More PC issues

Everything was fine last night...and then when I came home from work today, the VPN app was taking up 98% CPU for no reason at all (and this happened the other day as well). I got the Task Manager to end that, but when I tried to restart the PC the Start button refused to respond. Just a few of multiple weird things that have been happening over the past couple of weeks.

SO. Right now I'm copying important things from the C and D drives to externals and once that's done, I'm going to do a complete factory reset. (I haven't done it with this PC yet, which says a lot about how good it's been. I'm pretty sure I did at least three or four resets for my older PCs back in the day.)

On the one hand it's annoying because I'm spending all this time fiddling with the tech when I could be working on creative stuff. On the other hand, this is definitely showing how much I have on the PC itself that I probably could or should move elsewhere, either out of safety or privacy. It took a few hours to move everything, but it's safe on an external now (and I'm disconnecting everything as we speak), so hopefully I'll have this up and running again by this evening. If not, I have tomorrow off so I can always finish it up then!

PC stuff

I've had this Lenovo for over three years now and it's the one PC I've had the longest with the least amount of issues. It hasn't failed catastrophically (yet), nor has it had major processing issues...until lately. It's not significant, as things are still running fine. It's just small weird things, like the File Explorer lagging for a few seconds every time I use it, or the fact that the Plex Media Server would disconnect for no reason.

*sigh* Maybe this PC is finally starting to show its age?

Today I've done a bit of fiddling with the settings and while it's working better now, it's focusing on Performance rather than Appearance so the fonts are looking a bit weird and spindly. I might need to tweak it a little bit more at some point, probably on Thursday when I have a day off and have time for it. Amusingly all the text kind of looks like it's reverted back to Ye Olde Windows 98 Dayes which, y'know, not pretty to look at but at least it's behaving.

If anything, though, if I'm going to have to buy another PC at some point in the future, I'm thinking I'll get another Lenovo because this warhorse has been the best PC I've had in years!

A Comedy of PC Errors

Eesh, what a week.

First Spare Oom PC begins its death throes. Then my coworkers' PCs are refusing to connect to the phone bank. Then a few work servers start going all wonky and we're disconnected from our Communicators for half a day.

And for a Friday? First my work laptop decides to lose its VPN connection and I waste a good forty-five minutes disconnecting and reconnecting everything so I can get back online.

And to top it all off? I suddenly realize that the desktop PC I ordered through Best Buy and picked up at the local store? The wrong model. I ordered a Gateway DX4870-UB318 (with 8GB processing memory among other things), and was given a DX4870-UB17 (with 6GB processing memory and without other things the UB318 has, and a difference of $100 in price). So now I have to waste another day I could be going to the gym (and writing in the evening) replacing it.

I'm more mad at myself than the store for not checking the tags in the first place and not noticing until a day later, but I'm at least happy that the Best Buy customer service people have all been "oops, that's TOTALLY our bad, we'll replace that for you right away."

So yeah...that's been my week. A comedy of technical errors.

Here's to hoping the weekend goes better!

How prevalent my PC

Being without my main desktop PC is always a weird thing...I've had a desktop PC every day since 1996 and used it on an almost daily basis for my writing ever since then. [Contrary to how it sounds, my music collection wasn't a part of my PC setup until about 2001, when I started burning compilation cds. I listened to the physical cds for the most part and didn't start ripping them to a hard drive well until about 2004.] And currently, when I'm not on the PC, I'm using my laptop instead. So either way, you could say I'm online and/or working on something pretty much every single day.

That's not to say that I'm chained to the thing. When we're on vacation, I've been using my Nook or my phone to go online and catch up with things if I so choose. I get the occasional twitch that I wish I had my music with me, but it goes away pretty quickly. I can easily check my email and Twitter feed on my cell phone. I still try to work on the occasional thing longhand like my poetry, and plan on doing more of it once the Great Trilogy Revision calms down a bit. Still, it's nice to have the thing when it's needed.

So in light of yesterday's sad and pathetic death of Spare Oom PC [for the record, it turns on, it just doesn't want to run Windows anymore], it's made me think about my writing output. Since I work from home, I have to balance my work stuff and my writing stuff, and creating things like this blog post, which would probably take twenty minutes to type out on any other day actually takes a good couple of hours, hastily typed in the occasional free minutes between things. And the Blogging the Beatles posts usually worked on all Sunday afternoon and posted that evening--that's why one of my ideas was to try working on those over the course of a few days rather than an entire day.

