Sony BMG caught in payola!

Okay, this is a rather interesting thing I heard on NPR yesterday on the way home, and I couldn't be happier. The fact that one of the biggest music distributors (second only to Vivendi Universal, I believe) has been screwing with radio stations is disgusting. In a way I'm glad that satellite radio and internet radio is going so well, but I'm also kinda saddened that this kind of bullcrap screws over stations. The station misses out on promotions because they don't play Celine Dion enough? Yeah, that's screwy. It ain't right.

(NOTE: I had to find this article at the NY Times site, as I couldn't find it anywhere on CNN.com, which is owned, not surprisingly, by another company that owns a music distributor: Warner. Strange, no? ;) )

You mean we might get some variety now on the radio?!

[identity profile] chaoticmoth.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn. If I had the money I would sign up for Sirius Satellite radio, but right now I would rather have a vehicle to put it in. :)

If only there were a way to make Launchcast portable...

[identity profile] chaoticmoth.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. If I don't have money for Sirius, I don't have money for an MP3 player and the monthly subscription. :)

How about a web-available cell phone???

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be getting that in my next car. Whenever that is. I want to get a hybrid this fall, but we'll see how the $ is then. Plus, I need to test drive the Insight, Civic and Prius before I decide.

[identity profile] chaoticmoth.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
We have been pretty happy with the Civic, though the hybrids are supposed to be decent.

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The Civic I want to get is a hybrid.

You should have driven with us when we were there! It's been great so far. The Prius is what we originally wanted, with all the extra bells and whistles, but the Civic was available before March 2010 and was several thousand dollars cheaper. Plus, it may handle the hills by our house better than the Prius would have, esp. in winter.

So I guess you all are more interested in what your next car will be rather than what the radio stations play, eh? Sheesh...yuppies, all of ya!!! :p

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really care what the radio stations play 'cause I don't listen to them. Payola's been around since radio started and it'll be around long after today.

[identity profile] joncwriter.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you're no fun. :p

I'm tempted by the Prius or Insight because they reportedly get mileage in the 60s. I'm tempted by the Civic because it is supposed to get over 50mpg while being roomier. Though someone did tell me that mileage falls through the floor when the AC is on, but I'd have to check how regular car's mpg falls off with the ac on as well...

[identity profile] emmalyon.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I get about the same MPG with or without AC, maybe a hair less (32 MPG rather than 34-35).

You can press a button that will turn the A/C off when the engine is stopped, and it conserves energy and saves mileage. We did the whole NJ trip w/A/C and still averaged 39 mpg. The Prius get better mileage, but is more expensive and not as much horsepower.
