The upside of getting a new PC is that everything is shiny and ridiculously fast. I get to set everything up just the way I like it. All my programs will work just nicely.
The downside of getting a new PC is how ridiculously long it takes to make sure I have all the old stuff backed up before I make the change. Sure, a lot of it is already on one of my externals or on Dropbox; I'm mainly talking about things I've saved to the C drive for one reason or another. Then there's the long and rambling list of various programs that I'll need to install -- and yes, I'm about 99% sure I still have all the software disks, or can easily get the latest version online. Then there's the tweaking of the internet connection, rejiggering the Plex server once more, making sure the printer works, making sure my music is playable, etc etc etc...
I'm pretty sure I'll end up doing the move over multiple days, and then holding onto this old PC for a bit (although I'm not sure where I'll put it just yet...) until I know for sure I've got everything updated on the new one and can delete everything off the old.
The PC in question is an HP Envy 750-114. I kept coming back to it while browsing various sites, partly because it was, like my camera, 'a step up' from the regular hardware I usually buy. One selling point today was when I said I wasn't a gamer but did a hell of a lot of multitasking and wanted something that had a lot of processing power. He responded with 'well, normally if you were a gamer, I'd suggest this...but in this case, this is a great business computer too."
Just what I wanted to hear. :)
