Coffee that the Buena Vista is so famous for rather than the more-whiskey-than-coffee kind that was served to me at the SF Opera House (although I'm sure that was the fault of the bartender, not the mix of choice).

Any suggestions/preferences on the ingredients used before I go and buy them? We were thinking Canadian Club due to the fact that they're a)cheap, b)a good whiskey for mixes, and c)pretty much everywhere, but we're open for anything...

[Yes, [livejournal.com profile] head58, I used that subject line just for you. ;) ]

I like Canadian Club better than Seagrams, yeah.

And I laughed out loud when I saw the subject. I actually thought of that line Tuesday night, when I was kind of sloshed while watching the returns.

Yeah, thought you'd enjoy that. And you weren't the only one thinking of it that night! :p

Hey Jonc, are you Irish at all?

I don't remember the connection entirely, but I'm part Irish on my mom's side...I think my grandmother's parents were of Irish descent. I forgot how many generations back it was!

Here's my foolproof recipe.

One cup of coffee (choose your favorite, of course. Bonus points for grinding the beans yourself)

One shot of Irish whisky (Note the lack of an "e". It's an Irish thing. Also, note that single-malts are way awesomer than blends. I recommend Tyrconnell, but Bushmill's in the green bottle will do in a pinch)

Pour coffee into coffee cup. Pour whisky into mouth. Chase with coffee. Repeat until sufficiently Irish.

Note: I am 1/4 Irish; my maternal grandfather, a Rooney from the County Cork, emigrated to Edmunton, Alberta in the 20's. I am therefore entitled to make Irish jokes.
