HEY!

The hotels are now available for Worldcon in Denver for August 6-11...you might want to sign up soon, because a lot of the rooms are being swallowed up right quick!

Here's a direct link to the hotel listing on the Denvention site.

Note: Emm and I tried the Crowne Plaza but couldn't get anywhere, but I think that was more of a system error on their behalf than anything else. We did get a room at the Hyatt Regency without a problem, though.

So it's 2008...that time of decade again.

I have a personal affinity for music that's come out in the eighth year of the decade...partly because of 1988, of course (I'll go into that in a few minutes), but it just seems like all the music I really like has come out at this point in time.

So, to begin, let's go into why I like 1988 so much.

For those of you who don't know me already (or read my Radio Radio posts), 1987-1989 were my junior and senior years in high school. It was a time when I stopped worrying about trying to fit in socially (or at least fitting in with the 'in crowd' as it were) and decided to do my own thing as an individual. It was also about the time I started hanging with people more on my wavelength (such as [livejournal.com profile] head58). At the same time, living in a small town in central Massachusetts wasn't all that exciting, so the aural escape of college radio--at that point, the polar opposite of watered-down pop and harmless, comical metal--was definitely a great change of pace. A lot of what came out was met with plenty of "oooh, cool...!" moments.

So basically, at least for me, it was a very positive time, even during some frustrating and/or depressing moments. Added to the fact that it was during this time that I'd started seriously thinking of what I wanted my future to be. When a person listens to music, some can't help but equate the song to a specific time or place, and for me, alt.rock circa 1988 always brings me back to that mindset. It's a happy, fun time.

So it being 2008, I can only wonder what great music will come this year.
