WTF, LJ?

No, seriously. WTF???

If I'm going to have to spend an entire evening figuring out how to archive my posts from the last four-plus years, there's going to be hell to pay.

I hear there are tools for making copies of journals and printing journals in book form, but I have yet to investigate how to use them.

I would miss LJ very much.

I wonder if they're setting up to charge for ALL accounts.

Check out [livejournal.com profile] bryant's most recent post. Archiving options galore.

Yep, going to check those when I get home. I have too many longwinded articles I wrote that I'd rather not see vanish.

I could simply be overreacting, but then again, when AOL started dropping all their extra apps awhile back, a LOT of people lost stuff because nobody got a decent heads-up, so I don't want to take any chances.

I guess I'm just pissed, because I depend on LJ to keep in touch with all of you back east. I'm also wondering, because LJ just had permanent accounts on sale a month or so ago...

Apropos of nothing, I got an email from Tracey--she says Happy Birthday to you. ;)

And I just found out that [livejournal.com profile] editswlonghair knew Darrell Temple (you remember him? he was in my class) back in the day. Small damn world.

I would recommend backing up (using one of the suggested tools), because it is the Internet, and nothing stays around forever, but I also don't think LJ is going anywhere, at least not for some time.

I don't think we're looking to get any new features any time soon, or perhaps the new development will be in-house by Sup (I'm voting on the former). But there are many LJ-code ( based knock-offs back when it was open-sourcey and not a business)around the Internet (deadjournal, insanejournal) that are run by a couple of folks that I don't think make any money off it at all.

And if LJ actually does go down and no one tries to rescue it... there are the knock-offs and people will probably migrate to them.

I think I'm backing up, but I'm not going anywhere yet. What I might do is set up a Wordpress blog and do what [livejournal.com profile] mizkit does - crosspost.

Aaaaaaaagh! I sincerely hope LJ stays up, and not just because I have a permanent account!
