Another weekend, another music post!
I consider 2002 a great year, both music and writing-wise. I was working down in the Belfry two hours a day, seven days a week, almost without fail, by this point. I'd finished A Division of Souls and started in on The Persistence of Memories, and Bruce and Eric and I were jamming as jeb! by this point. And there was a LOT of really good stuff that came out this year. Lots of buying of cds at Newbury. Lots of books read as well...after not reading all that much, I'd started buying a LOT more books by then, along with the comic books. Workwise, all was good--by fourth quarter Bruce and I had created a great team that I gave the unofficial name of "Bald Jeb" (Brian, Adam, Leslie, Dominic, Jon, Eric, Bruce) and by the beginning of next year our department had won Yankee's MVP award for kicking butt during the Bed Bath & Beyond rollout.
So yeah...2002 ended up being a really good year for me. :)
So why not start out with some of the best editing I've ever seen in a video?
Cornelius, "Point of View Point" from Point, rel. 1/22/2002
Strangely enough, the video version of the song is much slower than the album version...
Low (with tomandandy), "Half-Light" from The Mothman Prophecies Soundtrack, rel. 1/25/2002
It's from a Richard Gere movie, but it's a surprisingly good Richard Gere movie!
Boards of Canada, "Music is Math" from Geogaddi, rel. 2/19/2002
Not an official video, but this is very indicative of what they try to achieve with their music in terms of mood and feel. Also, I believe I did a review of this album on
head58's Fantod City site...well worth picking up.
Buffalo Daughter, "Mirror Ball", originally from I, rel. 2/19/2002
A recent live version that cuts off the first minute or so of the song, but it's a great one. I love the layering on this song and wish I could do a cover of it some day.
Wire, "Comet"/"I Don't Understand", originally from Read & Burn 01 EP, rel. 7/2/2002
Further proving that fifty-year-old punks can still kick ass. ;)
Oasis, "Stop Cryin' Your Heart Out", from Heathen Chemistry, released 7/2/2002
A very underrated Oasis album, and one of my favorites of theirs.
The Coral, "Dreaming of You", from The Coral, released 7/29/2002
Not a big fan of the album, but this was a great summer song, made even more famous when it was featured on Scrubs when JD and Elliot got lucky. ;)
Interpol, "PDA", from Turn on the Bright Lights, released 8/19/2002
This is one of those rare songs where I heard it once and deemed it frikkin' AWESOME. One of the top ten songs of the decade for me. Not my favorite video, though...I think a performance-in-studio video would have done more justice.
Hooverphonic, "The World is Mine", from Jackie Cane, released 9/23/2002
As I always say...I loves me some Hooverphonic, and this tune's very against type--very happy and poppy. The video fits the song perfectly!
Porcupine Tree, "The Sound of Muzak", originally from In Absentia, released 9/24/2002
SO many good songs off this album. Alas, no videos made, so this live version will do...
Simian, "LA Breeze", from We Are Your Friends, released 10/28/2002
Yes, these are the (some of the) same guys behind Simian Mobile Disco. Very odd video, but a fun song and album!
Johnny Cash, "Hurt", from American IV: The Man Comes Around, released 11/5/2002
Only The Man In Black could make a Nine Inch Nails song more visceral than the original. And the shot with June on the stairs gets me every time.
And to end the year on a slightly happier note:
Rainer Maria, "Ears Ring" from the single, released 11/19/2002
(This would actually come out on Long Knives Drawn in January 2003)
And since there's a big pile of songs I wanted to add but can't embed:
Gorillaz, "19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)" from G-Sides, released 3/11/2002
My favorite of the Gorillaz videos. :)
Silverchair, "The Greatest View" from Diorama, released 3/31/2002
Even though this album came out early in the year, I didn't really get into it until near the end of the year, and it's surprisingly good. Their last until they finally returned five years later.
Weezer, "Keep Fishin'" from Maladroit, released 5/14/2002
Come on--Weezer? The Muppets? How can you go wrong?
The Vines, "Get Free" from Highly Evolved, released 7/14/2002
Screamy, scrappy punk? Yay!
Nickel Creek, "The Smoothie Song" from This Side, released 8/13/2002
I love Chris' face when he drops off the fiddle sans strings at the end. :)
Coldplay, "Got Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from A Rush of Blood to the Head, released 8/26/2002
Lots of great songs from this album (which I also got into late), but this one is my favorite.
Beck, "Little One" from Sea Change, released 9/24/2002
Another I got into late...but it's now my favorite Beck album, and in the top ten albums of the decade. Well worth picking up. This song is the one that oddly pops into mind from time to time. Odd, because it's not exactly a catchy tune...
Good Charlotte, "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous", from The Young and the Hopeless, released 10/1/2002
Yeah, had to put this in. ;)
Sigur Ros, "Untitled #1" from ( ), released 10/28/2002
One of the creepiest videos I've ever seen, but an amazing album.
Hope you enjoy! :)
