Moving, Pt 3
Oct. 24th, 2005 08:20 amToday after work I plan on calling this apartment management to set up an appointment for the weekend that
emmalyon and I plan on flying out to SF to do some apartment hunting. They do have a good number of places in the areas that we're looking at, and I'm sure we can probably find something that suits our needs. Most of their places are either a good brisk walk to her job, or a short distance from a BART or MUNI stop. There's also a BART terminal right down the street from her job so that helps too.
Emm also looked up the places on ApartmentRatings.com to see how past tenants liked them. What we found was rather interesting...there were a few places that were given low ratings due to crime in the area (one is right outside the Tenderloin, so that makes sense), but for most the low ratings mostly came from people who just wanted to kvetch. Some were complaining about the constant noise (you get that living in a big city...duh!), some thought the management was bad (you get that everywhere, though), but for the most part the positive raters were pleased with what they got. Our only concern is making sure there's parking in the area. I'd be more than willing to contribute to the monthly parking fund to keep the car at a garage rather than parking on the street, though, since I'll probably be the one using the car the most.
.....
In other news, I talked to my family on the phone last night about the move. Sad to say that there's a very good chance I won't be home for Christmas, but we were expecting that. On the other hand, they seem to be quite happy that I'm going to be cleaning most of my stuff out of the house! Hee! Well, being that most of what I left behind is comics, records, tapes, and a lot of books (not to mention a small amount of clothes and some doohickeys), I'm sure I could get rid of a good amount of them in the week I've alloted myself for the Clean Sweep. The comics I can probably sell/give to Sidekicks or that place in Noho; the records and tapes I can probably sell to Mystery Train; the books I can have my mom sell at the bookstore she goes to in Keene; whatever's left behind I can have my sisters sell at a yard sale; and everything that doesn't get sold or tossed can be given to Salvation Army (which I can of course use for tax purposes!).
Right now I'm eager to zip up to Athol and do the Clean Sweep now, but I have to plan it around everything else, so we'll see what happens there. The only thing that worries me right now is renting the U-Haul, driving everything down here to put into storage, driving the van back so I can get my car back, then days before the move I have to have someone come up to Athol with me so I can drop off my car at the house and have them drive me back.
And speaking of cars, I noticed when I looked up my credit reports yesterday (I'm in good standing! w0000t!) that I only have about $600 left to pay on my car, so I might figure out a way to get it all paid off now so that would be one less thing to worry about. After that I'll have to find a way to sell it. As much as I love my car, we won't need two of them in SF so I'll have to get rid of it.
More as this unfolds...
