Things completed over the last few days:
--Flu shot received
--4th Covid booster received (side effects minimal, maybe a few aches and that's it)
--Food shopping done
--New releases listened to/downloaded
--Fee/donation to adoption agency for two (!!) cats (more on this in a few) paid
--Cat toys, litter box, food dishes, and other fun things purchased
--Cat tree purchased and built
--New cat carriers bought and original purchase returned
--VOTED! Will mail the ballots tomorrow before work!

Things fallen by the wayside:
--Writing. WELP, I figured it would happen anyway considering I just had ALL THE THINGS to do and I'm a bit distracted by the preparation of the arrival of not one but two kitties. Yes, two! After having the face-to-face-online interview with the agency, we both thought that considering the original cat we wanted (Jules) was from a litter of four, we'd be fine with taking on one of her sisters (temporarily named California). But anyway...yeah, I've had a few distractions lately so I'm fine with that. I kind of needed it as I'm feeling a little worried about where I am in Theadia. I don't think it's bad, but I'm having one of those "I'm too close to it and probably need to back away before I fuck it up" waves and should probably take a mental break from it for a tiny bit. And amusingly enough, Althea has mentioned in the book itself how a cat is the perfect distraction. Heh.
--750Words and Inktober. Again, same distraction, but I'm not letting it bother me. For the former, I'm not taking it too seriously and just working on a sort-of-new story idea and playing with the outline. For the latter, I've already done it twice already and caught up quickly. I'm not doing ginormous detailed art here, of course, but doodles. Essentially my outlook for both has been "it doesn't have to be consistent, as long as I get back to it." A few days off in between is fine.

Things to come:
--Awaiting word from the agency as to when said kitties will arrive or be brought home.
--Dropping car off at a garage after work tomorrow to have some work done on it.
--One of A's friends is coming to visit next weekend and there may be some transportation hiccups, but we shall see.
--Getting back to writing work.

Yes, I took an extra week off from blogging because I wanted to think a bit more about what I wanted to do with my writing. I've come to the decision that while I'll continue with the weekend update here on DW, I'm dropping the WordPress blogs down to once a week until further notice. This is primarily because I need to focus more on novel work and Day Job searching and planning. Just enough to keep the blogs consistently updated without me driving myself crazy digging for ideas. As for the novels, I've been averaging around 650-700 words a day, which is terribly low by my standards but at least I'm getting somewhere. I can get higher word count, but I'm not going to force it. It'll come eventually.

I also cleaned off the whiteboard again. Yes, I always flip-flop on that thing. It's helpful but it can also be a hindrance. It reminds me of what I need to work on, but it also stresses me out when it starts feeling like a strict deadline. So I'm going to try something different here: I have a clipboard hanging next to my whiteboard that hasn't been getting much love over the last few years, which will be used as a non-deadline Things To Do List. I already have my list of stretches and exercises here, so I can add a list of creative projects, errands and whatnot.

In other news, for some unknown reason I can no longer connect my Pixel phone to my PC to empty out the pictures (something I've been doing for years, moving them to the PC hard drive and backing them up on an external). It's weird because it's only my PC where this happens; it'll charge up the phone, but won't read it. My laptop can still read it no problem, so now when I move the pictures I need to move them there then transfer them to my PC through Dropbox. It's a pain in the butt but it's the only way I can think of doing it right now until I figure out why this doesn't work. My Dropbox is like 'what the hell are you doing' and the syncing doesn't know if it wants to spend a few hours or a few minutes screwing around.

[Which reminds me...I really need to get that non-working external over to the PC shop up on Geary to see if they can save what's on there. I don't worry about the music that's on it, but some of my personal stuff and my older pictures are on it.]

Other than that, not much else to report...we've been having weird winter weather as of late so we haven't been outside much lately, and A has been busy with Day Job stuff so it's been kind of unexciting here. I still need to work on nailing down a decent exercise/yoga regimen, but that shouldn't be too hard to do. And hopefully the weather won't misbehave too much in the coming months!

