Computer woes. Still. :(
Oct. 4th, 2008 09:16 pmOkay, so on the offchance that it was the printer, I went out and bought a rather nice one on sale at Best Buy tonight, and went to install it, figuring that would update whatever went wrong...
aaaand, nope.
I can't install the printer.
Something got effed up on this PC, and I'm not sure what it is. According to random Microsoft sites and error messages that come up, it's either the Remote Procedure Call not working, a random .dll not working, or the spooler is all shot to hell.
*sigh*
I'm going to start this again tomorrow. I've wasted most of the day trying to figure out what the hell is wrong and not getting anywhere.
Of course, any suggestions, short of throwing said PC out the window, would be helpful.

Date: 2008-10-05 05:35 am (UTC)1. Power off the printer
2. Click start, control panel, printers & faxes and delete the printer.
3. Re-install the printer with the original driver disc.
If that doesn't work, try this:
Go to System Properties>Advanced
Select Performance>Settings
Select Data Execution Prevention
Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select
Click Add
Paste this in to the file name box of the window that opens:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe
Select Open
Select OK when you receive the warning
Select Apply

Date: 2008-10-05 06:06 pm (UTC)Have you tried a system restore on a point prior to the printer problems?
Other than that I can only think to reformat the hard drive after you've backed up everything.
Hopefully head58 has some better advice than that though.

Date: 2008-10-05 06:51 pm (UTC)And I REALLY don't want to reformat the hard drive. That would suck very much and I have way too much stuff to back up to want to go that rout. :(
I'm going to try a few other things, though, see if that works...

Date: 2008-10-06 12:57 am (UTC)I always look at Windows going south as just a reminder that I should be backing up my important stuff more often.

Date: 2008-10-06 01:15 am (UTC)There's also the fact that, like I said, everything else on Windows is acting completely fine, so that's why I'm
thinkinghoping I don't have to take that desperate of a step. The annoying thing is that I don't think I have a reformat/reinstall disk, at least one I can find readily, if it comes to that. But at this point I'm not going to worry about it until I get back from vacation.
Of course, saving all my really important things like writing and random mp3s on the externals would probably be a good idea too. ;)
