Keeping busy on my days off

So of course I can't let a day off go by without Doing Stuff That Needs Doing. Because I don't know how to slack off without feeling guilty about it, heh.

More pictures have been hung on the wall, and several have been put aside for storage as we're thinking of updating our art prints. We of course buy most of them from our local museums or ones we've visited in the last couple of years, and the old ones have started suffering from sun fade. A is currently looking at multiple museums' online shops, and we're also awaiting the re-opening of Ukiyo-e Heroes' website -- they do a lot of giclee prints of anime and sf/f characters in a feudal Japan style, and we already own a handful of them already. We'll be putting more pictures up tomorrow!

Also done today: two of three things I've been meaning to get rid of have now been gotten rid of! Thanks to FB Marketplace our moving boxes have been picked up by a few local Millennials that will be moving soon, and our old Dyson stick vacuum (which is around seventeen years old at this point, and it was a refurb when we got it) was also taken. Someone is picking up our old floor lamp tomorrow. This means we once again have more room in the garage, and the pile of Things to Donate is once again shrinking. I'll need to find the time to drop the four or five boxes going to Goodwill. I'd do it tomorrow but there's no rush.

Tomorrow is my second day off in a row (yay!) and A is doing a half-day, so after she signs off we'll be doing some grocery shopping, but that's about it!

Well, at least I did get to be lazy and lie in bed until 7am!

fitter happier more productive

Okay, maybe not fitter, but no longer feeling brought down by allergies, so yay me! And more productive, which is a surprise given that I did a TON of personal stuff on my two days off this week. On Monday I did the much-needed laundry which I hadn't had time for last week, but I also finally got rid of two very big boxes. One had contained A's new treadmill and the other our new mini-freezer (more on that in a moment), which were taking up a lot of room. And while I was at it, yesterday I finally took care of that long-delayed trip to Goodwill to get rid of several boxes of books as well as my old printer (they do e-recycling if they can't fix it) and I once again have a floor in Spare Oom! There's only one box left to get rid of -- the one the new printer came in -- but I'm holding onto it for just a tiny bit longer until I know for sure it's working fine.

But that's not all! I'm writing daily entries for 750Words again! Right now I'm kind of taking the easy way out by writing -- again -- about music, going through my digital library and revisiting much of the music I listened to while writing the Bridgetown Trilogy. I'm doing this on purpose to help me focus on the remaster of A Division of Souls, and it's definitely working. I've been trying to restart using that site and been having a tough time getting started in the first place, so this was a perfect kick in the butt that I needed. I'm hoping this will also get me restarted on a few other things I've been meaning to restart as well, like the journaling and other creative outlets.

Oh, and I've installed the Squaredle app on my phone, so that should work as a way to distract me from the internets during my work breaks, heh.

Here's to hoping it works!

Almost there

Wait, how is it the 18th already?? This is the problem with December, it always goes by way too quickly, especially when one's brain falls into a 'take each day as it comes' mindset instead of getting wrapped up in the busy holiday vibe. It's actually been kind of a quiet Q4 at work, though. There are certainly pockets of time where the customer line never ends, but it seems a little less chaotic this year. I know our numbers aren't quite as high as they were this time a few years back, but we're not exactly struggling either.

Anyhoo, I've basically been wrapping up any year-end business these last couple of days and plan to continue doing so until the end of the month. It's my own little way of keeping calm and unstressed, I suppose. I know I have two compilations to finish off -- one is technically a writing soundtrack for a future writing project, and the other is the end-of-year mixtape. Those are easy enough, and I don't think I have anything planned for the next couple of Sundays so perhaps I'll get them done then!

Restarting fresh...sort of

Okay, so it's only thirteen days into the new month, am I starting the 'fresh month, fresh start' thing this early?? No, not really. Merely that I've finally finished off a few long-term creative things I'd been doing and given myself a few days' rest before starting up with something else. Nothing out of the norm here, really. Even though I'd had a crazy week at the Day Job, it didn't really put me off schedule at all.

