What's up

Not much, really. I'm currently dealing with what's either a head cold or allergies that's been leaving me congested and tired. Which is bad timing, considering I have a few days off to do whatever I want or need! Bleh.

Sunday was a bit on the lazy side, as we didn't really do anything until almost noon when we went out for a walk, checked out the dahlia garden in GGP, then had quite a tasty lunch at the Velo Rouge Cafe on Arguello. We'd been meaning to go there for ages, and it was definitely worth it! Once back home, we ended up lazing around, and I got to finally watch the first three episodes of The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, an anime whose manga version I've been obsessing over lately.

Still, by the time I sat down at the desk, I was just too tired to get any work done or even write any blog posts. Bleh, I say! So yeah, that's why you're seeing this on Monday morning. I have very few plans today other than to rest up and catch up. Hopefully I'll be back up to speed soon!

...this anime was released in Japan:

...and thousands of science fiction fans the world over had their minds completely blown. It's so highly influential it didn't just reset the bar on anime production, it inspired thousands of other animes, films, and stories (and even a Kanye West video). I highly suggest watching the movie at least once if you haven't already. It can be a bit squicky at times (trust me--that guy getting shot in the trailer above is actually pretty tame compared to the climax), but if you watch it purely from a storytelling perspective, you'll marvel at the level of worldbuilding detail as well as the unconventional storytelling.

I mention this, as this movie was one of the inspirations for me to start writing science fiction and fantasy. I was never that big of a fan of the genre (or of anime, for that matter) until I saw a friend's copy in college around 1991. I was completely blown away not just by the level of animation, but also by how detailed and how far they could take a story. I'd also found a few collections of Japanese horror/SF short stories at the local library and ate them up because of this film. From there I'd start renting out other anime from Tower Records and still consider it one of my favorite types of animation. Much of it was primarily for the entertainment, but ultimately I would study these movies for their methods of storytelling as well.

Katsuhiro Otomo didn't direct that many anime films (Memories, Steamboy and segments of Neo-Tokyo and Robot Carnival), and he's done a few other manga series, including Domu: A Child's Dream, The Legend of Sister Sarah and the original AKIRA (the movie was based on what he had of it so far, so it's not exactly note-for-note but more of an extended and more psychological story), but all of them are definitely worth checking out.

"Cosmic Child", ending credits theme to the anime Gall Force 2: Destruction, by Takako Shirai & Crazy Boys.

translation below the cut )

During the winter of 1993, having just graduated college and living in a shoebox apartment on Beacon Street in Boston, I was pretty much on my own and at the very start of figuring out what the hell I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I wasn't in the best frame of mind (having lost connection with quite a few friends and not having many in town), and had nothing to show for my four years at Emerson, aside from aborted stories and screenplays.

One of the things I did to pass the time was rent out videos from Tower Records--specifically anime, something I'd been interested in but never followed up on. I pretty much schooled myself on various movies and shows that I'd heard of but never seen (or saw only briefly), such as Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Akira, and so on. One of the titles that caught my eye was Gall Force: Eternal Story, It's not a big-name anime (although the character design is by Kenichi Sonoda, who worked on many 80s animes such as Bubblegum Crisis), but I'd like to think of it as the little anime series that could.

Long story short, it's humans (called "Solnoids" here, and all female) vs their mortal alien enemy (the liqueous "Paranoids", playing the male, natch) in a seemingly never-ending fight for dominance. What the lead characters don't know, at least not right away, is that a secret meeting between the two races have created a project that would finally unite them in peace. The twist is that this story focuses more on a group of Solnoid cadets attempting to keep this forced unity from happening; and finally, once they realize the outcome could save them all, protecting this new "offspring" on a pre-human Earth. This storyline stretched from this movie to two OAVs to an additional three story arcs taking place over the course of many centuries. I was intrigued by its worldbuilding, and its unique take on a space opera/Alien/Creation Myth story.

I bring this up because this was the series that pretty much opened my eyes to science fiction, and changed an overworked Infamous War Novel into a completely new and fresh story called Vigil. Admittedly, this version of the story didn't go too far, but it was the seed that would end up becoming the created world of the entire Eden Cycle universe. In particular, it was this song that inspired me to start toying with the idea of aliens being related to us humans in a very distant way, what that meant to those here on Earth, who would be for it and who would be against it. That idea never made it to Vigil, with that story focusing instead on the titular underground hacker group I'd created--basically the original characters of the IWN dropped into a science fiction plot. Nonetheless, I finally picked up that alien-relation idea in the next version, True Faith...and you know the story from there. That was it--a tired, overworked, trunk novel I'd toyed with since the mid 80s, given a new life and a new universe all because of one anime series, specifically one of its ending theme songs.

Yes, that was an ELO reference. Why? Because the other day I realized I had two days before my monthly 50 eMusic points expired. Strangely enough I was just thinking I was woefully missing a lot of Electric Light Orchestra, a band that I grew up on. Out of the Blue is still on the list of one of my all-time favorite albums, and one of their best. I now have nearly everything they have--I ran out of points before downloading three of their albums and their remaster release extra tracks. I'll be doing that this weekend.