I'm trying not to opine about how I time-managed my writing in the past this time...instead I'm trying to learn from how I did it then and implement some form of it in the present. A lot of it really does have to do with how much time I waste...as much as I try to convince myself I'm cutting down, I'm still driven to distraction by social media and my music collection. It's a work in progress, I suppose. I'm not going to go the "disconnect the internet for x hours" route, because I do end up using it a lot for quick reference when I actually am writing. And besides, my boredom level with the internet in general has dropped to the point where I'll goof off on Twitter or YouTube for a half hour simply for some mindless downtime after work. The music collection can be a black hole sometimes, though. Having the temptation to reorganize, retag, peruse it for hours on end for listening to things I haven't heard in a while, or what have you...but over the last few months I've actually been a LOT better with it than I have. I think a lot of it had to do with narrowing my focus on the task at hand: in this instance, the major revision of A Division of Souls. I gave myself ten minutes to decide on what I'd listen to during that writing session, and stuck to it while I focused solely on that revision, and I think it's working.

Either way...it does feel kind of weird not to have it on, after all these years of constantly having it turned on for hours on end. I am doing a bit of comparison shopping in the interim...as mentioned yesterday, I'm kind of leaning towards another Gateway, since this one worked so well during the time I had it...it was worth the price I paid for it. And while I'm not exactly devastated without a desktop PC--I'm adjusting just fine with my laptop, if working just a bit slower--it'll be nice to have a replacement as soon as possible.

Spare Oom PC Woes

Well...looks like the Spare Oom PC is finally on its last legs. It's had a very good run these last few years--I bought it at Best Buy right around Christmas 2009 soon after we moved out to the Richmond here, so a three-and-a-half year run is actually pretty good. I wish PCs would last a hell of a lot longer, but that's another gripe entirely. Still--lots of music listening and downloading, working on novels (including FINALLY finishing the trilogy!), blog posts, and everything in between.

I'm bummed, of course, but not devastated. The PC started acting up a few months ago, when it would occasionally not boot up Windows properly. For me that was a high sign that I should probably start backing things up. All my music has been on one of my externals for the last year or so, so there's no loss at all there. Maybe the original mp3s that I downloaded from Amazon and eMusic (their default download folders are on the C drive), but I always copy them to the external when I buy them. My entire writing folder is on Dropbox, so there's no loss there at all. Any other creative things (scans, artwork, etc.) are on an older external. All my pictures are on that older external as well. To put it bluntly--I learned from past experience and knew that saving everything to externals and/or Dropbox is definitely worth the extra five minutes' work. So yeah...all told, nothing of import is lost if it decides to die on me.

At the moment, it's running the Startup Repair at a glacial pace, and as usual, it will most likely not find any problems whatsoever, and reboot. This is probably the longest it's taken to do so, however, so I'm thinking it's time to start shopping around. In the meantime, if I get it up and running again, I'll start going through the C drive and copying that stuff to the older external as well, so there's absolutely no loss of anything.

That said...I will of course be continuing with the PC. Yes, I know, there are a few of you out there who own Apple products and love them to bits, but I have personal (and professional) reasons for not going that route. Besides, I've been using PCs exclusively since the 90s and see no real reason to switch over now, despite the positive noise I hear from that side. I have iTunes for the mp3s that are exclusive to them, and that's good enough. So yeah--if anyone has any suggestions for non-iThingy computers that you like or have heard good things about, let me know!

I'm also open to Windows 8 and touch screen, to be honest. That's what my Acer laptop is, and I quite like it. I know W8 has gotten a bit of a bad rap from some people, but really, it is what you make it, and once I realized that it gives you a lot more ability to tweak the visuals to your liking, I really started liking it.

If anything, the only real annoyance at this time is redownloading/reinstalling programs if/when I get a new PC. A lot of them I can easily grab from their websites as before (Media Monkey, the latest MS Office, AVG, etc.), and I do have the software for the few I can't (like the NCH audio software). Honestly, that's not a bad deal, it's just time consuming sometimes. Still...it's a small price to pay.