So! After a walk around the neighborhood (and to our garden plot to water) and a much-overdue vacuuming of the house (sorry, cats, I know you're terrified of that Noisy Evil Machine Wot Lurks In the Hall Closet), I am ready to do a bit of PC cleaning, houseplant watering, and working on stuff I'd been putting aside. No time like the present! [It does help that I also have tomorrow off, which gives me an extra day to get more writing work done!]

And speaking of restarting fresh, I've been meaning to take the bus and/or walk to and from work lately but the odd schedules and needing the car for shopping purposes have kept me from doing so. I really must do better there. Not just for the exercise but also because I'm just wasting gas at this point. And I keep meaning to restart the stretches/exercises again but I keep getting distracted and forgetting! Not going to beat myself up over it, just going to try to do better is all. Semi-related, I have a word search in my satchel that has not been touched at all that I really should break into during my breaks. All it takes is that next step, yeah? What's keeping me other than passive distraction?

Anyhoo. All this cleaning and moving around has tuckered me out, so time to sit and relax for a bit, and listen to the Blue Angels VOOOOOOOSH over our apartment.

Hope everyone has a good week!

Midweek respite

WHOOF. Those midshifts where I'm the delegated Front End Manager for the day are just...blerg. Sometimes they're fine, maybe a little boring, if the day is slow and there aren't all that many customers coming in. But last night was just EXHAUSTING. We were incredibly busy the entire time and I'm not entirely sure why, right up until I left at 8pm. Perhaps it was that the weather was lovely, or that people were coming in to avoid the inevitable Mother's Day rush coming this weekend, or whatever, I don't know.

Point being, I'm just very glad that I have today off and I refuse to get stressed out about anything at all. Do a few errands (drop stuff off at Goodwill and donate a few things to the local animal hospital, maybe do laundry later), do a bit of writing, and maybe watch the freshly minted new remaster of The Beatles movie Let It Be on Disney+. And that's about it.

So that's what weekends are like

Let me tell you, it felt wonderful to sleep in two days in a row (well, at least until 8), even if we were prodded by cat paws to get up so kitties could be fed. A couple of days with no huge plans other than a bit of shopping and walking through the park was something I don't give myself nearly as often as I should. Even on my midweek days off, I'm usually up the same time A is so I can have a full day of catching up with writing and other things.

Speaking of writing, I'm at another chapter that seems to be slowing me down. I think it's that I'm not allowing myself to get into the heads of the characters featured in these new scenes, even though I want them to be there. I'm pretty sure it's because I don't really know enough about their jobs as military, even though I am purposely NOT playing their characters as the stereotypical hardass Adonises with ridiculous firepower. That's not the kind of characters they are -- they're your aunt and cousin and brother who signed up and are decidedly not the Lee Greenwood Patriot kind of soldier. It's not a military sf story, nor is it a space opera, like I keep saying. It just happens to have some of that as background and plot.

Aaaanyway. It's Sunday afternoon and I'm chilling in Spare Oom listening to tunes and doing my Sunday chores (laundry, blogging, and so on). Tomorrow is an early open, followed by three midshifts (OOF), but I'll live.

midweekery

One of the downsides to working the midshift on Wednesday is that I lose all track of time and forget to post here on the DW, and run out of time to write something for Walk in Silence. I don't feel guilty about missing a posting day now and again, but my brain sometimes does give me that wave of 'aaaah you skipped a day EVERYTHING IS RUINED' that I duly try to ignore. I mean, I'm using all that time to work on Theadia and maintaining a daily schedule on the 750Words site, which are currently just a bit more important to me at the moment.

Thankfully I have today off so I might just throw something together for Welcome to Bridgetown this afternoon. It's nice to have a day off midweek to get errands done and take my time doing what I want to do. I of course still wake up early out of habit, so that also gives me the morning to faff around a bit without any guilt! Heh.

midweek day off

I actually enjoy having a day off in the middle of the week! It's not as enjoyable as having two days off in a row, but it's sort of a 'six of one...' thing, really. Breaking up a five day work week midway through, especially considering I work in retail, is not really a bad thing as it helps me recharge, gives me time to do house errands, and best of all, allows me to spend as long as I want on that day's writing session!

Am I writing right now? Well, no, not yet. I've been giving the cats their requested attention and starting the laundry and realizing I'll need to zip over to the bank for more quarters as I'm doing three loads today. But it's still midmorning and I have the rest of the day ahead of me. I have time!

