Woohoo, I have a floor again! I brought a bunch of things to Goodwill today that we no longer need/want, as well as a few no-longer-working electronics for e-recycling. I also had a few boxes and things that needed breaking down and tossing. So yeah, it's starting to look pretty spacious in here again.

I decided to go with my original idea of moving all of my bound writing over to the Forgotten Bookshelf. It's primarily printouts of long-since-trunked stories and novels, drafts of the Mendaihu Universe novels, poetry, and so on. I was also able to sneak my school yearbooks there, as well as the boxes of freebie postcards that I use for conventions.  In the process this freed up a bunch of room on three different shelves of the black bookcase next to my desk. Which is good. My plan with that stuff is to go one pile at a time, sorting and thinning out. I plan on doing an OfficeMax run sometime in the future to a) buy a new shredder and b) buy more of those cardstock binders.

While doing that, I went through what used to be on the Forgotten Bookshelf and did a bit of organization. All my photos are now in the ottoman storage, along with our wedding and reception books. Some of the loose writing and whatnot there has been moved back to the black bookshelf for resorting. Other things have been brought down to recycling and trash.

Right now (in fact, this very moment) I'm going through the three file boxes of 3.5" floppy disks and transferring all the files from them to my external -- and ensuring that I don't have doubles, triples, quadruples, etc of the same file. (I was known for saving stuff on multiple disks back in the day for one reason or another). I've found a place that I can mail the disks to for e-recycling. This by far has been one of the most relaxing and enjoyable parts of the cleaning...the floppy drive is quite slow, as you can imagine (that scene in Captain Marvel wasn't far off the mark!). It's interesting to see how old some of these WRI files are (I used MS Write exclusively until about 1999 when I finally got a copy of Word from my sister), and how they're still sort-of-readable today. A lot of them date back to 1994-96, during the Great Transcription Project (aka the I'm Too F*cking Poor to Afford to Do Anything Else Except Stay Up Late Transcribing My Old Work).

Side note: I'm pretty certain I have these copied elsewhere already on this same external drive, but my plan here, once I'm done, is to combine it all together, delete any duplicates, get it completely sorted, and then save it to my Dropbox folder for safekeeping.

All that said, I know I still have a long way to go to get all this stuff under control, but that's just fine...I kind of planned it to be a months-long cleanup, doing just a little bit at a time until I'm at a level I'm happy with!
