Yeah, I have the same mixed feelings. Potential is there, but will it live up to it? I will wait and see what the buzz is like and maybe try and see it in February when the daycare does their parents' night out and will keep CB until 9:00.
Have you seen the newer trailer? That one is the original from last summer. Here is the latest one, which ratchets up the intensity a few notches. I have hopes.
This film is either a grounds-eye view of a Godzilla like monster attacking the city, or as many have suggested, a grounds-eye view of Cthulu rising. The trick here is how well they can pull of the conceit, whatever it is.
