"thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one's on me."
Free and legal, yo! :)

Date: 2008-05-06 07:07 pm (UTC)I haven't heard the new one yet, but I've heard the single "Discipline" and if it's anything like that, it should be okay...it's kinda tough to use any one of his albums as a preview for other albums, as he does vary (and wildly at that). ;)
Maybe this will help:
Pretty Hate Machine: first album, kinda poppy German industrial, kinda tame now but still good. Still a fave of mine.
Broken/Fixed EPs: Err...yeah. You might want to wait on these until later. These are pretty harsh.
The Downward Spiral: Probably his best album...pretty dire, but it's one of those you have to listen to all in one sitting and just be blown away by it. ;)
The Fragile: Too long, could have been better, but has its really good moments...
Still: Live album. Could go either way.
With Teeth: Back to the poppiness but updated and actually a good starting point.
Year Zero: I'm mixed on this one...it's good, but didn't grab me.
Ghosts I-IV: all-instrumental album, good for writing sessions, and probably a good sampler of what his music style is like.
Can't wait to hear the new one! :)

Date: 2008-05-07 03:23 pm (UTC)re: "The Slip": I'm loving it, though some parts more than others. "Lights in the Sky" I find hard to listen to, because Trent in sad mode impresses me beyond my powers of comprehension, while simultaneously making me realize that my own life is completely worthless (I *am* exaggerating here, but, still, it's more of this kind of feeling than I like.) I think "Echoplex" is a great song, "Discipline" is a lot of fun, but less artistically stunning ...Actually, I'll shut up for now, will be happy to blab more, if you want.

Date: 2008-05-06 07:46 pm (UTC)w/r/t your ranking of the albums, I disagree about Broken - I feel that's probably his tightest and best work to date. Loud and angry in a way that's different from much of his other stuff, but it's pure and mature in a way that the rest of the catalog lacks. Adolescent lyrics are my main gripe about the stuff I've heard from WT and YZ. Even Downward Spiral has a couple pieces that I cringe to listen to the lyrics.
And a couple of the remixes on Fixed are good, but for my money you want the UK release of Further Down the Spiral, because of Heresy (Version) which absolutely rocks my world.
Also, Still is the live Joy Division album. You're thinking of All That Could Have Been. Shame shame :) (and I like that one, except if you play a game where you drink every time he adds an additional "fuck" to a song you'll be dead of alcohol poisoning by the end of side one)

Date: 2008-05-06 09:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's the one I'm thinking of...I have the extended version with a bonus disc called Still, so we're both right. :p
I have to agree Broken/Fixed is good, but I probably wouldn't recommend it to someone who hasn't heard NIN before. ;)