Hope everyone has a lovely week!

Eep! Been awhile since I last updated here. Let's do a recap:

--Been a crazy busy year for me, personally and otherwise. I have wanted to work on side projects, but many of them have stalled for no other reason than I've been focusing mostly on the Trilogy revision during the week and the Blogging the Beatles posts on the weekends. I haven't really been able to work on anything during downtime at work (such as the 750 Words or uploading pictures/poetry), simply because there hasn't been any downtime lately. Things are finally quieting down, however, so perhaps it's time for me to jump back in.

--Speaking of pictures...I've been having a hell of a time trying to upload pictures to not just Tumblr but my WordPress blog, but I'm beginning to think it's an IE quirk. The uploads work just fine on some days, but stall others. I was able to upload just fine on Chrome, so perhaps I should utilize that browser for visuals from now on. For the record, I'm not an IE hater...it has its issues, but 98% of the time it works just fine for me, so I see no reason to abandon it. The only issue that remains is figuring out how to tweak the pictures I've taken with my phone--about half the pictures I take are showing up as upside-down or sideways when I try to upload them to Tumblr or elsewhere, and it's a pain in the butt to tweak them. Lastly...I may have been looking at low-end cameras that are a step up from my current one. I'm not actively looking to buy one at the moment, but I am window shopping. I do get some neat shots from my current camera, but I'd really like to take some more professional-looking pictures as well.

--With other side-projects, I'm hoping to get into the music thing again right soon. I finally broke down and bought the newest version of the NCH software at Fry's [the famous computer/appliance store down in Palo Alto where all the original Silicon Valley computer nerds have always gone to--it's a lovely ride and takes you past the Stanford campus too]. I plan on installing the software in the next day or so and working on that project on the weekends. As mentioned much earlier, the current iteration of my solo music work is going under the name of Drunken Owl...I just need to start working on the songs in my head now!

--As you might have noticed, I'm in the home stretch on the Blogging the Beatles posts. I've got two albums and a small handful of singles left to go before I'm done with the series. So what will I do from there? Well, since I had such a fun time working on it, I'm thinking I'd like to go over a few albums and discographies of other bands in a similar fashion. I did a few previously (like the Love and Rockets 5 Albums review), and would like to cover the some other classic alternative albums. I think the next non-Beatles post may be about the reissues of We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It!!'s two albums that came out earlier this year--they're an interesting duo of albums worth checking out.

--The Great Trilogy Revision Project is moving ever forward. I'm a little over halfway through Book II, which means I'm right about at the halfway point for the trilogy itself. That's saying something, considering I started this major revision late last year. I'll go into detail on that in another post later on, but for now I'll just say that I'm quite happy with the outcome. I'm also looking forward to finishing it up so I can truly start working on a new main project--something I haven't done in a few years, come to think of it! Not sure what it'll be, but I have a few contenders. As for the trilogy...I have sent out a few queries to agents and may send to a few publishing houses as well, and have yet to hear anything back as of yet, but I'm fine with that. I'm also keeping the avenue of self-publishing open as well (and yes, I've done my homework in that direction)--more on that in a later post too.

--Art! Geez, I've been so busy on the weekends that I've let that one slide again. I need to jump back onto the schedule of working on that as well. Plug in the ol' Wacom and work on the drawing. I would like to try a bit of blue-penciling when I have the chance, but that might be a little further down the road, maybe in the new year. For now it's working out the drawing kinks and relearning how to draw.

So yeah...it's been a busy year, but it's also been quite the creative and productive one, and I'm happy about that. We're on the last quarter of the year, often the most productive time for me, as well as the time of year when all the great new music releases come out (coincidence? I think not!). It's the home stretch, and I'm not going to let it slide.

Oof. Why do I get the feeling I've gone off track somewhere? Not in a bad way, just let go of the reins while dozing off or something. I haven't lost track of what I was doing, nor have I left various things to the absolute last minute and rushing to get them done. Maybe it's that I'm just not stressing myself out over things that need doing. Is it just being tired of getting stressed? Is it my doctor saying my blood pressure's a bit high? Is it me just not giving a shit anymore about certain things? Could be any and all.

