Outages!

As it happened, my store lost power about a half hour before I was about to log out and head home, and the last time that happened it was hyperlocalized to maybe a few grids in the neighborhood, but on the way home I noticed it seemed a little more...widespread than usual. A few major intersections had no lights, and several workers were standing outside their shops, waiting for the power to come back on. Thankfully, our house hadn't been affected at all (I'm convinced it's because the school across the street is on a different grid than most of the rest of our block, and we're lucky enough to be on it).

That is, until about 3pm when it went out.

And stayed out until 9pm last night. It's usually never off for THAT long, and that's not a good sign. And some sections of our part of town are still out, apparently.

Long story short, it looks like there was a fire at a substation over in the Mission District -- clear across town, mind you -- that caused a cascading fault and power outage of epic proportions. And not only that, the phone service didn't seem to be working either, other than the occasional PG&E notifications. It's still only at 2 bars right now, when normally we get 4-5. So whatever happened, it must have been pretty bad.

And of course, the PG&E outage site is still showing possible outages around us. Fingers crossed that it doesn't crap out again!!

So last week for the hell of it I looked on the Seagate site just to see if there were any external drive sales going on, considering the one with my music library was swiftly approaching critical mass, even despite my attempts to thin it out. As luck would have it, they were indeed having a sale and I purchased a Ridiculously Large External (14TB, almost double the other big external I have, and for a surprisingly cheap price at that). It's taken a few days and a few snags, but said music library has now been moved with lots of breathing room surrounding it. Right now I'm updating the Plex server so it's pointing towards the correct location so it can be shared again!

Meanwhile, we're finally gathering all the artwork we want to put on our pristine white walls! We've been using a prints-from-museum theme for a while now, so we've been buying a few from the local museums (and a few from the MFA in Boston) and elsewhere. Alas, I've run out of the specific size of hooks I need, so I'll need to swing by a local hardware store to pick up more, but eventually we'll be all arted up!

We are now completely moved into our new home, and have been spending the last several days unpacking, setting things up, putting things away, and ensuring the cats aren't too freaked out by their new surroundings.

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to feel a wave of melancholy when I left the old apartment yesterday after picking up the last of the leftover things I had to bring over. And again today when I left the keys and the garage door opener on the kitchen counter. It felt...well, sort of like when I moved out of my parents' house in 2005, now that I think about it. A little over fifteen years in the same place and it becomes a strong part of your history, I guess. We were only at our apartment in North Beach for just shy of four years and it took me that long to get used to our last place.

But yeah, walking out of there for the last time was definitely a trip. Lots of memories, lots of life events.

There's still a lot to do, even though we're mostly settled now. The shared office needs things put away, the garage needs a LOT of rearranging and organization (and the two storage shelves built at that), and we still need to do a bit of grocery shopping.

It's slow going, but we're getting there.

As of last Saturday, Emm and I have been living in San Francisco for ten whole years. That fact just occurred to me the other day as I was reading the local news on SFist.

Wow, ten years! We barely escaped winter storms before we left early on that Monday morning on December 12, one of our friends driving us to Newark Airport. Emm was busy with multiple work-related travel engagements, so it was basically on me to find us a decent starter apartment, which we eventually did a month previous. We'd done a major culling of our belongings before the movers came; I let our New Jersey friends dig through a goodly amount of my cds that I would not be taking with me (no worries, I'd already ripped them to my PC by that time). I'd sold my car to a local garage and we relied on carpooling until the transportation company came to take it for us.

In a way it was more of a tabula rasa for me than the move down to NJ was. I'd been a New Englander my entire life up to that point, so a move to the opposite coast, starting a new (and newly married) life, and even taking a new track on the Day Job front, was probably one of the bravest things I'd done to that point. I really had little to no idea what the future had in store for me. I mean, other than me continuing on my writing. And even that was in flux; I'd pretty much stuttered to a halt on all projects and had to start over from scratch. [Shades of ten years earlier, when I'd moved back home in '95 and had to relearn how to write. There's a good chance this was the same situation.]