Anyhoo...back to work. Got my laptop going for the tunage, and I think I can get over not downloading the new Vampire Weekend album on its release day, so all's well for the most part. :p

Under PC construction again

So as mentioned on Twitter, I'm surrounded by PCs today: I've got my work laptop up and running (I get to work from home until the end of the year, woo!), I've got my Lenovo laptop on my desk that I'm using to post this, and I've got my main PC which is currently going through a major cleaning. I was listening to Save Alternative earlier today via this laptop, but it seems it was causing everyone else's PC to act wonky in the process (more on that in a minute), so now I'm going lo-fi by listening to KFOG via my old alarm clock radio that's across the room.

The Spare Oom PC has been acting a little wonky lately, and I'm not exactly sure why...it could be that I had way too much stuff (read: mp3s) taking up space on the hard drive that it was slowing things up, or it could be that an update did more harm than good, or maybe just that one of the sectors decided to wig out. I'm not entirely sure, but I'm taking precautions. All the mp3s are now over on the big external, the pictures and other things are over on the other, my writing's on Dropbox, and so on. I've just made a list of programs I use that I can redownload or reinstall just in case I need to reformat. I'm currently doing a CCleaner run that's wiping the free disk space just to clear everything up. Hopefully it'll act better once I'm done here in a few hours, but we'll see.

As for the Lenovo laptop...weird thing, this. For some reason this laptop is the culprit for our router to say ONOES TOO MUCH INFO and crash any open browser on any PC that happens to be up. If I have the time this week I should take a look at the wireless settings on this laptop to see if it's hogging bandwidth or just being stupid. Now that I'm not streaming music and have only this browser up, it seems to be working just fine.

As for the work laptop...well...not much to be said there. As I like to say, it's a POS model, just like most of the others we use at work. ;)

[PC] Palm, Meet Forehead.

So.

Went to the Media Monkey forums, and I'm thinking I probably should have done this in the first place instead of getting all cheesed off and wondering why nothing was working correctly. In the forums I found that the current version of MM has something that doesn't jive with Windows 7 64-bit at all and causes all sorts of spectacular failures...including what I've been living through over the last few weeks. Seems it's partly MM's fault, partly Windows'.

After doing *ANOTHER* factory restore, all is well. Music is working completely fine on Windows Media Player. Adding tracks there now.

Yes, I am feeling like a complete idiot for not thinking of this earlier.

*sigh*

At least I got a new cd/dvd drive out of the deal.

Y'all can commence with the "you should get an Apple instead" tripe. I suppose after all this I'll let you run with it. ;)

SO.

Using WMP until further notice. If MM gets their act together, I may redownload. But for now I guess I'll have to wait.

As for my Walk In Silence research...well, more on that later.

Now to start reinstalling stuff.

[PC] See, this is why you can't have nice things.

Not because I break them, but because the newer versions of software more often than not completely fuck up something on the system.

You'd think that Gateway would have reformatted everything, but no...I think what they did was take out the original cd/dvd drive, test it elsewhere, and put it back in and reuploaded a driver for it, and called it done. As soon as I turned on the PC, I noticed everything on the PC was still there, so it looked like they did the absolute bare minimum. Which meant that when I put in a cd to test it, it still didn't read.

Yeah. Paid money to send it out, I EXPECT that they fix it. Irate, I called Gateway asking them what the hell they did. He suggested to do another factory restore. So I do that, and Lo! CD works, if I put it in. It plays on Windows Media Player. It isn't my favorite media player, but it does the job.

As soon as I download the newest version of Media Monkey, which I prefer for many reasons?

Nothing. The drive refuses to read any cds. Even when I uninstall MM, it still refuses to read it.

So...at this point:

I'm thinking that Media Monkey must be screwing with the registry, because the cd/dvd drive is reading cds, but as soon as I upload MM it decides not to read them at all. It really irritates me, because this is the third media player I've used that I like, that has decided not to work anymore. This is mostly due to an upgrade that messes with the registry, or decides not to read cds anymore, or something stupid. I love MM because the library function is one of the best I've seen around...similar to much older versions of MusicMatch, the player worked great and the rip function worked quickly and without errors. Also like MusicMatch you could sort a collection in very intricate ways, unlike iTunes or WMP. MediaMonkey could also play all types of formats, not just mp3s--you could play iTunes' mp4s, and WMAs that don't always read elsewhere. And the biggest thing, you can format the release date of each track with mmddyyyy, not just by year--something that I haven't seen elsewhere, and something that was actually going to help me on my Walk In Silence project.

