That was my question. I'm *thinking" it's because his actions were so mundane--he didn't go running into the fray, he didn't charge in with a gun. He was guy "eating his McDonald's" next door, saw and heard something weird, and got the person out. Perhaps one can't or shouldn't be considered a hero unless their actions were out of the ordinary or not expected.
[On an amusing side note, it just dawned on me that tends to be the atmosphere in some American companies--one can do an awesome job doing mundane work and never be noticed, but a single client- (or money-) saving event will get all the kudos. That's irritating as well, but that's another post entirely. ;) ]
