Just heard that Showcase Comics in Hampshire Mall is closing!! WAAAHHH!!!! :( Actually, they're not so much closing as consolidating with their Springfield store where they apparently get more customers. GAH! No more zipping down 116 after work to pick up my weekly geekfest of comic greatness. Well, I could actually go to the new shop down the road that Grover and the ex-Showcasers opened a few months ago (hey [livejournal.com profile] cell23, I know you're down the road...do you go there? If so, has it improved since opening?)...or go to the comic store in Greenfield that my dad told me about. *sigh* This sucks.

I went to that store a few weeks ago. Sidekicks - right next to Stan the Vegetable Man. I was...unimpressed. The tool behind the counter was ranting and raving the whole time about what an asshole Bendis is and that he (Bendis) was up there at some panel at Comicon saying how great he was and bashing DC's president or something. Called Bendis a "fat bald no talent loser."

Now, I have issues with some of bendis's writing, but this guy was pretty much just being a Comic Book Guy stereotype. I looked up the stories about the panel at Comicon (you an find it on Newsarama. too lazy to link), and Bendis was nowhere near saying what this guy was describing. Plus, Bendis fat? buh?

It clinched it for me when he complained that Bendis's books were too wordy, and that he likes to be able to finish a comic in the time it takes him to eat a cheeseburger.

Now, I don't know if this guy was just part time help or a manager/owner or what, but his attitude really put me off going back. Also: their tpb selection was for crap (and, coincidentally, missing all the Bendis Daredevil volumes, and nary a Powers to be found).

Modern Myth in Noho on the other hand is always well stocked and has amazingly friendly and helpful staff. And you can just shoot down 91 to get there. That's my vote.

Sounds good to me. My friend Leslie lives not too far from the place and she'll give me directions. Thanks!

I guess I'll just have to get used to shlepping all the way down to Noho. I haven't been down there in ages. This, of course, will give me a valid reason to spend money I won't have at Turn It Up. Feh.

Yeah, go to the one in NoHo. They're a decent store.

Showcase is in fact already closed. For maximum possible enjoyment, I also recommend going to Modern Myths. Sidekicks is a decent store, but Modern Myths has class up the wazoo, plus they are one of the few stores in existence to sell physical copies of The Other Side (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=486&products_id=2634&), so I of course must shill them like a bitch.

Already closed?!?? ALREADY CLOSED?!?? THOSE BASTARDS!

They left a message for me yesterday that said they were closing, but made no insinuation that they were vanishing into thin air. And they still had a copy of the Complete Bone on order for me. FEH! I liked the store enough, and the guys who ran it were cool (if a tad on the Comic Book Guy side), but this sudden dissapearance just cheeses me off. This would probably explain why they were selling back issues for 50% off ("...until we feel like it," the guy said when I asked how how long the sale was for) and liquidating as much product as possible. I should have seen that coming...

So hey--I'm guessing MM has a subscription-type deal like Showcase did? I'd be so happy if they did. Most of the titles I get are easily found, but there are a few I can never find (The Norm, Blue Monday, and the Shadow Star books for starters) until well after the fact.

And if I go down there, of course I'll pick up The Other Side. I can flash it around at work and say "I know the guy who made this," and they can all call me a geek and laugh at me.

Oops, did I just say that? :p

Yeah, anyway...thanks for the tip. I may just hold off on comicage for the next two weeks just so I can pool all my money for Noreascon. I'll pick up what I missed this week at Comicopia anyhoo when I'm in Boston.