This pisses me off, because I did not have any problems in the past. And after all this pointless and irritating (and costly) stupidity, I hate the fact that I may have to give up an awesome media player due to a newer, non-functioning version. It would piss me off even more if this was ultimately the reason for my PC's recent issues.

SO.

I'm going to try WMP, since it comes with the PC setup. And if that doesn't let me rip cds or do anything, and if I also can't use some other programs either (this means both other media players like iTunes as well as non-media software like Google Earth), then I'm going to call back Gateway and DEMAND a complete replacement or refund. Hell, I still have my old craptacular PC in my closet...if it comes to that, I'll use that in the interim.

But if WMP does, work, I'm going to give the gang at MediaMonkey a good chewing out. I shouldn't have to buy a Lifetime key only to have it crap out a few years after the fact. Luckily I didn't pay too much for it, but it still chafes my butt that it happened with both MediaMonkey and MusicMatch.

In the meantime, guess I'll have to do some research to find another media player that has what I'm looking for.

*sigh*

[PC] Well! That was quick.

Just got an email from Gateway that my PC has just been shipped and is on its way back to Spare Oom. My thoughts on this so far:

--I believe they're sending FedEx, so there's a good chance that delivery is going to be a BIG pain in the ass, as it usually is. I may need to work at home on the day I'm expecting it, just so I can actually be there to get it. I really don't want to shlep to the nearest FedEx office (no idea if there is one here in SF) like I normally do with UPS.

--I'm guessing that they may have just taken out the motherboard/disc drive and put in a new one. Considering I'd contacted their customer service on at least five different occasions, they may have tried it once themselves, thought "What the hell did he do?!??" and just replaced the innards.

--I can finally listen to the CDs I bought nearly a month ago! YAY!

--I still need to download this month's worth of eMusic songs on the laptop, as it refreshes on Friday. Not a problem, though. Just need to decide what to download. ;)

--I'm just glad that the only money I paid for this little kerfuffle was the shipping costs to their warehouse. Everything else was free, since I'm still under warranty.

--I doubt there'll be any further problems (I'm hoping there won't be any)...but if it's still a lemon, my next step is getting a refund/replacement from Best Buy. Which would really piss me off, but if it happens, it happens.

--Now that I'm in a writing groove, I think I'll still work on the laptop out in the living room, and work in the man cave Spare Oom on the weekends.

More on this when it returns...

[PC] Oh, hell with it.

I give up. Norton 360, you were great. I had no problems with you. You were less intrusive, never acted up, and only scanned when I told you to.

Norton 360 v4? Not so much with the love. I'm pretty sure you're the culprit for my PC acting up as of late. Please note on my last PC posting, I mentioned that the drive worked fine when I ran the software disc for the wireless adapter. Once I uploaded you? BANG. Problems with the drive again.

You're fired, I'm getting a refund.

I'll stay with the old Norton 360 for the next few days. I think I have a few weeks' subscription left.

In the meantime...I admit defeat.

Table's open--give me suggestions for the best PC protection (non-Mac) (and if you say "buy a Mac" I will personally come over there and kick you) that does the following:

--isn't a power hog
--does a decent job of protecting
--doesn't do all sorts of stupid conflicting
--Likes Windows 7

Sure, I'm asking a lot, but I'm looking for ideas here. I'm open for anything at this point.

[Weekend] Etc.

PC:
So yeah, moving all my personal files (read: copies my writing, pictures and mp3s) *back* to the externals is taking some time, but hopefully everything will be back to normal by this evening. Contemplating which programs I *really* need on there and ones I can put on at a later date.

ZOO:
Went to the SF Zoo yesterday where I managed to video ten full minutes of GRIZZLY BEAR SMACKDOWN. The two grizzlies they have there were having a bit of fun wrasslin' in their pool and I got some really good footage out of it. I may post it here at some point soon. ALSO! The fishing cats are now up near the rest of the cats there, and one could tell they were still a bit nervous about being there. Emm got a really good picture of one hissing at her. And OMG, there were two monkeys (forgot what kind they were) that would NOT shut up. You could hear them all the way across the entire zoo. I think they even got the lemurs all worked up and howling at one point too.

