[meme] Day 04. A song that makes you sad
Jun. 13th, 2010 05:38 pmNot as sad as it used to, but Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" came out at a very low point in my life and hit a little too close to home at that point.
Came in from a rainy Thursday
On the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV
And the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you
What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart
What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Here today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk
And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Every one
Is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one
Is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one
Is my world
Every one
Is my world
...so yeah. This song was big right about the time I graduated college. Normally I'd be happy about that, and to an extent I was, but at the same time, socially and career-wise I was in a shitty limbo. I'd lost touch with nearly all my friends, my academic work wasn't nearly up to snuff, I was depressed as all hell, and I had just broken up for the final time with my first long-time girlfriend. I was going nowhere, I was broke, and I was in exactly the opposite place that I hoped I'd be in when I started college. I was alone, pissed off, angry at myself, and feeling like a complete failure.
In a way, this song was not so much a feeling-sorry-for-myself song for me, but more like hearing someone tell me the brutal truth, whether I wanted to hear it or not. I had to move on, whether I wanted to or not. Took me a few years, but I did it. ;)
That said...I can totally listen to this song without a problem now, and it's probably one of my all-time favorites of theirs.