That said...

(The famed DAICON IV opening night animation. ELO's "Twilight" (said reference in subject line) starts at 1:30. Further proof that either ELO and anime is awesome, or I'm definitely an otaku. :p ) (Oh, and this video is why I love GAINAX so much. :) )

Oh, and

We're going to see this at the Kabuki this weekend. Quite possibly one of the most mindbending yet impressive animes (yes, even more so than AKIRA) I've seen...I'm curious as to how this one will look on the big screen. Hopefully not as squicky/disturbing as the last third of episode 18 (SO totally NSFW...).

YAY!

I gots anime coming! Just got an email from Amazon saying their stuff from their Anime Sale is on its way!

First: The complete box set of Paniponi Dash!

This one ranks right up there with Bo Bo-Bo-Bo Bo Bo-Bo in sheer volume of silly WTFness. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but it's funny as hell. I can only watch a few episodes before I start getting headaches from laughing so much. :)

Secondly:
complete box set of Ergo Proxy:

WTFness in a serious, meta sort of way, and still not entirely sure what it's about, but we rented this via Netflix and I LOVE it. Also? Episodes named after Douglas Coupland novels. And also? BEST. THEME SONG. EVER. (And also also? Brilliant move using Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" as the closing theme. ;) )

And third:

Tokyo Godfathers...another brilliant work by Satoshi Kon. Now if I can just get around to finding a cheap copy of the Paranoia Agent series, I think we'll have most everything of his available in the US...

YAY for anime! :D

Yeah, we pretty much passed on going to Amoeba today. Being that we finally got to uninterrupted sleep sometime around 1am, we're both too lazy to do anything other than some necessary errands, most of which we've already done. No big, we'll go at a later time...for now, some random updates:

--Most likely will go to Borderlands on the 18th (two Saturdays from now), as [livejournal.com profile] jaylake is going to be signing there and I really want to pick up Green.

--As said, nearly all errands done. Just need to do laundry, vacuum the apartment (which takes all of ten or so minutes to do--the good thing about a small place!), and run the dishwasher.

--I'm not sure, but I think the people across the street--you know, the guy I talk about who stands in front of his window for hours on end, either staring or talking on his phone, and I swear he's watching me--look like they're moving out. I can't be sure, but there seems to be packing going on in that apartment.

--In a related note, the quiet, unassuming woman that lived next door to us (not the couple across the hall) that we've only ever seen in person maybe three times since we've been here, seems to have moved out as well. We can see into her apartment from one of our windows and it looks empty.

--Also related, I'm seeing a strangely large number of empty apartments here. But to be honest, this is normal this time of year, when all the kids move out at the end of their college year. On the plus side, I've seen our management showing people apartments all the time, so at least business is moving.

--One of our local channels played How I Won the War last night. I'd forgotten just how absurdly weird this movie was... :p

--Amazon's having an anime dvd sale! YAY! Going to order the Paniponi Dash and Ergo Proxy box sets!

--I just started reading The Lord of the Rings, after not picking up the books since 7th grade (and even then, I didn't get far). I find it a bit unnerving that I found myself geeked out by the "Notes on the Text" and author's foreword about how he wrote it? I haven't even gotten to the novels themselves yet. And why do I get the sinking feeling I'm going to feel all this nerd love for the books? This may or may not be a good thing... O_O

--If I have the time, I may post a few more [livejournal.com profile] edencycle chapters. I'll let you know when I do. :)

That's it for now. Hope everyone has a swell weekend! :)
jon_chaisson: (Naruto shocked)
I'm wondering what Cartoon Network has up their sleeve, if anything.

I pretty much gave up watching Toonami's Saturday night lineup after they dropped most of the anime titles (and when Naruto went into the less-than-stellar "filler" episodes between the series finale proper and the sequel (Naruto: Shippuden) premiere. So it comes as no surprise that I completely missed the story of Toonami calling it a day back in September.

I used to love watching Toonami. Back when it was a daily weekday block in the early evening, I'd bogart the TV and watch Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star and anything else they played. It was awesome, finally having a lineup of anime I could actually watch on TV. Living in a small town, there really weren't any video/dvd rental outlets (read: no Blockbuster) that had anime I could rent. For awhile it was part of my daily schedule (come home from work, watch Tenchi Muyo, have dinner, then go downstairs to write for 2 hours), and I loved it. It didn't stay forever, but it sure was fun.

Later on I found out about the late-night scheduling of anime, but never watched much of it until I moved in with [livejournal.com profile] emmalyon. That's when I really got into the Saturday night lineup...Naruto, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, One Piece, and any of the crazy miniseries they played later on like FLCL or Cowboy Bebop.

Now?

Naruto. And that's about it.

