I remember hearing this on WAAF all the time and thinking it was one of the most AWESOME songs ever.

I watched the summer of 1995 leave me hanging
And entered the autumn of 1996 thinking
Elsewhere, elsewhen, elsehow

I heard the sound of men and women stuck in stasis
Sickened by the dirty sound, stiffened by their losses
The sounds of guitars calm against the walls
Pearly-made, hard-edged yet listenable
Not quite as angry anymore, not quite as frustrated
(See how they twist and shout)
Now more worldly, now wider awake

And somewhere across that deep chasm of ocean
The sound of those Manchester boys reaching their summit
Singing and dancing, hitting and rocking
Having not quite won the battle of bands and brothers
Expanding their fields and leaving the dance floor
(See how they twist and shout)
And running towards the exits before it's too late

And by the autumn of 1996
I watched all these bands of brothers and sisters
Of guitars and spite, of anger and frustration
Turn on the world to give it its new voice
No more shouting, not for a while longer
Just a song, just a way to pass the day
Just a way to break away from it all
If only for a few moments at a time

One line stolen from The Verve Pipe's "Villains", (c)1996 Sid Flips Music/EMI April Music Inc. (ASCAP)
