I'm still not happy with my writing output at this point. And I know it's my own damn fault. I've been letting myself get distracted again. I know exactly why I'm doing it, and I've already talked about it here, so I won't repeat myself.

So...time to pull out the Big Guns again--the Schedule.

Let's divvy this up into four sections: Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Yearly.

Daily

Word Count:
I haven't actively written down my word count for some years mainly due to the majority of the work being revision, and counting revision words seems kind of like cheating to me. Thing is, I think I need to start counting it, if only to prove to myself that I really am making progress. And I think aiming for between 1000 and 2000 words a night is doable.

Prioritization:
To put this into a clearer perspective, I have four completed novels, two of which are currently in revision process: Love Like Blood and A Division of Souls. I'm prioritizing these by revisiting the schedule I had at the beginning of 2011: two days dedicated to each one, Mon-Tue for one and Wed-Thu for the other, with Friday reserved for any catch-up on either one. This leaves the weekend open for smaller and/or newer projects, with plenty of time for Real Life Stuff.

Non-Writing Activities:
At present, I'm going to the gym three or four days a week: Wednesday and Thursday (my WAH days), and the two weekend days. Fridays are a sometimes, depending on when I get home. As long as I'm doing it at least a few days a week, I'll be happy.

Weekly

Productivity, Revision:
I think one of my problems is that I don't have a set deadline on the back end--at present, my writing deadlines are "it's done when it's done." Which is all well and good, considering that I'm committed to finishing these projects, but I think I need to tighten that up. It's time to say "I need to finish this by this date" instead. That said, I think that, at least with the revision process, I need to finish off a chapter by the end of the week. This will mean that those two (or three) weekdays of dedicated work need to be done and tidied up, but I think I can do it.

Productivity, New Stuff:
Any new projects are of course relegated to the weekends at this point, so I'll be a bit more lenient there. I think at least making an acceptable word count is a good start, or better yet, at least finishing off a scene or a section.

Monthly

Productivity, Revision:
It's kind of hard to guage this for revision, considering the disparate lengths of the two active revision projects. As Love Like Blood is the shorter of the two, I'm going to give myself a deadline of one month = one quarter done. As for A Division of Souls, that may take a bit longer, so I'll have to do a bit of math to give myself a good length of time.

Productivity, New Stuff:
As mentioned above, given time constraints, the goal is to make chapter end by end of month is doable.

Yearly

Productivity, Revision:
More on this soon, but I'd like to have Love Like Blood ready for submission by midsummer, and A Division of Souls by the end of year.

Productivity, New Stuff:
Again, more on this soon, but I'd like to have a new project done by end of year as well.

Also:

I love it when I find the perfect book completely by accident.

[livejournal.com profile] emmalyon and I went to Green Apple yesterday for our usual book shopping, and as I walked past the PC/Computer/HTML how-to section, a book caught my eye: Scott McNulty's Building a WordPress Blog People Want to Read. This is EXACTLY what I need to get the WP site up and running correctly. This is one of the weekend projects I'd need to work on initially, just to make sure I have it up and running okay. Once I have the technical side down, then I'll be able to blog to my heart's content. I'll let you know when that's up and running.
