From Locus Magazine:
George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire will be turned into a TV series on HBO, with a projected seven seasons--one season per book.[...] Martin said, "They tried for 50 years to make Lord of the Rings as one movie before Peter Jackson found success making three. My books are bigger and more complicated, and would require 18 movies." Martin will write at least one episode per season.

2) Martin is involved.
3) Martin has worked in TV before, to much success, and understands how TV works.
It's almost TOO good to be true. :)
