To the Mormons and the Christians who funded and pushed Proposition 8's disgusting religiously based agenda:

HOW DARE YOU.

HOW DARE YOU even deign to assume that my marriage to [livejournal.com profile] emmalyon was threatened because of two men or two women who love each other enough that they want to be married.

HOW DARE YOU take someone's deepest wishes away and say "you can't."

HOW DARE YOU assume--wrongly--that this would affect schools.

HOW DARE YOU assume--wrongly--that the state I grew up in is doing something WRONG by letting gay marriage happen.

HOW DARE YOU assume that your religious beliefs are the ONLY way, in this multicultural, multiracial, multireligious day and age.

HOW DARE YOU.

Whether for good or for ill, we live in a country where, for now, states get to make individual decisions on gay marriage and sometimes more people who are willing to vote on the issue go a way different than what would seem to be the best path to many others. There will come a time when it will either be overturned, or the US as a whole will make it protected under the US Constitution, but just as the country had to suffer first under Jim Crow laws before electing a Black President, we will have to suffer under some of the current laws springing into being before things change.

One of the things hardest to accept in this country is the fact that they dare because they have the right to do so. That is what the process is for and the solution for people such as yourself is that if you feel strongly enough about it you have the right to try and change things to where you think it should be.

Wow, sorry, stood on a soapbox there. Just to clarify, I support gay marriage as a protected all men are equal (pun intended) situation. :)

Understood and I agree with you that they have the right...

...it's the fact that it was such a closed-minded proposition that pisses me off. ;)

Dude, all the Mormons are trying to tell you is that marriage is a sacred institution that's defined as being solely between one man and one.....ummm....

Thank you for expressing how I feel.

I am very disappointed in California right now. :(

Now this is a political sentiment that I can get behind. I'm glad to live in a state that doesn't ban gay marriage. Especially around the idea that religious doctrine rejects it therefore it must be right. As Ian, a friend here says, religion is used as a thin veil for discrimination. If only religion could be banned...

And:
HOW DARE YOU spit on the Constitution - our founding document that not only separates Church and State (TWICE!) but affirms that every citizen is equal under all of our laws and that neither the federal government nor the state can change that. Burn in the hell you have made for yourselves.
