I nearly plotzed when I first heard Haunted. Then I nearly plotzed again when I heard House of Leaves had ties to it. Both are some of my all-time favorite pieces of media. ;)
I truly love about a third of Haunted, but I agree the ties to House of Leaves are what make it such an engaging experience. I just wish I could snip out some of the filler songs. The title track is an astounding piece of music, though; still gives me chills when I hear it.
HOL is the only book that ever creeped me out so badly that I had to periodically put it down and walk away. I've had to buy it three separate times - once after my copy fell apart after reading it, once when my husband read it and it fell apart, and then one we now keep on a shelf and never touch...for fear it will fall apart. For a book that required such "active" reading, you'd think they would have bound it a helluva lot better, no? I'm pretty anal retentive about books, so it's not like I was manhandling the thing, sheesh.
Dammit. Now I have to pull out Haunted and listen to it.
The first time I read HOL I was impressed at how believable Zampano's sections were as a movie dissertation. And because of that I coulnd't help but read it as a filmable book. Awhile back I gave my copy to a friend and bought the "newly remastered" version. It's one of those rare books where I would not feel guilty or stupid at all to buy more than one copy.
Back to Haunted, I agree that there are a few filler songs, but the rest of it makes up for that. Also, I found it quite touching how on a completely different note it's also a very deeply personal ode to her dad...and the fact that she managed to have it both ways is mighty impressive.
