Oddly enough, I can't think of too much that changed or happened personally to me in 2003...for the most part, it was a continuation of 2002 in terms of my own goals and events. By then I'd just finished off The Persistence of Memories and was working on its revision/rewrite, as well as starting to write The Process of Belief. Work was...well, it was work. After a great year or so at YC, things started changing...our boss Mike (who was probably the best boss we had, IMO) left to go back to his first love, running a restaurant. A few people left and weren't replaced by new hires. And of course when Q4 came around, temps were scarce until it was nearly too late. Things were still okay, I still got along with a lot of friends...but I could tell things were slowly changing.

I'd say most of my music choices by this point were fueled by suggestions from CMJ and other magazines, continuing my insane amount of purchases at Newbury Comics, and listening to Yahoo's Launchcast. I did listen to a bit of radio (including WAMH, of course), but for the most part it was either Launchcast or hearing stuff being played at Newbury. I'd say that while there were a lot of great albums out in 2003, it felt more like a transitional year for me...not all the albums stuck or stayed with me, but there were a lot of GREAT singles. Hence the huge list of videos under the cut. ;)

Puffy AmiYumi, "Planet Tokyo" from Nice, rel 1/22/03

Very fun album from very cute Japanese pop stars! Right about the same time the Teen Titans cartoon getting big...the album has the theme song on it!

The Postal Service, "Such Great Heights" from Give Up, rel. 2/18/03

Another great song from Ben Gibbard. I find it quite amusing that UPS (and not USPS) is using this song for their commercials... ;)

The Ataris, "Boys of Summer" from So Long Astoria, rel. 3/4/03

BEST. COVER. EVER. 'nuff said.

Linkin Park, "Breaking the Habit" from Meteora, rel. 3/24/03

I bought this album late in the year, mainly due to this song, and found it well worth buying.

+/-, "Trapped Under Ice Floes" from Holding Patters EP, rel.4/15/03

Sure, the video's a throwaway, but it's a great driving song. One of my faves of the year.

Blue Man Group w/Tracy Bonham, "Up to the Roof" originally from The Complex, rel. 4/22/03

Another album I don't listen to nearly as much, but has a lot of kickin' songs like this one!

P.O.D., "Sleeping Awake" from The Matrix Reloaded soundtrack, rel. 5/6/03

Say what you will, I really did enjoy all three Matrix movies, and they all had great soundtracks. And okay, I admit that the series may have had a slight influence on my trilogy, but I kept it in check...

Radiohead, "Wolf at the Door" from Hail to the Thief, rel. 6/9/03

I don't think this is an official video, but it's well done, and it's my favorite song off the album. I admit I'm more of a Bends/OK Computer fan and not big on their later stuff, but this album had its good moments after the weirdness of their previous two.

Razed in Black, "Share This Poison" from Damaged, rel. 7/1/03

Driving song of the summer--I think I blew a speaker with this one...LOVE the ending to this one!

Jane's Addiction, "Just Because" from Strays, rel. 7/22/03

Great comeback for a band I was into back in high school...this album was worth the wait.

Elbow, "Ribcage" from Cast of Thousands, rel. 8/18/03

Definitely in the top five best albums of the year (and in the top 10 of the decade) for me...especially this song, which has that "slow build" I always love. I believe this video was from the dvd that came with the original cd.

UNKLE, "Eye for an Eye" from Never, Never, Land, rel. 9/22/03

VERY disturbing video, but a welcome return of one of my favorite electronica collectives. Extra points for sampling The Thin Red Line (as did Explosions in the Sky about this time as well...).

The Netork, "Joe Robot" from Money Money 2020, rel. 9/30/03

No, this isn't really Green Day. No, really, honest! ;)

Belle & Sebastian, "Step Into My Office, Baby" from Dear Catastrophe Waitress, rel. 10/6/03.

Who knew that twee could be so x-rated? ;)

Other videos:
Stars, "Heart" from Heart, rel. 2/11/03. Never a huge Stars fan, but this is a great song, very romantic in a sad sort of way.

Kelli Ali, "Sunlight in the Rain" from Tigermouth, rel. 3/4/03. Former Sneaker Pimps singer's debut album...no official video for this song, but it's a beautiful track and one of my favorites of the year.

Cave In, "Anchor" from Antenna, rel. 3/18/03. I listened to this album quite a bit while writing in the Belfry...good rockin' stuff.

Placebo, "The Bitter End" from Sleeping with Ghosts, rel. 3/24/03. Another writing soundtrack album, and on the top ten of that year. I keep forgetting how much I love this band!

Fountains of Wayne, "All Kinds of Time" from Welcome Interstate Managers, rel. 6/10/03. Quite possibly the most beautiful song ever written about football... :)

Sense Field, "I Refuse" from Living Outside, rel. 7/22/03. I got into this band just as they decided to break up, but they're well worth looking for, especially this album.

Thursday, "Signals Over the Air" from War All the Time, rel. 9/16/03. Never big on scr-emo, but this one called to me...great late summer song to crank up while driving.

Jet, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" from Get Born, rel. 10/7/03. Why the official video is nowhere online, I'm not sure...but this was the song of the year for me, as well as the album being in the top five of the year. One of those HOLY CRAP THIS ROCKS! sort of songs in a year where a lot of stuff seemed to be more laid back.
