For those of you who may or may not know, there was a ten-car pile-up on the Golden Gate Bridge yesterday about 2:45 PST (see today's story here). Now, the GGB is a pretty old bridge with six lanes and no barrier, so it can be a bit unnerving driving across that sometimes. And it did explain the amazing number of sirens I heard at work yesterday...
(I'm not going to say that this particular crash proves my point that a lot of pickup truck drivers are often under the misapprehension that they can go anywhere they damn well please. And I'm not going to say this is a bridge where the speed limit of 35 mph is apparently a suggestion and not a law.)
So apparently it's brought up the brilliant idea of getting one of those newfangled doowackies called a "barrier transfer machine" that moves the barriers one lane over when traffic is heavy in one particular direction. This has come up before, as redoing the bridge as a one-way or building a second level is an impossibility. But hey, it works for the Tappan Zee, so why not here?
What I find funny about all this is that a lot of people seem to think this is a new idea, not to mention the fact that they're more worried about the toll going up (it's already at the astronomical $5.00! GASP!) than the safety of the drivers. *headdesk*