WRITING:
So I'm reading what I have of Can't Find My Way Home, and OH MAN does it need work. The prose is craptastic and the dialogue is wooden. On the plus side, I have a complete outline to work with, so I can start over if/when need be.

Also, slowly but surely moving along with Love Like Blood. It's still in need of work, and there are a few subplots I may either drop or revise completely, but other than that it's moving in the right direction. Just wish I had more time in a day to work on it!

TODAY:
Did our walking today by taking the #1 bus up to Arguello and walking all the way back via Clement Street. Had brunch at Q Restaurant, stopped at Green Apple Books, and finally stopped at the Quickly up the street from our place for bubble teas.

Further on today: continuation of PC fixing, plus doing laundry (doing that currently), and maybe squeezing in some writing if I have time left over. Plus watching all sorts of fun stuff on TV.

[PC] Aha!

Okay, so after a quick online chat with Gateway support, they said that it might not be the cd drive or its driver, but the registry that got hosed, which makes sense to me, due to the following:

--I'd done a registry cleanup a few days previous to this problem
--The Device Manager is showing all is well, driver and drive-wise.
--After rebooting the PC successfully, everything's running okay *EXCEPT* the drive.
--Chances are I may have also hosed the registry during one of the hard reboots.

So! This means that a System restore (a good time back might be good, just to distance myself from the problem), and, failing that, following the directions on a link they sent me that might fix the registry.

And barring that, I guess I might have to bite the bullet and get more support on this. Luckily I'm still under warranty, so that's a good thing.

But for now? Even though all those tasty new cds are glaring at me, I'll be staying with a streamed station for the rest of the week. I've wasted too much time on this and list writing time, and I gotta get work done.

So...things are looking up, hopefully. :)

PC Woes. AGAIN.

So what do you think--motherboard, low RAM or power source? Or something else?

Last night when trying to open MS Word, the thing froze up (along with pretty much everything else), which has been an increasing problem lately with other programs, more often than not with IE. Tried to close all programs...managed to close IE without a problem, but MS WOrd refused to close. Tried to close down the PC, that didn't want to work either, after an amount of time. Decided to do a hard-dump, which, in retrospect, may not have been the best of ideas.

Tried rebooting. I get as far as the big "e" (I have an e-Machine so that's what you see) and the selection for Boot Menu (BOOT Menu: [F10], BIOS Settings: [F2]). Aaaaaaaand, that's where it stops. Neither function key responds. During all of this, the fan starts, but quiets down (and I think stops) about three seconds later. At the moment I've just got it on, just in case *something* happens, but I'm not expecting anything.

[EDIT: Okay, update on that--after about 10 or so minutes, it finally decided to reboot, started up Windows XP, and I think it did a VERY SLOW self-fixing and boot-up, and it looks okay now. Not sure if I fully trust it, but this is a good sign that I should do another backup, just in case!]

Any idea of what happened and how I can get it up and running again? In particular, I'm curious as to why certain programs get all wonky mid-process and use up all my virtual memory. The interesting thing is that my Norton suggests that I'm low on RAM and probably need to add it if I can. I'd have to pop open the PC to see if I have room for that, but I'm sure I do. Still...think this low RAM might be it? Diagnostics say I only have 512Mb, which I'm sure is lower than it really has any right to be.

Which brings me to the question, as I rarely if ever pop open a PC to look at it--I'm guessing that this addition of RAM would entail cracking open the PC itself to add a RAM chip/card/whatever? And I'm sure I'd have room for it, as everything I've added to this PC has pretty much been software or drivers.

Thanks ahead of time!

[PC Woes] *SIGH*

Okay, I quit again for now. I've spent most of the day trying to figure out what the problem is and still ain't getting anywhere. But the good thing is that everything ELSE on my PC works fine, so I have that.

I just can't print. I HAVE NO PRINT SPOOLER AND I MUST SCREAM. X(

So...maybe I should just call it a day, do some actual writing work, finish the laundry, and start doing some packing for our trip.