How do I feel, now that I've been in this city for a decade? Well, have to say I still love it here. Never a dull moment. A few frustrating ones here and there, just like anywhere else, but for the most part I've come to see this city (and most of the Bay Area) as home turf now. I feel like a local now: I know my way around, I understand the moods and the movements, I have favorite corners of the city, and I have not gotten sick of driving around this area at all. I may not have close friends here, but I have a lot of acquaintances. We've become regulars at some of our local stops. And damn it all, it never stops being so picturesque! :p

ITEM: Feeling better this evening, which makes me happy. I still feel tired as hell, even though I did nothing but watch TV and occasionally play around on the internets. I may or may not write tonight, depending on if I have the energy. Work did pop into my head every now and again, but I tried no to feel guilty for not being there (that's my own damn fault for having that sort of work ethic).

ITEM: Sweet! Free shipping on Land's End stuff until Thursday! Good timing, since I'm planning on ordering this coat, as I want to get a coat that's heavier than my raincoat but lighter than the brown one I have.

ITEM: I'm contemplating unplugging for a few days/weeks from the internets, as it still seems to have its talons in me, thanks to the pre-election entertainments. It's not so much an "I-need-more-time-to-write" thing as it's the fact that I just need to step away from everything and calm my brain down for a bit. I'll probably still email/LJ, but not as much. I'll let you all know what/when/how.

ITEM: AP just called it for Begich over Stevens. w0000t!

ITEM: Note to self--use up this month's eMusic downloads before Saturday!

ITEM: Had some interesting ideas the other day regarding the subplot/main plot that's going on in Can't Find My Way Home. I may have to do some heavy thinking to see if it's doable, but these new ideas may just help me finish off the outline and make the story that much better.

ITEM: Also concerning CFMWH--Some of the chapters I've already written out may be substituted or at least rewritten, which means that stand-alone shorts may be in the cards...

ITEM: I'm already up to Chapter 7 on the A Division of Souls reread/rewrite/preparation-for-website. So far I've noticed one chapter that can be smooshed in with a different chapter (or two), which will make the pacing better. If memory serves, I think this switcheroo is actually how it originally was before I divvied up the chapters differently. More on this later.

ITEM: Though I'm still sleepy, I'm feeling quite hungry right now, which I think is a good thing and a sign that I'm feeling much better. Not exactly completely better, but more so than last night. And [livejournal.com profile] emmalyon is making pork chops and potato pancakes tonight! Yay!

ITEM: Okay, that's enough for now. I'm going to see if I have the oomph to write now. :)

Glad to hear you all got home in one piece. I've done that route more times than I care to remember, so I feel your pain.

Now go climb under those blankets, fire up the hot chocolate topped with marshmallows (or Fluff if you're so inclined) and warm up!!!

Oh, and if it's any consolation, we have idiot drivers out here too. Many of them unclear on the concept that driving fast during peak hours and/or on wet pavement is not the best of ideas. *headdesk*

Why am I happy? [livejournal.com profile] emmalyon is coming back home from NJ! Yay!

btw, this news completely makes up for the fact that most of my callers today seemed to be a bit slow on the uptake (one call taking 45 minutes--let's just say she not only needed a Spanish translator, which we had, but also a logic translator as well. *sigh*)

But yes--Emm is coming home! w0000t! :)

[NOTE: I find that Sundays are perfect for me to do some introspective writing on various things, as a)neither Emm nor I have anywhere pressing to go right away, and b)I really need to more writing of some kind. I want to see if I can make it a habit of writing an RTS Presents article more often, perhaps once a week or every other week. We'll see...]

Okay, so dealing with the "Ubseshun" I'd posted about a few days ago, about the Yahoo Music News article questioning whether getting rid of singles back in the day was a good idea or not.

The article itself is an interesting diatribe about how the advent of downloading songs has pretty much replaced going out and buying the single in the music biz. First of all, I have to say that in all honesty, the change was so slow and deliberate that it wouldn't surprise me if not a lot of people would have immediately made that connection. Sure, some may have thought that with the ever-increasing presence of downloading sites and programs like iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, MusicMatch and so on, they could just snag the one song rather than going to the local record store and buying the whole album.

My take on singles and music underneath the cut )