Midweek updatery

If you haven't heard elsewhere already, as of 1 April I have now officially started the complete rewrite of Theadia! The tl;dr here is that I'm approaching it the same way I did in rewriting The Phoenix Effect as the Bridgetown Trilogy way back in the day because I feel its current version doesn't do the story justice. Will this too be a trilogy? A duology? A really long single book? Stay tuned!

But yeah, that's been on my mind these last couple of days, and I'm excited about that. I've been ensuring I have a good stretch of time to focus solely on it, just like before. It's kind of an exercise to see if the process that was so successful previously could be repeated here, I suppose. Right now there hasn't been all that much divergence other than rephrasing a few passages and pulling out some of the chaff, but I'm fully expecting that to happen soon enough, once I start elaborating on some of the subplots and introducing more of the characters.

Other than that, I have today off, so I'm hoping to get a lot done after I do some of my morning errands like playing with the cats and grocery shopping!

outside inside

While I didn't get a chance to take my ten minute breaks outside the last couple of days, I'm not too worried about it. The plus side to having bookkeeping duties at the day job on the weekends is that it takes precedence over register duty unless we are super short-staffed. And the great thing is that's been somewhat rectified with three new hires this past week. I've met two of them and they're really nice and definitely people I don't have to babysit for hours on end. I can leave them alone up front while I do what needs doing in the cash office.

All that to say that I've had a relatively calm couple of work days to the point where I didn't really need to head outside to detox! Heh.

It's another wonky work week, this time due to the main bookkeeper taking his own days off, which is only fair, and it's not all that bad either. Only one midshift this time out! So today is my Sunday in which I get to do boring things like laundry and grocery shopping and catching up with blogs, heh.

Start afresh

Today's our last day of vacation, and I'm already looking forward to getting back into the swing of things come tomorrow. As much as I've enjoyed the mental and physical slowdown to recharge my batteries, I'm more than ready to get moving again. These days off helped me rethink the way I approach my Current Day Job day. Aside from the stressful moments -- which to be honest aren't even close to unhealthy as the bank job's were -- I truly enjoy being there. As I've said in the past, my one concern as of late was wasting so much time on social media during my breaks, and wanting to break that habit once and for all.

There are different ways I can approach it, and one I'm planning to do is the one I used to get myself to quit smoking ages ago: 'let's see how long I can go without doing [x]'. Something as simple as reverse psychology works for me on occasion, so why not try it here? Let's see how long I can go without screwing around on my phone. Let's step outside for a few minutes. Let's bring in one of my Publisher's Weeklys that I'm desperately falling behind on and read that instead. Whatever works.

I'm also happy that this week's upcoming schedule is one I can handle easily. Opening tomorrow, followed by two midshifts (tiring but not exactly stressful if I play them right), followed by a day off, and ending the week with two bookkeeper-opens. I do like a steady schedule instead of a wonky one, so I'm hoping that this one becomes the norm, or at least close to it. [Now, I'm expecting the coworker who broke his foot to be returning sometime this month which may relieve me of one of the midshifts, but we'll see.]

In the meantime, it's Sunday which means it's also laundry day and PC cleaning day, so that's pretty much the only other things I need to do.

Hope everyone has a good week ahead!

All the cleaning

In preparation for our mini-vacation starting tomorrow, we've spent most of today so far (after a tasty brunch at Joe's Coffee Shop) cleaning the apartment. This would include: using the Uproot Clean rake on the two rugs in the living room, a major scrub-down of the shower, washing of bedsheets and blankets, floor mopping, and vacuuming. [I will be starting in on that final one once I catch my breath.]

And who, you ask, will be watching over our cats in our absence? One of my coworkers will be cat-sitting! They have experience and have confirmed their work schedule fits perfectly on the days we need. They'll be staying here so we're just making sure everything is clean and in working order.

And in between all that, I am of course also doing my weekly PC cleaning, of which I am about two weeks behind on. I'm not too worried considering I've had this new computer for about a month now, but it doesn't hurt to chase out those pesky bugs and fix those weak spots. Thankfully I have not had any PC issues so far other than the occasional internet drop-out (which I've mentioned here before), so it's always good to ensure it doesn't happen anyway!

