Yipes! I only have a few weeks left to catch up on these...
Hmm. 2006. Kind of an off year, really, in terms of music I was listening to. I spent most of this year working on Love Like Blood, getting acclimated to my new surroundings in San Francisco, and working at my new job. There was also a bit of a change in the sound of indie at this point, with a lot of bands getting little to no radio play but were the biggest thing on the internets. It took me awhile to get used to some of these songs, and eventually I gave up actively looking out for them, leading me to realize that I'd finally outgrown my music obsession to some degree. I still listen to a lot of stuff, and still try out new things, but I'm definitely no longer the five-cds-a-week, listening-24/7 fan that I once was. *sigh* The price of growing up, I suppose. ;)
KT Tunstall, "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", originally from Eye to the Telescope, rel. 2/7/2006.
I totally love her use of looping using foot pedals here. Great song almost on par with an Annie Lennox tune, really...
Snow Patrol, "Chasing Cars" from Eyes Open, rel. 5/9/2006.
Thank you Grey's Anatomy for pushing these guys even farther, but at the same time I'm kind of worried that they're going to fall into that TV show ballad trap. Still, great song, this!
The Raconteurs, "Steady As She Goes" from Broken Boy Soldiers, rel. 5/16/2006.
Sure, you can sing "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" to this song, but Jack White's side project really works well here.
Silversun Pickups, "Lazy Eye" from Carnavas, rel. 6/25/2006.
Damn, these guys are catchy! Got to love a band who names themselves after apackie liquor store. :p
Muse, "Knights of Cydonia" from Black Holes and Revelations, rel. 7/3/2006.
Queen-like bombast? Check. Spaghetti western? Check. Kung fu? Check. Er....unicorn? Uh....check? O_o
Monoral, "Kiri" from the Ergo Proxy OST, rel. 7/19/2006.
I know I've posted this online in the past, but it begs posting again--another one of my all-time favorite anime themes.
The Knife, "We Share Our Mother's Health" from Silent Shout, rel. 7/25/2006.
One of those albums the internet kids were all asquee over when it came out. It's hit or miss with me, but I do like the ordered cacophony in this one. :)
hellogoodbye, "Here (In Your Arms)" from Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!, rel. 8/8/2006.
One of
emmalyon's favorites of the decade, such a happy poppy tune!
Mute Math, "Typical" from Mute Math, rel. 9/26/2006.
This one kept popping up every time we went on a roadtrip when we visited back east, especially on our latest trip to Montreal. These guys rock!
Weird Al Yankovic, "White n' Nerdy" from Straight Outta Lynwood, rel. 9/26/2006.
Oh, come on, how could I pass this one up? Donny Osmond kickin' it, Seth Green slappin' his butt, Python references...heh!
The Killers, "Read My Mind" from Sam's Town, rel. 10/2/2006.
I love this song because A) the vocals sound like the first take, B)it sounds like one of those "end of the day/year" sort of songs, and C)it's such a cute video.
Beck, "Cellphone's Dead" from The Information, rel. 10/3/2006.
I...umm...sure. Yet another typical Beck video that makes no sense whatsoever...
My Chemical Romance, "The Black Parade" from The Black Parade, rel. 10/24/2006.
As I'd said earlier, I find myself really liking MCR for some strange reason. I can totally hear Robbie Williams doing this song as well, to tell the truth...
And of course I had to end on a Beatles note... :)
The Beatles, "Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows" from Love, rel. 11/20/2006.
What can I say? I'm still a major Beatles fan and thought this album was a brilliant reinterpretation of some of their songs. This one's probably the best Beatles mashup I've heard since CCC's "Leave Anna Behind".
Other Videos:
Morningwood, "Nth Degree" from Morningwood, rel. 1/10/2006. Actually, this was released in the UK in 2005 and was another IMF video, but still, how can you go wrong with one of the catchiest earworms of the decade? And the video's funny as hell too. :)
Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Dani California" from Stadium Arcadium, rel 5/5/2006. Again with the theme of emulating past rock imagery. When I heard this incessantly during the summer of '06 it dawned on me that RHCP is to California what Aerosmith is to Massachusetts...you can't go a day without hearing a Chili Peppers song here.
Gharls Barkley, "Crazy" from St. Elsewhere, rel. 5/9/2006. Retro again, but this time with a smooth Motown sound. It's a very odd but wonderful album worth checking out.
Plain White T's, "Hey There Delilah" from Every Second Counts, rel. 9/12/2006. Okay, you can practically hear the composition book with the black mottled cover that these lyrics were obviously written in during your Humanities class, but y'know, it's still a good song. ;)
Teddybears, "Punkrocker" (featuring Iggy Pop) from Soft Machine, rel. 9/12/2006. Can't go wrong with Iggy, even if the song is rather silly...