Okay, to be fair, all the anime is now being played on Adult Swim, like it did back in about 2004-2005, before Toonami got big in the early Saturday night lineup. Still, with the current lineup, only about half of the lineup appeals to me. I think what bothers me about the rest is that a lot of titles that get broadcast in the US nowadays kind of blend into each other, theme-wise. Many of them are variations on demons (it's not an episode unless the Earth's destiny is on the line), vampires (sexually ambiguous vampires at that), or ultraviolence (check out the blood spatter in this scene! shiny!). I've seen a few, I know how the rest go.

It kind of makes me wonder just where I need to go to get my anime fix. Which I find deeply ironic, considering I live on the same block as Viz Media. Seriously--most of the anime we've been watching the last year or so have been titles on our Netflix/Roku list, or recommended to us by friends, books, or the media. Granted, I like the fact that we can watch these things at any time when we rent, but at the same time, I miss watching it on TV. Even the anime we used to watch on ImaginAsia is gone--not the anime, but the channel from our lineup. It's as if the cycle is heading back to where it was about ten years ago...back in the late hours, waiting to be recorded by fans.

It could be that I'm still a bit of an animation snob. I still find anything Filmation touched to be absolutely horrific and needs to be burned STAT...I still think Disney's okay, but not my thing...I still think the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons are the BEST THING EVAR and very influential in my formative years...and that most animation nowadays could be so much better than it currently is. Ever since I saw Siskel and Ebert review Akira back in 1988, I was convinced that Japanese animation was far, far superior than anything else I'd seen. Sure, I'll admit to really liking a lot of non-anime stuff out there, but I'll be honest, anime always gets my attention first.

So where do we stand now with anime? Where is it being shown? I know for certain that Cartoon Network is continuing to show random series online via Toonami Jetstream, but what about those of us who either don't have the time to watch streaming video, don't have the greatest internet hookup, or just don't like watching stuff on our PC? I mean, aside from watching fansubs and fandubs on YouTube? And if it's not currently out there as much as it was...when is it going to come back? If at all?

Ergo Proxy is coming out as a complete box set in October! w0000t!

Very weird anime, but I found myself really liking it. And the theme song ranks up there with L'arc~en~Ciel's "Ready Steady Go" as one of my all-time favorite anime themes:

Yep, already added to my Amazon wish list!
jon_chaisson: (Tenchi & Ryoko buh?)

I posted this as a comment in one of [livejournal.com profile] chaoticmoth's posts, but I figured it merited its own amusing post, since it's so well done. See how many you recognize! :p

Okay, so due to the fact that we've been checking out a few cons (Stitches and WonderCon) this weekend, and then watching multiple episodes from the Naruto Uncut dvds, I've been lax on the writing. Not that I'm frustrated or annoyed. I have to force myself to have days off now and again, actually...

Anyway, this weekend has been a wet one, since it's been raining sunny raining cloudy RAINING over the past few days, and I've been fighting off a cold that I probably caught from a coworker last week, so we're most likely going to be hanging in the apartment for most of the day. Emm has some work to do, as do I, so we'll keep ourselves busy. I have some chapters I want to attempt to finish off (I'm a little behind on LLB so that one may not be finished...but ADOS Chapter 2 is very close to done). Plus I want to play around with some ideas for the New Project. And perhaps look into a few freelance things I saw on craigslist a few days previous.

....

Other than that, I have to say my MusicMatch has mysteriously disappeared. Or should I say that a particular component has disappeared, so I'm unable to run it. So, after much frustration (and a very long and strong love/hate relationship with it), I'm going to back away and try something else, just for now. I downloaded MediaMonkey to give it another try. I would need to tweak it a little bit to get it to work how I want, but for the most part it's not that bad. Still in the market for a MusicMatch-style player, though. Will see how it works out.

....

I'll work on that promised RTS article about "classic hits" sometime today as well. Quite possibly after I finish off my coffee, take a shower, and finish up a few other things. :)

....

I had a weird idea while showering the other day...I was thinking about how one would go about setting up a wiki online. More specifically, a discography wiki. Even more specifically, a discography wiki that's more streamlined and less multi-country than Discogs, and more along the lines of a rather good listing as on Wikipedia (I think Depeche Mode's listing on Wikipedia is a really good and thorough example). And, perhaps in an interesting twist, being able to look up release dates and seeing what came out on a certain day. That would of course entail some pretty serious research, especially when it predates the Tuesday Release Day setup...but still, it would be a fun thing to put together. Perhaps when I have WAY too much time on my hands, I'll start it...

....

Okay, I have to ask--anyone watch the two Naruto episodes last night? If so, is it just me, or were the two large sumo-looking guys come straight out of either One Piece or Teen Titans, and have the voice of Chip and Skip from Camp Lazlo?? I know Part I of the series is essentially over and they're doing a number of filler episodes before Naruto: Shippuden starts, but this is a rather weird way of starting them...

....

Okay, that's it for now...more with the RTS article later...
