Okay, this is one of those "seemed like a good idea on paper" sort of local laws...

I could get fined if I light a log in my fireplace during a Spare the Air day. Granted, two things are for me here--one, it rarely if ever gets godawful-cold here, and two, we rarely if ever turn on our heat, so I think we can use it now and again.

On the one hand, I love the idea behind the Spare the Air days they have here--most of the time they're during the summer and a lot of people make their way into the city via BART or bus rather than driving in. If the Transporation Authority can afford it, they'll even make those free days on the BART and MUNI. And to tell the truth, our city is actually a lot cleaner air-wise than it used to be, according to ten-year reports...

On the other hand, though, having Spare the Air days during the winter might be an okay idea, but I know there's a lot of people out there who might end up wanting to use their fireplace (if they have one) instead of turning on the heat, because let's face it--it's probably cheaper. Or, like us, why turn on the heat when we rarely do anyway?

And of course, if you read the linked story, Duraflame (which I forgot was local!) is kind of annoyed by the law, being that cold days are their bread and butter!

So yeah, like I said...one of those "seemed like a good idea" sort of things... :p
