Ah, 2005. Quite a few life-altering things happening this year: quitting a job I'd had for nearly five years, moving away from my hometown and down to NJ, getting engaged then married, flying on a commercial airline for the first time, going to Europe--specifically Scotland--for the first time, and to top it off, visiting the west coast and moving to San Francisco. So yeah...if anything, there was a reason why I didn't get too much writing done that year. I was just too busy, in a good way. ;)
[Note: Sorry about the overabundance of links instead of embeds--UMG needs to LIGHTEN UP. X( ]
Bright Eyes, "First Day of My Life", from I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, rel. 1/25/05.
I was never a big Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes/etc. fan, but every now and again he comes out with a brilliant song...and this one comes with a very cute video. I dare you not to be all "Awwww..." at the end. :)
Bloc Party, "Helicopter", from Silent Alarm, rel. 2/14/05
I wish I could find the other video for this song, which is trippy as all hell and the one that Int'l Music Feed used to play all the time.
Doves, "Sky Starts Falling", from Some Cities, rel. 2/21/05
The first of two fake-Edison-film videos from this year. And yes, those are actual flight maneuvers with real names.
Kaiser Chiefs, "Oh My God", from Employment, rel. 3/7/05
Pretty much my theme song from this year, considering... ;)
The Decemberists, "16 Military Wives", from Picaresque, rel. 3/25/05
Quite possibly the poppiest anti-war song this side of "Randy Scouse Git", and heavily played on K-Rock out of NYC when I was temping at PwC, scanning reports.
Span, "Cut Like Diamonds", from Vs. Time, rel. April 2005
Another IMF video. I love the dropped-tuning on this song, makes it grittier.
Garbage, "Bleed Like Me", from Bleed Like Me, rel. 4/11/05
This was a great return to form for the band, and a very strange video to boot.
Kawada Mami, "Radiance", orig. from the Starship Operators anime OST, rel. 5/7/05
Wow...didn't know there was a real video for this! Didn't know about this anime until about 2007, but it's surprisingly good for a sci-fi space opera. Well worth checking out.
Alkaline Trio, "Mercy Me" from Crimson, rel. 5/24/05
Another IMF video...animation is the last thing you expect from a punk/emo band, especially in this day and age, but this one's very clever and catchy.
Motion City Soundtrack, "Everything Is Alright" from Commit This to Memory, rel. 6/7/05
Wonderfully odd and strangely catchy, and some of the funniest lines about paranoia!
Death Cab for Cutie, "Soul Meets Body" from Plans, rel. 8/30/05
I don't care what the Pitchfork wannabes say...DCFC writes some brilliant alternapop.
Boards of Canada, "Dayvan Cowboy" from The Campfire Headphase, rel. 10/8/05
BoC's one official video and DAMN what a cool one. Made a few months after the album came out, it's footage of Joe Kittinger's 19.5-mile skydive (!!) edited seamlessly into footage of champion surfer Laird Hamilton riding the waves. Brilliant ambient band.
Other Videos:
Jack Johnson, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" from In Between Dreams, rel. 3/1/05. This song got me into his music...love the guitar work on this one!
Kaiser Chiefs, "I Predict a Riot" from Employment, rel. 3/7/05. The second fake-Edison-film video of the year. Britpunk reminiscent of the Jam? WIN!
Kasabian, "Club Foot" from Kasabian, rel. 3/8/05. I'll forgive these guys for being suckered into the DRM fiasco by their label (which, given the video subject, seems ironic), because this song just kicks all kinds of ass. Best bass line of 2005.
Lady Sovereign, "Random", single released 3/14/05. Another IMF video...this is such a goofy song it's hard not to love. :)
Beck, "E-Pro", from Guero, rel. 3/29/05. Still no idea what the song's about. Or what the video means. Par for the course. But on the other hand, #2 bass line of 2005, and I always wanted that "na-na" bit as my ringtone.
The Bravery, "An Honest Mistake", from The Bravery, rel. 3/29/05. *sigh* Universal, why do you refuse embedding video? You had some of the best this year! *AHEM* Yes. Any band that uses Rube Goldberg devices as a video plot wins in my book!
Nine Inch Nails, "Only", from With Teeth, rel. 5/3/05. #3 bass line of 2005. I first heard this on K-Rock and wasn't too impressed, but the video changed that. Once again director David Fincher makes visuals that aren't exactly weird, but unnerving nonetheless.
Gorillaz, "DARE", from Demon Days, rel. 5/23/05. So that's where Shaun Ryder was all those years! Love the trick ending as well. ;)
Black Eyed Peas, "Don't Phunk with My Heart", from Monkey Business, rel. 6/7/05. Aw. Yeah. Check it out. ;)
OK Go, "A Million Ways", from Oh No, rel. 8/30/05. The one that started it all--the backyard video that spurned thousands of YouTube copycats. :)
So despite being hopelessly distracted by a new life, temp jobs, marriage and moving, I still managed to be entertained by some great music.
Coming soon--2006, the year of trying to get back into a groove. ;)