Am now all sweaty and a bit tired, but it's worth it.

Weekend updatery

Before I begin, can I just say that I find the validation process for this site is hilarious? I mean, it's a normal "click on all the picture of hockey players to prove you're not a bot" thing, but it occurs to me that the pictures used are AI-generated. This means that said hockey players might have three arms or be playing with five sticks and bending themselves in directions that human spines aren't meant to go in. Heh!

Anyway! Happened to have today off so A and I went for one of our favorite walks around the neighborhood, heading up to a great coffee shop near Golden Gate Park then walking back through the park itself. A good couple of miles there and back with sights to see and pictures to take! I have to say that the Day Job has definitely helped me get back in shape, what with all the walking and standing I do six to eight hours a day.

Did a lot of house cleaning upon our return home, doing some intensive vacuuming (including those hard to reach bits where the carpet meets the walls) (and several days' worth of shedded cat hair, of course). I'd have done laundry as well, but I've been told by our landlord that a major fix is being done on the machine downstairs and will be out of commission until next week. Which means I'll most likely need to slip out to the local laundromat and do it tomorrow morning before my afternoon work shift. Which really isn't a problem, considering I usually spend the time doing some reading and enjoying some coffee from next door.

And the writing? Well, it's getting there. In small spurts lately, but it's getting there.

Back up to speed

The last couple of work weeks have been odd schedule wise, splitting between opens and midshifts and the occasional almost-close, so my 'weekends' have been shifted around a little. I had yesterday and today off, and chose to utilize them as Getting Stuff Done At Home days. Yesterday was the house stuff, doing laundry and replacing a few things around the apartment, and today has been all about catching up with bills (and taxes) as well as catching up creatively.

I've gotten some personal writing and art done already today, and I'm giving myself a good amount of time to work on MU4 soon. And how is that project going?

Glad you asked. Some days I'll get a few hundred words out, other days I'll get a few dozen. Either way, I'm being patient with this project on purpose: I'm returning to an older writing process that I haven't used in several years, and I don't want to rush it. It's a process that worked, and worked wonderfully, and the aim here is to use it again, not to 'relive' it. The only thing I do want to work on is the frequency of it. There have been days when I haven't written, whether by distraction or avoidance or simply no time, and that's something I can adjust. Not force but adjust, because forcing it will only ruin what I'm trying to do. Adjust, like having a quick writing session before those midshifts, or using the laptop (which I haven't done in a while).

Whatever works, as long as it's going in the right direction, yeah?

things done, things to do

Finally made good on my promise to get my haircut today at the finally-reopened Supercuts on Fillmore. It's still long, just past shoulder length, but the dead- and split-ends are finally gone! I'm cursed with having extremely straight and fine hair so I can't really shape it in any way as gravity will eventually take over. On the other hand, I'm blessed with a full head of it even at my age, so I'm fine with that trade-off. Still, I spent a bit of change getting a trim and some spray that will hopefully keep it healthy.

And while I was out, I went to the vet's office across the street from the Supercuts to set up an appointment later this week to get a wellness check done for Jules and Cali. They're not going to be happy about it, but it's gotta be done sooner or later. As I write this they're both here in Spare Oom having their afternoon naps, unaware of their fate a few days from now...heh.

Anything else? I'm still behind on getting work done on MU4, but I'm slowly catching up. Just have to stop screwing around and get to work!

Another Short Weekend

Well, shortish at any rate. I've been working Saturday mornings at the shop (part of my bookkeeping duties) but it gets me out at 1pm so I still have the rest of the day to do whatever, even if it's doing errands and whatnot. And considering that our building's washing machine is still not working correctly (it should be fixed this Thursday, last I heard), I spent part of this morning kicking back at the laundromat to do our laundry while A stayed at home to make apple sauce and wait for a package from IKEA. Which alas contained broken items, but they should hopefully be sending replacements soon.

What about the writing, though? Yeah, I've been kind of distracted by other things this past week and hardly got anything done other than some cutting and pasting, but I'm hoping I can rectify that this coming week. Granted, part of last week's schedule contained three midday shifts that didn't provide all that much time for me to work on MU4, but this week's is much better, with only one midday shift and the rest all mornings.

