California State Fair: The Pictures!
Sep. 2nd, 2007 05:22 pmRandom Pictures for your pleasure...

The front gates at CalExpo in Sacramento. Despite the heat, it was a lot of fun walking around the place. And they had this neat thing in which one of the parking lots looked like one ginormous carport, except that the covering was actually a bank of solar panels. I should have taken some pictures of that too...
Our first stop once we got in: eating! In which we stopped at:

Chicken Charlie's! Which is known for frying EVERYTHING. Including Coke. I'm not quite sure how that works, but I decided not to try. However, there was a delicacy that seemed disgusting yet somehow tasty at the same time...

Words fail me. And yet...

emmalyon has a picture of me enjoying said delicacy. As she says, it's something that could only be thought up while 'faced, and I definitely agree with that. I have to say it was good in a disturbing way, even if it was quite messy.
We polished that off with some:

...chocolate chip funnel cake! And no, neither of us could actually finish it.
And then, it was off to the animals!
First, we check out the farmyard...

I meet an alpaca! This dude was extremely laid back and not camera-shy at all.

Yes, you read that right. They went there with that joke. So here's my (somewhat blurry--sorry about that) response:

The title of the picture? "Hay, Ewe." For the record, the ewe's name is Bummer. :p
And onto the livestock barn:

Llama llama there's a llama...No lie, there were a bajillion llamas in this barn. Not to mention a bajillion sheep as well, but curiously very few steer, like this longhorn with OMG BIG HONKIN' HORNS...

..and a select number of pigs, most of them passed out like these guys:

...with the occasional attentive one (this one, who thought his trough was a candy bar, has been LOL'd by me, entitled "Nom Nom Pig Haz a Bukkit"):

...and a lot of Masked Sheep of Mystery, like this guy (again, sorry for the blurriness):

(I'm guessing they're wearing stuff like this to keep them warm, as many of them were being shorn at that point in time. Even on a hot day, I'm sure they might have gotten a bit chilly in the coolness of the barn.)
[EDIT: I was just informed by
emmalyon that it had nothing to do with warmth, but to keep them clean! :p ]
And finally, onto the crafts, agriculture, and history areas!
I didn't really take too many pictures at this point, as it was getting a bit too hot and there wasn't much I wanted to capture. Of note was a "fur and feathers" exhibition of birds and other animals (including an absurd number of chickens) in the same area, which was neat in its own way. And there was also a building I swear was CalExpo's version of "It's a Small World After All", substituting the word "State" for "World". This is the animatronic section
emmalyon talked about in her previous post. Strangely enough we didn't find the San Francisco section, unless it was hiding on us. Unless SF's contribution was the sourdough bread/fried dough stand in the corner...?
As said, not too many pictures here, but I'll at least share a picture of the giant cornstalks (easily about ten feet high, possibly more), which I now have as my computer's wallpaper (of course titled "Wallpaper of the Corn"):

...and that's about it!
And after that, we kinda sorta went way out of our way for an early dinner at the original Taylor's Refresher, which is up in St. Helena. Here's some pictures of the place from the last trip back in early August...

...and that's it for now. Good thing we have tomorrow off...we're still tired! :p

Date: 2007-09-03 03:42 pm (UTC)I have pictures of some stands selling equally sketchy things. And, in true CA fashion, there was also Thai food. At a fair??
