You drove HOW many miles?!??
Jan. 20th, 2006 09:12 amDrove down to Fremont last night to meet up with a few writing friends at a coffee shop and had a lot of fun. It was a pretty straightforward drive, only had to remember two major exits and a few intersections and that was it. The amusing thing, though, is that they were all kinds of shocked to find that I'd driven all the way down from San Francisco, which is about 39 miles away. Why I'd go out of my way--leaving during going-home traffic, mind you--to visit a few friends kind of surprised them.
All I could say was that living in western Massachusetts for so long, driving around 40 miles to go anywhere was par for the course. And besides, it only took a little over an hour, all told. It would have taken less if I hadn't hit nasty traffic downtown, but what can you do? And the drive back was very quick, considering that I was heading back at around 10:30 at night.
My only problem coming back was the fact that I was looking for the Harrison St. exit off the Bridge when in fact IT DOES NOT EXIST. I should have taken the Fremont Street exit (which is its correct name), but ended up taking the 9th street exit, ended up somewhere in the Tenderloin, found Market Street, tried to take a short cut and ended up fouling that up. Thanks a lot, Google Maps, you bastards! :p That was fun, driving up Taylor Street and suddenly realizing that I was scaling up Nob Hill...good times, good times...took a side street, ended up on Kearny (where I wanted to be in the first place!) and found my way home minutes later. I wasn't so much lost as not where I really wanted to be, so I guess it's a good sign that I'm learning the streets here rather quickly. :)
Again, I say: I'd like to meet the guy who thought that cross streets in San Francisco was a good idea, and ask him what kind of drugs he was on. :)
One last thing: Apparently the other day was considered the 15th anniversary of the Sea Lions making their new home at Pier 39. Yay for my neighbors! :D