Anyway.

I think it's partly that I've been letting a lot of the secondary writing projects and exercises fall by the wayside lately--more to the point, I've been focusing exclusively on the revision of The Persistence of Memories, and the Blogging the Beatles series on the weekends. It could be that I'm currently not finding the poetry or the journaling all that important at the moment...not that I've grown out of it, just that I don't really have much to say at this time.

I'm thinking part of that is due to my gradual stepping away from social media. I still enjoy popping in and seeing what's up with people, but I think the excitement of 24/7 connection has lost some of its lustre for me. I like the connection, I just don't need it every five seconds...especially when I'm keenly aware that it was starting to interrupt my writing time. There's also a bit of saturation online in general, just seeing a lot of message echo going on, and have been ignoring that as well. And I feel a very small portion is also having grown tired of forced immediacy...getting the news first, getting in the funny joke first, that Everything In the World Is Important AT THIS MOMENT. It's not. Life goes on within you and without you.

In short, I'm slowly but surely returning myself back to the level of internet time I had about ten years ago, where it really should be. Just reshuffling priorities a bit. That's the big one.

Also trying to start a habit of creating a real To-Do List instead of keeping it in my head. I should know by now that I have a writer's memory: focused on the task at hand and having a pretty decent recall of specific things...and yet forgetting more mundane bits here and there. Giving myself a weekly/daily check-off list seems to have worked in the past, plus the whiteboard writing schedule works for the most part, so it won't hurt to write out a physical To-Do List for once. Lord knows I have enough scrap paper around to do it. And lord knows that if I post about it here on LJ or on Twitter, it'll get lost in the noise and slip my mind.

So! That being said...I made this list yesterday, it's got 5 items so far, and one of them (cleaning out email, I was about two weeks behind) is done. I'm hoping I can get a few of these done today just to get them off my mind. A few I may do this weekend when I have more time and am not interrupted by Day Jobbery. The main aim is not to constrict myself with Things I Must Do, or overwhelm myself with I Must Do ALL the Things--it's just to get myself in a little better order. :)

Things done today:
--Lunch at Rogue (mmm, Chocolate Stout... :) )
--shopping at store for random stuff
--laundry
--dry-clean my brown coat
--run various cleaners on my computer
--recharge my Dana
--check personal inbox on work laptop (98 emails, for those keeping count)

Things still to do:
--possible RTS post
--charge up Zune/put more tunage on it
--backup writing files on thumb drive as well as on J drive
--go to bed early :(
jon_chaisson: (Default)
In kinda sorta order:

--shower, get dressed
--drop off stuff at library
--mail rent check & NetFlix dvd
--shopping at Target/Lane Bryant/Mervyn's (if it's still there)/Kohl's
--do laundry (doing now)
--watch football Lions/49ers game!
--maybe do some writing [CFMWH outline, among other things]
--double check jury duty website because I'm weird and need to triple-check things like that
--contemplate putting a little more structure in my life and errands by creating a schedule instead of doing things when I remember to do them :p

ETA:
--Two pairs of cheap jeans and a polo shirt at Mervyn's for $38! WIN!
--Bought a few mesh letter trays at Target, hopefully this will give me more room on the desk and make things a little more organized. I'm all about the organization lately.
--Thinking of cleaning out desk drawers. There's too much crap in there. I should probably also clean out my bedside table too...too much stuff in there collecting dust too.
--For later in the week: drop off the random computer hardware I don't need at Green Citizen. Just the random cables and the wireless keyboard/mouse setup that crapped out on me a few weeks back.
--Also later in the week: GET THE CAR CLEANED. And also: REMEMBER TO COVER IT NEXT TIME. And also: get a reciept if possible, as Trinity still owes me a cleaning due to the bird dookie. ;)
