Copy this sentence into your livejournal if you're in a heterosexual marriage, and you don't want it "protected" by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow.

Living in California, we get the joy of having to hear arguments about Proposition 8: Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. At this point, the opponents of gay marriage aren't even going for the 'gay marriage is bad' angle anymore. They're going for the 'OMG they're required to teach this in schools?!??' angle. Which pisses me off to no end, because:

1) They say it's Massachusetts' fault, because some kids were taught it in kindergarten through the reading of a kids' book saying it was okay. Which, if memory serves, was a book brought in by a student, not the teacher. And the teacher didn't say no to reading it in class as the student had requested.
2) They (falsely) say it would be REQUIRED TEACHING in schools.
3) They (falsely again) say that such REQUIRED teaching would affect young kids.

Umm, no.

The law states that sex education is NOT required in California. However, in the interest of fairness, if it is taught, THEN it is required to say that yes, homosexuality is a viable personal choice, and it IS out there in the world. NOWHERE does it say that it's required teaching, for young kids no less, that they MUST be taught about sex education or homosexuality.

Also, do I personally have to browbeat every idiot that uses the argument of "if gay marriage is okay, then does that mean I can marry a fencepost or a wombat if I want?"??!??? That has to be the STUPIDEST retort ever. I'd like to think the gay/lesbian people I know have a little more sense than that. Give them the benefit of the doubt, people. And you're only making yourself look dumb, not them.
