Weekend updatery

Oh THANK GOODNESS my back is no longer hurting. It still gets sore if I lie in bed the wrong way (oddly enough, not on the side which hurts, but the opposite side, and it hurts because my arm rests because where the hell else is it gonna go...the excitement of being An Old...sigh). This does mean that I'll be able to return to my stretches without worrying that I'll twitch the wrong way and be writhing in pain on the floor.

And yeah, it's the end of the month which of course means Hey Let's Try to Start Next Month Off on A Positive Productive Note again. I say this pretty much in light humor, because I always have the best of intentions when the month starts. I don't always make it all the way to the end for one reason or another, but I've finally grown out of feeling guilty about that. At this point I'm just happy that I'm making the effort and that I'm moving in the right direction with the things I'm working on. The less I let myself sink into that particular mire the better, right?

So, *do* I have any plans for next month? I do! Some may end up being Best Laid Plans, but a lot of them are long-term plans and it's high time I set them in motion. The theme here is pretty much What Am I Waiting For?

So. Let's get things started, shall we?

Sunday Update

Pretty sure the lingering back pain I have is due to my continuing bad habits of terrible posture. Finding myself leaning up against my right elbow in this chair and hitching up my shoulder for extended periods of time. Looking at the monitor at a slight angle to the right, slightly pinching the neck muscle. And of course using the mouse by extending exact same arm straight across the desk. All things I can easily fix by a) ensuring that I sit up and don't slouch, b) turn my desk chair to face the monitor directly, and c) stop screwing around with things where I need to constantly click the mouse (or c vers2, wherein I move the mouse and mousepad to a different position where I'm not overextending). Just a matter of remembering.

Speaking of desk things, the downside to having one with a dark surface is that I notice that it attracts dust like no tomorrow. I should probably get out the Swiffer and clean it (and other things in this apartment while I'm at it). As is my usual choice, I try to keep my desk surface as clear as possible because otherwise there would be tons of completely forgotten things hiding under the detritus. (Not food, mind you...a few past college roommates with no sense of order ensured I never got that bad, since they'd do it for me on a consistent schedule.)

And speaking of Spare Oom, we've had the windows closed the last few days due to Far Northern California Being On Fire (nothing in the immediate area, thankfully) and the smoke has been drifting our way as of late. The air purifier we bought last year is working just fine and kept us in breathable air, which of course is a good thing. And today has been quite clear, so I've popped open the windows a crack just to get some outside air in.

Other than that, not much to report...still writing, still exercising and stretching, still keeping busy!

Weekend Stuff

A and I just came back yesterday from an overnight stay in the Pacific Grove/Monterey area. It's sort of our Having A Safe Travel Vacation During A Pandemic thing, like our visit to Mendocino last month. It was quite enjoyable and relaxing, though the Aquarium was MUCH more crowded than we'd have liked. Many pictures taken, lots of walking done, many sea otters seen (two at the aquarium, a few out in the bay), a roadside farm stand stopped at, and a LOT of driving done. I've posted many pictures over at my IG.

Now for our usual mundane Sunday stuff: laundry, a few errands and whatnot.

Alas, at some point last week I think I may have overexerted a back muscle or two, as it twitches like a mofo when I'm getting out of bed. Weirdly enough it goes away after about fifteen minutes if I stay upright and it's very centralized, so I'm pretty sure it's not a spinal issue or a nerve issue. A bit of stretching and taking some ibuprofen at the end of the day seems to have calmed it down some. I'll just need to be careful about it for a few more days. Ah, the pleasure of getting older...

Not much else going on...just catching up with emails, cleaning house and getting sushi for lunch. Just your usual mundane Sunday!

Ow ow ow ow

My sciatica seems to have poked me in the back a few times recently with a really annoying and painful HI REMEMBER ME? and I'm not happy about it. Today's wave hit me as I leaned over the bathroom sink while brushing my teeth, mind you, so once again it has decided to make its presence known in the most annoying of ways. This of course means that I'm going to need to get back into my daily stretches again. I've missed a few days over the last couple of weeks due to one thing or another, and having started them some time ago, I know they've been keeping that dang sciatica at bay.

On another 'ow'-related subject, I shall be getting my second Moderna dose this coming Thursday morning. I've heard that it's the second shot that knocks you for six, so since I'm heading out of town for it, I'm hoping that if it does, it won't kick in until after I'm back at home. I wasn't gone long last time, so I should be fine. No knowing whether or not I'll be wobbly by the end of the day until it happens, though!  A got her first shot this past Friday and it didn't bother her much at all other than the sore arm.

