[RTS] The Noughties: An Overview (pt. 10: 2009)
So here we are in the final hours of 2009...lots of good, lots of bad, lots of WTF. Been an interesting year...most of it I've already mentioned in a post from earlier today. And musically, like the last couple of years, I haven't tried to follow the alt-rock scene and just went with what I liked. I'd started listening to Channel 92.3, a San Jose station that used to just come in when we went on road trips southwards, but now has a wider signal, and they filled me with all sorts of alt.rock goodies. :)
Videos below the cut!
Franz Ferdinand, "No You Girls" from Franz Ferdinand: Tonight, rel. 1/26/2009.
This band always manages to have some sort of Smoove vibe going with their songs...
U2, "Magnificent" from No Line on the Horizon, rel. 2/27/2009.
Say what you will about the band, this was a GREAT comeback album, reaffirming how much I really do enjoy them.
The Airborne Toxic Event, "Sometime Around Midnight" from The Airborne Toxic Event, rel. 3/16/2009.
EXCELLENT song from a great new band with nary a bad song on the cd. Highly suggested.
Era Nocturna, "Empty" from Lackluster, rel. 3/26/2009.
My great friend
dollydelusion released some of her best work this year, and here's a sample. So go bug her and order a copy already!
thenewno2, "Choose What You're Watching" from You Are Here, rel. 3/31/2009.
He really does look like his dad, doesn't he? Nonetheless...very strong debut from George Harrison's son Dhani and his band.
Metric, "Help I'm Alive", originally from Fantasies, rel. 4/7/2009.
This one from Dave Letterman performance. I've heard this song so many times this year, but never got sick of it...excellent album too!
Silversun Pickups, "Panic Switch" from Swoon, rel. 4/14/2009.
That bass line KICKED MY ASS this year. Easily one of the top songs for me.
Great Northern, "Houses", originally from Remind Me Where the Light Is, rel. 4/28/2009.
I'd somehow missed this until I started hearing it on the radio while doing all that moving to the new apartment. Very interesting sparse sound with this band, and the singer totally reminds me of Toni Halliday from Curve.
Green Day, "East Jesus Nowhere" from 21st Century Breakdown, rel. 5/15/2009.
Somehow this band managed to outdo American Idiot with an even greater album!
MuteMath, "Backfire" from Armistice, rel. 8/18/2009.
A nerdy band full of awesome, and another band that followed us to and from Montreal. :)
The Beatles, "Hey Jude" from The Beatles in Stereo, rel. 9/9/2009.
Oh, come on, like you didn't see this one coming from me! Easily the most anticipated release for me, and well worth the wait. Number one in my book, of course. ;)
Porcupine Tree, "Time Flies" from The Incident, rel. 9/14/2009.
Didn't expect the new album, but it's definitely one of their best. Yay 52-minute prog-rock song cycles! :p
Editors, "Papillon" from In This Light and On This Evening, rel. 10/12/2009.
This band definitely sounds less like Joy Division now, but they do retain a retro quality that makes this an EXCELLENT album, and well worth picking up.
Weezer, "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" from Raditude, rel. 11/3/2009.
My favorite song from them at this point...and a decidedly poppier album from them (as in less RAWK and more rock), it's quite good.
And sneaking in at the last possible moment...
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Graffiti Worth Reading", originally from Pin Points and Gin Joints, rel. 12/8/2009
The boys from Boston are back after a near-decade hiatus with a great ska album!
Other Videos:
Doves, "Kingdom of Rust" from Kingdom of Rust, rel. 4/6/2009. Glad to see them return after a four-year absence...and the album was well worth the wait.
Depeche Mode, "Wrong" from Sounds of the Universe, rel. 4/20/2009. Great comeback album, probably one of my favorites of the year.
Owl City, "Fireflies" from Ocean Eyes, rel. 7/28/2009.
emmalyon's song of the year, and one that followed us around on our trip to Montreal.
Pearl Jam, "Just Breathe" from Backspacer, rel. 9/20/2009. A welcome return to their poppier side, this album...and a very unexpected but welcome love song from the band.
And that's it! Thanks for playing along, everyone! Happy New Year, and hope you all have a RAWKING 2010! :D