Still, I need to get my butt in gear, because this novel ain't going anywhere without me putting in the work!

Late Sunday Afternoon stuff

I do love that for the most part I have Sundays off, because I can sleep in (as much as our cats will let us), and it's a day when I can just chill, catch up with mundane errands and go out to brunch. Which is exactly what I did! A bit of vacuuming, a run to Target to stock up on a few household things, and otherwise not being stressed out over anything at all.

The last couple of days at the Day Job have been a bit busy but not nearly as chaotic as T-Day and the day before it. From what I've been told, it should be rather unexciting for a few more weeks until people start shopping for Christmas feasts. There hasn't been any holiday music playing in the store as of yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts soon.

I did not get around to making any new mixtapes these last couple of days, but perhaps I might remedy that in the next few days when I fill out the last couple of half-made playlists and perhaps make a couple of new ones. I'm kind of embarrassed that I've been so lazy about them this year!

Other than that, not much else to report...hope everyone has a good week ahead!

Days Off

So of course today is the first of two days off from the Day Job and what am I doing? All The House Cleaning! Heh. Well, it needed to be done as we hadn't vacuumed since before the trip and we had a lot of laundry to do as well. And then there was the shower which, yeah, still needs a secondary scrub but still looks a LOT better than it did previously. Going to relax a bit now before starting in on some revision work.

October is coming up and of course I'm going to kick off another monthly whiteboard refresh! Was just thinking about this earlier today...I'm always wanting to start off a new month with a fresh fresh start to get my creative avenues up and running: the journaling, the blogging, fiction and poetry work, and so on. There's also the fact that Inktober is starting.

When the new month comes around I'm often saying "okay, let's get back to our schedule here", fill out the whiteboard calendar, and do what I can to keep to it. I don't always make it to the other end of the month, but I've realized that I no longer focus on that particular issue as a failure. The whole point is that it's a refresh and not a doomed attempt at perfection. Seeing it in that way has lifted a lot of the self-induced stress of keeping to a schedule so that it's all about getting up and trying again.

Moving Around on a Hot Day

Yeah, don't know what possessed me to actually do ALL THE CLEANING today, on what's probably the warmest day of the year here in SF. (The weather app on my PC says 68F, but it feels more like 78F to me. We took a walk at Crissy Field this morning and topped it off with a bit of shopping and burgers for lunch at Bill's. And then I had the brilliant idea of vacuuming, which meant doing some shredding first so I can pick up any stray shred bits, which meant cleaning up a bit of the back room, which meant tidying up the back closet so I could put a few things away. And do laundry on the interim. Oh, and have I written my blogs for Monday and Tuesday yet? No! Sigh.

ANYWAY. It's 4pm now, the house is clean and the laundry should be about done in a few minutes. Then I can kick back and relax just a little bit before we start doing a bit of cooking for dinner. Whew! *passes out*

Weekend Updatery

We are both currently kicking back on the couch relaxing after a full weekend of things. We drove down to Watsonville to Gizdich Ranch for some apple picking (as well as looking for actual sunlight, considering how our side of town has been stuck in overcast gloom as of late) (I, by the way, completely forgot to put on sunscreen but thankfully I did not get TOO burnt.)... Watsonville, as you know Bob, is where most of the Bay Area gets its produce, especially strawberries! It's a flat stretch just south of the Santa Cruz mountain range which means the only way we can get there is to drive the PCH or via South Bay highways, either one taking at least two hours. I'm still feeling the exhaustion from all the driving!

We walked up the street for ridiculously large but yummy breakfast burritos so I don't feel *too* guilty for not doing much exercise. I did manage to get the laundry done as well as give the front sliding doors a good wash (they were embarrassingly dirty), and am currently running a few PC cleaners and scanners, which I've been doing on weekends to ensure Spare Oom PC remains in peak health. A, on the other hand, has been cooking all afternoon and the entire apartment smells absolutely tasty!

Anyhoo...not much else to report other than that we are both tired and are probably not going to do much else today other than watch some British TV or something. Heh.

Hope everyone has a good week!