Meanwhile, I'm on the last quarter of this recent Diwa & Kaffi revision, yay! The end is in sight, and I think if I stick to it over the next several days, I should have it done and prepared and ready to go in the next week or so! Which means that once I submit it, I can FINALLY get back to the New Projects that have been warming on the backburner for the last few months. I'm really looking forward to getting back to writing those!

Other than that, we had a lovely Sunday at the Botanical Garden with several pix shot and Instagrammed between both of us. Going to finish the laundry and get a few creative things done now.

Hope everyone has a lovely week!

Weekend Update Is an Old Man with Aches and Pains

Ah, sciatica. Thy name is PAIN IN THE ASS. (Almost literally.) I never know what's going to set it off. I could pick up heavy stuff, brazenly reach for things beyond my grasp, slouch like a slug at my desk for hours at a time, and nothing will hurt it. And then I attempt to crawl out of the back seat of my in-laws' rental car (it's not that there was no leg room--more like the door was relatively small and getting out was akin to climbing out of an Apollo Command Module), and I start feeling that telltale tweak in my lower back. And then the heavy stuff I pick up without thinking, the coffee I left dead center on the kitchen table, the tiring eight-hour slog of a busy workweek, not to mention my comedic and violent attempts at turning over in bed, that starts aggravating it.

Surprisingly, it stopped hurting during the two-hour performance at the Symphony last night. It could be the plush seats and the angle they were at, plus the fact that I wasn't slouching or settling in some weird position. Of course being the guy that I am, I had to prove something (I'm not sure what) by putting the heavy box of my new chair in the trunk of the car, putting the chair together myself, bringing the empty box down and breaking it up for the recycling bin, and doing three loads of laundry today. Somebody tell me that was a good idea? Y/N?

Aside from that...the rest of the week has been kind of quiet. We had a bit of a OMGWTFBBQ NEEDTHISDONENOW issue with a client, which we were able to do in record time--which meant me dropping everything else I was doing and screwing up the turnaround time on those other issues in the process. I made sure I made a bit of noise while doing it--basically saying "sure, we'll do it, but next time out, give us more than just 48 hours to do this huge thing, because you just screwed up the SLAs for everything else." Suffice it to say, my bosses were on my side on that, so that's good.

Writingwise...plugging along with the revision. Currently on Chapter 22 and hoping to get this thing finished soon enough. I know I'll need to go over The Process of Belief at least a few more times before an agent gets to see it, but at this point I think it's in a MUCH better place than it was just a few years ago when I finally finished it. The most it needs is some cleaning of prose and perhaps a few more minor scene rewrites. As said before, as soon as I'm done with this revision go-round, I'll be starting in hot and heavy with Walk in Silence, so expect to see a major uptick in music blog entries and retrospectives!

Long weekend revue

First off, my FList has grown exponentially due to an influx of people from Forward Motion suddenly arriving with LJs in tow. Hello fellow FMers, glad you could make it! :)

Anyway! Another fun-packed weekend here at Casa T-C, as evidenced by [livejournal.com profile] emmalyon's two picture posts from yesterday. Airshows, horse and carriage rides, parades, who could ask for more?

Oh, perhaps my sciatic nerve not acting up on me??? :( I know, I know...I sit on my butt all day at work, how could I possibly get sciatica there? Well, perhaps it's partly because I've been trying to break a bad habit of leaning forward in my chair for hours on end (our work computers have the Big Monster Monitors from the Year 1981 that don't have the best quality), and partly because I've been doing a lot of between-call reading and writing. I've got to figure out a better way to sit at work that doesn't bother my back. Or maybe I'll snag one of those chairs from the middle section that aren't being used and look a LOT more comfortable...

Other than that, I drove [livejournal.com profile] emmalyon to the airport last night, as she's out in NJ this weekend for work-related stuff until Wednesday. Which of course means me staying up too late, not eating right, and other bad things for a few days. What? I'm a guy, what else did you expect? :p

Today is a day off for me, and I really don't have anything planned, so I'm figuring I'll just hang about the house, do some tidying up, perhaps get out for a walk to Safeway and the book store or something, and see where I go from there. And I'm being a dork and slowly going through all my LJ posts (yep, all of them) and updating the tags. Why? I don't know.

Oh, and some writing would probably be good too. ;)

Oh, and let it be known that it's still blowing my mind that in a little over a week, I'll be on a plane to Hawaii for the first time. w00000t! :)
